Cowboys Get Down To 53
The Cowboys have made their cuts to get down to 53 players. Nothing too surprising on this list, although there is at least one interesting takeaway. The Cowboys cut three running backs, leaving Alfred Morris and Tony Pollard as the only two currently with the team. That’s a strong indicator that the team is expecting Ezekiel Elliott back before Week 1.
Receiver Devin Smith also made the roster as their final receiver, which is a nice feel-good story. Drafted by the Jets 37th overall back in 2015, multiple ACL tears derailed his promising career. Smith has had brutal injury luck and hasn’t appeared in a game since 2016, so this is nice to see.

Cowboys Sign S Tyvis Powell
Tyvis Powell has found another gig. Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.com writes that the safety will be signing with the Cowboys. The team opened up a roster spot earlier today after waiving tight end Rico Gathers.
It’s been a busy few weeks for Powell, a 2016 undrafted free agent out of Ohio State. The 25-year-old signed with the Texans in late July, but he was cut by the organization this past weekend. The 25-year-old has appeared in 18 career games, including seven this past season with the 49ers. He finished 2018 with six tackles and one forced fumble.
The defensive back has bounced between five different teams (including separate stints with the 49ers) over his three years in the league. Fortunately, he has some familiarity with some in the Cowboys organization; he was a teammate of Ezekiel Elliott back in college, and he played under defensive passing game coordinator Kris Richard in Seattle.
Powell wasn’t the only player to audition for the Cowboys today. According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas News (via Twitter), the team also worked out offensive tackle Brian Wallace and cornerback Channing Stribling.
Texans Sign S A.J. Hendy
The Texans are swapping one safety for another. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets that the team is re-signing A.J. Hendy. To make room, Houston is cutting Tyvis Powell.
Hendy, a 2016 undrafted free agent out of Maryland, was signed by the Texans off the Chargers practice squad last January. He was waived by Houston last week, but the team apparently regretted their decision and brought him back. The 26-year-old has one NFL game on his resume, although he’s had consistent practice squad gigs since he entered the league.

The Texans have added a pair of defenders. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports (via Twitter) that the team has signed safety Tyvis Powell. Meanwhile, Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston tweets that the Texans also added linebacker B.J. Bello.

Bello went undrafted out of Illinois State in 2017. After spending his entire rookie campaign with the Browns, he spent 2018 with the Cardinals and Eagles. The 24-year-old has appeared in 19 career games (including 16 games during his rookie year), compiling eight total tackles.
The Texans are currently dealing with a handful of injuries on their defense. J.J. Watt is sitting on the active/physically unable to perform list, while Jamal Davis and Walter Palmore are on the active/non-football illness list and active/non-football injury list, respectively.
