49ers Cut Tom Savage

Tom Savage‘s San Francisco stay may end up being brief. The 49ers announced Saturday they’ve waived the former Texans quarterback.

The team brought in Savage on Tuesday and does not have a veteran presence on its roster, with second-year man C.J. Beathard starting and rookie Nick Mullens backing him up. But the 49ers will move on without Savage for now and promote defensive back Tyvis Powell.

This is the second time Savage has been cut this year. The Saints parted ways with him prior to the season, acquiring Teddy Bridgewater to back up Drew Brees and keeping versatile QB Taysom Hill as well.

This separation may not last long, though. Savage looks to have a chance to return to the team soon, with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco tweeting the 49ers will probably bring him back in the coming days. A need for DB depth resulted in this transaction, but should that situation clear up in the near future, Savage may return. Still, his stock’s taken a noticeable dive since being named Houston’s Week 1 starter last season.

Powell has bounced on and off the 49ers’ active roster this year. He’s up with the 53-man unit now because of injuries. Jimmie Ward is doubtful to play Sunday against the Rams, and Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon are questionable.

49ers Release LB Terence Garvin

Terence Garvin‘s 49ers stay may end up being brief. Signed during Reuben Foster‘s suspension, Garvin received notice Saturday he’s being cut.

The 49ers announced they’ve released Garvin and promoted defensive back Tyvis Powell from the practice squad. Foster is set to make his season debut Sunday against the Chiefs.

This marks the second time Garvin’s been released in a month. He signed with the Dolphins as a free agent this offseason but did not make Miami’s 53-man roster. The 49ers added him as insurance shortly after Week 1 and deployed him as a backup against the Lions last week.

Since Garvin is a sixth-year veteran, he does not have to pass through waivers at this point on the NFL calendar. Garvin’s played for the Steelers, Redskins, Seahawks and 49ers, spending three years in Pittsburgh and starting three games in Seattle last season.

Powell played in three games for the 49ers last season. He spent time with the Seahawks in 2016. San Francisco starting safety Jaquiski Tartt is questionable for Sunday’s game, perhaps prompting the team to add depth in its secondary. Both Richard Sherman and Akhello Witherspoon were limited this week in practice, although both upgraded to full work by Friday.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC West

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC West teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

49ers Cut 21 Players, Reach 53-Man Max

The 49ers have reached the 53-man roster maximum after releasing 21 players on Saturday afternoon. Here’s the full rundown:

The following players have been released:

In addition to those cuts, the Niners also have a few extra spots on their initial 53-man roster thanks to suspensions for wide receiver Victor Bolden and linebacker Reuben Foster. They’ll also be without defensive lineman Kentavius Street as he sits on the NFI list.
