Overall, not a ton of shockers here either. Spencer Pulley was the team’s starting center last year, but now finds himself cut. Rookie sixth-rounder Dylan Cantrell also failed to make the team. The Chargers elected to keep three quarterbacks, keeping Cardale Jones‘ roster spot safe for now.
Chargers Claim TE Je’Ron Hamm
The Chargers added a tight end to their roster today, but it probably wasn’t the player fans were hoping for. The team announced that they’ve claimed tight end Je’Ron Hamm off waivers from the Seahawks. To make room on the roster, the Chargers waived wideout Marcus Peterson.
The 26-year-old Hamm has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted out of Louisiana-Monroe back in 2014. He had a pair of receptions for 13 yards in 2015 with the 49ers, and he’s also had stints with the Saints, Redskins, and Seahawks. He signed with Seattle back in July, and after being waived and re-signed, he was waived a second time yesterday.
Of course, following the season-ending injury to Hunter Henry, there’s been plenty of speculation that the Chargers would re-sign veteran Antonio Gates. Head coach Anthony Lynn recently said that negotiations were ongoing, and the need for a veteran was clear after Chargers tight ends accounted for five drops during the team’s preseason opener. However, for the time being, the team is rolling with Hamm, Virgil Green, Sean Culkin, and Braedon Bowman.
Peterson signed with the Chargers earlier this month. He became the first Seton Hill University alumni to sign with an NFL team.

Seahawks Add Three Tight Ends, Waive CB DeAndre Elliott
With Ed Dickson currently dealing with an injury, the Seahawks added several tight ends today. ESPN’s Field Yates reports (via Twitter) that Seattle has claimed tight end Kyle Carter off waivers from the Giants. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Brady Henderson adds that the team has also signed tight ends Kayaune Ross and Je’Ron Hamm (Twitter link).
The team had already opened one roster spot today by releasing former second-round defensive lineman Malik McDowell, and John Boyle of Seahawks.com notes that the team also let go of cornerback DeAndre Elliott with a failed physical designation.
Carter, a 2016 undrafted free agent out of Penn State, was waived by New York yesterday. The 25-year-old spent the first two seasons of his career with the Vikings, appearing in three games with the team last season. Hamm, 26, has spent time with the Saints, Redskins, and 49ers since going undrafted out of Louisiana-Monroe in 2014. He has a pair of career catches for 13 yards. Ross, an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky, finished his collegiate career with 19 catches for 286 yards.
Dickson has been dealing with a groin injury, leading to his placement on the PUP list earlier today. The trio of new tight ends will be hard pressed to make the roster unless Dickson is forced to miss the start of the regular season, as the Seahawks are also rostering Nick Vannett, Will Dissly, and Tyrone Swoopes.
Elliott joined the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2016. In two seasons with the team, he’s compiled eight tackles.
49ers Cut 13 Players
The 49ers have released 13 players, including linebacker Jayson DiManche and wide receiver Eric Rogers. Here’s the full list:
- OL Alex Balducci
- S Marcus Ball
- LB Carl Bradford
- LB Jayson DiManche
- TE Je’Ron Hamm
- WR Chris Harper
- LB Wynton McManis
- P Brock Miller
- DL Zach Moore
- NT Mike Purcell
- WR Eric Rogers
- CB JaCorey Shepherd
- LB Shayne Skov
DiManche was just signed on April 7th, so his stint in San Francisco lasted less than one month. We haven’t seen DiManche in live action since 2015 when he appeared in one game for the Browns. Prior to that, he spent two seasons with the Bengals.
Rogers, a former CFL standout, was a practice field favorite of Chip Kelly last offseason until an unfortunate injury shut him down for the season. This week, the 49ers signed undrafted Baylor wide receiver K.D. Cannon and that only further crowded the wide receiver position in SF. With Rogers and Harper out of the picture, the team still has nine receivers under contract.
Minor NFL Transactions: 10/1/16
Here are today’s minor moves.
- The 49ers cut running back DuJuan Harris and signed tight end Je’Ron Hamm, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports. This represents the third time the Niners have cut Harris, a former Packer for three years, this season. Hamm could be needed for emergency duty, with Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek listed as questionable for San Francisco’s Week 4 tilt against Dallas. Hamm saw action in one game with Washington last season and spent a game on the 49ers’ active roster in 2015 as well.
- Offensive tackle Jeremy Vujnovich will join the Colts‘ 53-man roster after the team signed him off its practice squad, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 and CBS 4 reports (on Twitter). The 25-year-old tackle has yet to see action in an NFL game. Chappell notes this could be an indication right tackle Joe Reitz isn’t progressing sufficiently from a back injury.
49ers Acquire Rod Streater, Trim Roster To 53
12:25pm: Maiocco tweets that McCray is likely to be placed on waivers following the failed trade.
MONDAY, 9:40am: McCray reportedly failed his physical, and NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo indicates (via Twitter) that the deal is off. The safety was originally traded to the Seahawks for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2018.
The safety is set to go back to the 49ers for the time being. Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle notes (via Twitter) that McCray is recovering from a torn ACL and is likely to be released.
SUNDAY, 5:30pm: The wideout announced that he’s officially been dealt to the 49ers, while CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco tweets that Streater presumably passed his physical.
SATURDAY, 4:14pm: The 49ers announced they they’ve acquired wide receiver Rod Streater from the Chiefs. Streater had spent his career in Oakland before signing with Kansas City, and now he’ll head back to the Bay Area with a chance to make an impact in a depleted WR corps.
San Francisco also announced that they’ve traded safety L.J. McCray to the Seahawks. The compensation involved in both deals has not been announced.
Cut:
- DL Garrison Smith (Twitter link via Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area)
- DL B.J. McBryde (Twitter link via Maiocco)
- DT Demetrius Cherry (Twitter link via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee)
- LB Corey Lemonier (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com)
- WR Devon Cajuste (Twitter link via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle)
- RB Kelvin Taylor (Twitter link via Schefter)
- TE Je’Ron Hamm (Twitter link via Branch)
- LB Shayne Skov (Twitter link via Branch)
- OT Colin Kelly (Twitter link via Maiocco)
- WR Dres Anderson
- OL Alex Balducci
- OL Fahn Cooper
- QB Jeff Driskel
- RB DuJuan Harris
- CB Prince Charles Iworah
- OL Norman Price
- LB Marcus Rush
- WR Bryce Treggs
- WR Ryan Whalen
- WR DeAndrew White
Lemonier was the 49ers’ third-round pick in 2013, but he never made much of an impact in San Francisco. In 42 games (two starts), Lemonier picked up 37 tackles and a sack.
