Colts Claim K Chase McLaughlin
The Colts currently have two kickers on their roster. They claimed rookie Chase McLaughlin off waivers from the 49ers, calling Adam Vinatieri‘s status into question.
To make room on their 53-man roster, the Colts waived tight end Matt Lengel. McLaughlin served as a replacement kicker for both the Chargers and 49ers this season. The latter waived him Tuesday.
Vinatieri has trudged through a brutal season and is now on the Colts’ injury report with a knee issue. He made it through a limited practice Wednesday. Considering Vinatieri’s injury- and performance-related concerns, McLaughlin looks set to kick for a third team this season.
In his 14th year with the Colts, Vinatieri has missed eight field goals and six extra points. The future Hall of Famer’s ineffectiveness has undoubtedly affected Indianapolis’ position in the standings. The 46-year-old specialist missed two kicks in Week 13, with one being blocked and returned for a touchdown.
The 24th-year veteran resisted an early-season retirement but has not found the rhythm from prior seasons. His 68% connect rate is the worst of his career, so it will be interesting to see if the Colts carry two kickers into their Week 14 game.
McLaughlin has made 13 of 17 field goals, with all four misses coming from between 40-49 yards, and was successful on all 15 of his extra point tries. The 23-year-old Illinois alum made the only 50-yard kick he’s attempted as a pro.
Colts Sign TE Matt Lengel
The Colts aren’t finished revamping their tight end corps. After placing Eric Ebron on injured reserve and adding Ross Travis, the Colts have also signed tight end Matt Lengel, reports Mike Chappell CBS4 Sports in Indy (via Twitter).
The 2015 undrafted free agent out of Eastern Kentucky has bounced around the NFL a bit, spending time with five organizations (not including two stints with the Bengals). Lengel caught two passes for 22 yards and one touchdown during the Patriots’ Super-Bowl-winning 2016 campaign, and he had another three receptions for 17 yards and one score in 11 games (two starts) with the Bengals last season.
Indy placed Ebron on the injured reserve early today after learning that the tight end would need surgery on both of his ankles. The Colts initially brought in Travis, who played four games for the organization in 2017, to replace the veteran. An ACL wiped out Travis’s entire 2018 season, meaning the 26-year-old hasn’t seen the field in more than a year.
The Colts’ new additions will join a depth chart that also features Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox. Indy is also hopeful that they’ll have T.Y. Hilton and Devin Funchess in the lineup against the Titans this weekend.

Bengals Sign Matt Lengel
The Bengals signed tight end Matt Lengel off of the Texans’ practice squad, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Lengel will give the Bengals another tight end to work with following Tyler Eifert‘s season-ending injury.
Lengel, 28 in December, first entered the league as a UDFA with the Bengals in 2015. In 2016, he hooked on with the Patriots where he caught his only NFL touchdown to date. Last year, he was waived/injured by the Pats and found his way to the Browns practice squad. He earned a promotion midway through the year and saw time in a December loss to the Bears. Lengel was picked up by the Texans after the Browns waived him in April, and he joined their practice squad after missing the final cut. Now, he’s back where it all started.
Lengel has appeared in seven career NFL games and hopes to add to the total in Cincinnati. For now, he’ll be playing behind Tyler Kroft, C.J. Uzomah, and Mason Schreck.

The Texans also released Joe Webb, thinning out their quarterback room to just Deshaun Watson and Brandon Weeden.
Houston will begin its season without the services of backup running back D’Onta Foreman as well. Still recovering from his season-ending injury sustained in November of last year, Foreman will begin the season on the Texans’ Reserve/PUP list. He won’t be eligible to play until after Week 6.

Texans Claim TE Matt Lengel
The Texans have been awarded tight end Matt Lengel off of waivers from the Browns. In order to make room, the team cut quarterback Taylor Heinicke.
Lengel was one of seven players dropped by Cleveland on Thursday, along with tight end Gavin Escobar, linebacker Max Bullough, defensive back C.J. Smith, wide receivers Bug Howard and Larry Pinkard, and running back Kelvin Taylor. Smith also found a new home on Friday after being claimed by the Broncos.
Lengel, 27, first entered the league as a UDFA with the Bengals in 2015. In 2016, he hooked on with the Patriots where he caught his only NFL touchdown to date. Last year, he was waived/injured by the Pats and found his way to the Browns practice squad. He earned a promotion midway through the year and saw time in a December loss to the Bears.
There’s an opportunity for Lengel to make the Texans’ final cut. He joins a TE group that presently includes Stephen Anderson, Ryan Malleck, MyCole Pruitt, Ryan Malleck, and Jevoni Robinson.
