Falcons Dismiss Assistant DL Coach LaTroy Lewis
The Falcons named LaTroy Lewis their new assistant defensive line coach just 17 days ago. In the days since then, serious sexual assault allegations have surfaced against him from an unnamed alleged victim, per Darko State Media reporter and host of The Spiro Avenue Show podcast Justin Spiro.
An initial statement released by the Falcons (via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk) read, “We are aware of allegations regarding LaTroy Lewis. We are in the process of gathering information and will have no further comment at this time.”
It shouldn’t have been too difficult for Atlanta’s decisionmakers to glean information on the situation. Per Spiro, Lewis was in his hotel room in Indianapolis, “where he is attending the NFL Combine with other Falcons staff,” when Spiro called him for comment on the accusations against him. About two hours after the team’s statement, Greg Auman of FOX Sports relayed that the Falcons had dismissed Lewis after a little over two weeks of employment.
The allegations against Lewis stem from a time during which he was a part of what has become a very controversial coaching staff at the University of Michigan. Working as a graduate assistant under a newly promoted head coach in Sherrone Moore, Lewis reportedly met his accuser through a social media dating platform. Spiro provided screenshots of alleged communications from Lewis to his accuser that very quickly include threats of physical and sexual violence. “Under coercive circumstances,” Lewis demanded a collection of money and items totaling around $25K. The two had still not met in person up to that point.
Shortly after, Lewis’s accuser traveled to Ann Arbor for a work-related event, and the then-Michigan staffer allegedly made his way to her location under false pretenses before physically and sexually abusing her; Spiro’s breaking report included photographs to support many of the woman’s claims against Lewis. Following the Ann Arbor interaction, the alleged victim, who was acquainted with Lewis’s head coach outside of her interactions with Lewis, reached out to Moore to make him aware of the actions of his staffer as she was too scared to go to police. A mandatory reporter under Title IX, as dictated by the University of Michigan’s policy, the head coach allegedly shirked his responsibilities when she confided in him, refusing to report Lewis to the proper authorities. In fact, Moore himself allegedly began to harass Lewis’s accuser, while recommending Lewis for a position as the defensive line coach at Toledo.
Moore has since been fired from Michigan and arrested for stalking and breaking and entering. After a year at Toledo, Lewis accepted a job a UConn before leaving to accept his most recent position with the Falcons. In the wake of his dismissal, Lewis will likely be sought to participate in the newly opened investigation by the Ann Arbor Police Department. For now, though, his short stay in the NFL ranks of coaching has come to an end.
Falcons Make Three Coaching Hires, Retain Two More
Yesterday, the Falcons announced decisions on four positions on their coaching staff. They announced that inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud and defensive assistant John Timu would be retained and that LaTroy Lewis and Ricky Manning Jr. had been hired as assistant defensive line coach and assistant defensive backs/nickels coach, respectively. In addition to being retained, Timu has also been promoted to outside linebackers coach.
After coaching eight years at the collegiate level, Ruud joined the Falcons in 2024. His past two seasons in Atlanta have seen strong production from linebackers Kaden Elliss and Divine Deablo. Timu joined the team at the same time as Ruud and worked closely alongside defensive line coach Nate Ollie, who was also retained, as the Falcons defense notched a franchise-high 57-sack season. A former linebacker with the Bears, Timu previously worked three seasons with the Chargers, helping them to one of their best pass rushing seasons in recent memory, as well.
Lewis will now be working closely alongside Ollie, as well. The new assistant DL coach comes from his most recent role as defensive line coach at Toledo. Another former NFL linebacker, Lewis made other collegiate coaching stops at Akron, South Alabama, Wake Forest, and Michigan. Manning, a former cornerback with the Panthers and Bears with 14 career interceptions, began coaching in 2016 as assistant defensive backs coach with the Seahawks. After a three-year stint as a defensive assistant with the Jets, Manning was named cornerbacks coach for a season in Las Vegas. He didn’t coach anywhere this past season.
In addition to the team’s announcements, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported today that Chase Blackburn will also be joining the staff as assistant special teams coach. A former linebacker with the Giants and Panthers, Blackburn stayed on in Carolina after his playing career ended and became a special teams staffer. He had a four-year stint as special teams coordinator for the Panthers and just concluded a three-year stint in the same role with the Rams after the team fired him. He will be working under new special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman.
Lastly, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Jacquies Smith, who formerly filled the outside linebackers position now held by Timu, will become the new outside linebackers coach at Texas Tech after not being retained in Atlanta. He replaces C.J. Ah You, who recently accepted the same position with the Steelers.

Houston will begin its season without the services of backup running back D’Onta Foreman as well. Still recovering from his season-ending injury sustained in November of last year, Foreman will begin the season on the Texans’ Reserve/PUP list. He won’t be eligible to play until after Week 6.

Texans Place OT Chris Clark On IR
The Texans have placed left tackle Chris Clark and linebacker Ben Heeney on injured reserve, the club announced today. In related moves, Houston promoted LB Gimel President, LB LaTroy Lewis, and G Chad Slade from its practice squad to the active roster.
Clark, 32, had been serving as the Texans’ starting left tackle, a role he played while longtime starter Duane Brown was holding out and after Brown was traded to the Seahawks. Manning the blindside of a line that ranks in the bottom half of the league in both adjusted line yards and adjusted sack rate, Clark graded as a bottom-10 tackle, per Pro Football Focus.
Houston has several options to take over at left tackle: Kendall Lamm replaced Clark — who has a high ankle sprain and a bone bruise, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link) — but fourth-round rookie Julie’n Davenport could also be in the mix when he returns from his own injury (a shoulder issue that caused him to miss Week 12). Long-term, Clark probably isn’t in the Texans’ plans, as his contract expires after the 2017 campaign.
Heeney, meanwhile, is a former fifth-round pick whom Houston acquired off waivers earlier this year. Although Heeney barely played on the defensive side of the ball, he did manage 107 special teams snaps in only five games.
