Raiders To Sign Cooper Helfet
The Raiders have agreed to sign free agent tight end Cooper Helfet, according to his agent Doug Hendrickson (Twitter link). Helfet has been on the open market since being waived by the Seahawks in August.

A former UDFA out of Duke, Helfet had played with the Seahawks since 2012, but didn’t make an impact until 2014. The 27-year-old appeared in 23 games over the past two seasons (starting four), posting 25 receptions for 315 yards and two touchdowns — both of which came in 2015.
The Raiders recently placed veteran tight end Lee Smith on season-ending injured reserve, and fellow TE Clive Walford didn’t play in Week 5 while battling a knee injury. Farther down the club’s depth chart, Oakland boasts Mychal Rivera and recent signee Ryan O’Malley.

Minor NFL Transactions: 8/11/16
Thursday’s minor moves from around the NFL:
- The Seahawks have waived two players from injured reserve, linebacker Christian French and tight end Cooper Helfet, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times (Twitter link). The team reached an injury settlement with Helfet.
- The Bills announced the release of linebacker Kevin Reddick from the reserve/injured list with an injury settlement.
- The Colts signed running back Chase Price and linebacker Anthony Sarao, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets.
- The Seahawks are signing defensive tackle Tylor Harris, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. Harris is a UDFA out of Wake Forest. To make room for Harris, they’ve waived linebacker Montese Overton to make room for Harris, per Condotta (Twitter link).
- The Texans reached an injury settlement with Richard Leonard (hamstring surgery), removing him from IR, Wilson tweets.
Seahawks Waive Cooper Helfet
On a busy day in Seattle, the Seahawks waived fifth-year tight end Cooper Helfet, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reports, amid a wave of transactions.
The Seahawks extended Helfet a tender as an exclusive-rights free agents in March, and the 27-year-old pass-catcher signed it soon after. However, Helfet has missed almost all of training camp after breaking a bone in his foot.
Condotta expects the veteran tight end to pass through waivers and land on Seattle’s IR (Twitter link).
A former UDFA out of Duke, Helfet’s played with the Seahawks since 2012 and made a modest impact during the past two seasons. Starting four games combined during the 2014-15 campaigns, Helfet made 25 receptions for 315 yards and two touchdowns — both of which coming in 2015. An easier route to playing time opened after Jimmy Graham‘s season-ending injury last season.
But Graham is expected to return soon, and the Seahawks also drafted Nick Vannett in the third round this year. Luke Willson also returns for the Seahawks, who made more moves on Saturday in addition to signing Jahri Evans.
Seattle also waived Brandon Cottom, whom Condotta tabbed as a good bet to be the team’s primary fullback prior to suffering an Achilles injury Thursday, along with tight end Ronnie Shields, running back Tre Madden and defensive end David Perkins.
The Seahawks signed linebacker Kache Palacio, running back Troymaine Pope and wideout Uzoma Nwachukwu.
RFA/ERFA Signings: 4/18/16
We’ll round the latest news on restricted and exclusive-rights free agents here…
- Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins has signed his restricted free agent tender with the Jets, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (Twitter link). Thompkins, a former Patriot and Raider, appeared in seven games for New York last season, hauling in 19 passes.
- Bills defensive tackle Corbin Bryant has signed his RFA tender, tweets Joe Buscaglia of WKBW. Bryant said in February that he was hoping to be retained by Buffalo, and for now, he’ll get his wish.
- The Raiders broadcasted a series of moves today, announcing that quarterback Matt McGloin has signed his second-round RFA tender, while defensive lineman Denico Autry, tight end Gabe Holmes, safety Tevin McDonald, receiver Seth Roberts, and Korey Toomer all signed their ERFA tenders (Twitter link via Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle).
- Center Patrick Lewis has signed his restricted free agent tender with the Seahawks, who also announced that they’ve re-signed exclusive-rights free agents Cooper Helfet (TE), Mohammed Seisay (CB), and Steven Terrell (S).
- The Vikings announced that fullback Zach Line has signed his RFA tender. Line tells Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he always knew he’d re-sign with Minnesota, he just hadn’t been in the area to physically sign the deal.
- Center Braxston Cave, defensive end Brandon Copeland, and safety Isaiah Johnson all signed their ERFA tenders with the Lions, according to Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com.
- The Chiefs have re-signed safety Daniel Sorensen and defensive end Nick Williams, each of whom signed his exclusive-rights tender, per Howard Balzer of USA Today (Twitter link).
- Linebacker Will Compton has signed his ERFA tender with Washington, tweets Balzer.
ERFA Tender Decisions: 3/5/16
Here are today’s tender decisions on exclusive-rights free agents, for players who have three or fewer years of experience in the league.
- The Seahawks have extended exclusive-rights tenders to six players today, including cornerbacks DeShawn Shead and Mohammed Seisay, tight end Cooper Helfet, defensive tackle A.J. Francis, linebacker Eric Pinkins, and defensive back Steven Terrell, and reports Tom Pelissero of USA Today (Twitter links).
- Kick returner Raheem Mostert has officially signed his exclusive-rights tender with the Browns, per his agent Brent Tessler (Twitter link).
Seahawks Sign Nine To Reserve Contracts
THURSDAY, 4:10pm: The Seahawks officially signed Daniels to a reserve/futures contract today, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times (Twitter links).
WEDNESDAY, 4:01pm: The Seahawks have officially signed eight players to reserve/futures contracts for 2014, as Brian McIntyre notes (via Twitter). Tight end Cooper Helfet, defensive back Akeem Auguste, offensive lineman Jared Smith, wide receivers Phil Bates and Arceto Clark, defensive linemen Michael Brooks, D’Anthony Smith, and Dewayne Cherrington all inked deals with the club.
All eight of those players finished the 2013 season on the Seahawks’ practice squad. Since Smith was on the practice squad’s injured list, that leaves one more player who didn’t receive a new deal from Seattle: QB B.J. Daniels. However, McIntyre expects him to ink a contract of his own with the team later this week (Twitter link).
