The Giants will head into the 2018 season without one of their longest-tenured players and one of their 2017 starting safeties, with both Mark Herzlich and Darian Thompson failing to make the team.
A 2017 fifth-round pick, edge defender Avery Moss missed out as well. As did Roger Lewis, a wideout who became needed when the Giants became decimated at receiver last season.
The Giants also released recently signed cornerback Leonard Johnson, who was trying to make a fifth NFL franchise’s 53-man roster. The former Buccaneer, Patriot, Panther and Bill started seven games with Buffalo last season.
One team’s trash can be a rival’s treasure. On Wednesday, the Giants signed defensive tackle A.J. Francis.
Francis was released by the Redskins this week as a part of their defensive line overhaul. The 6’5″, 337-pound lineman has bounced around the NFL, but the Giants are curious to kick the tires on him. Details on Francis’ deal are not currently known, but it is likely a one-year deal for the minimum salary with little or no guarantees. If Francis doesn’t pan out, the Giants can easily move on and release him before the final 53-man cut in September.
Francis has played in nine regular season games – one for the Dolphins, two for the Seahawks, and six for the Redskins. Last year, he had 18 total tackles (five solo) for the Redskins. Interestingly, his best game of the year came in the season finale against the Giants when he recorded six tackles.
The Redskins are cleaning house on the defensive line. The team has informed defensive tackle/end A.J. Francis of his release, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington (on Twitter).
News of Francis’ release came moments after it was learned that defensive lineman Terrell McClain has been cut. The Redskins’ new-look defensive tackle group will be headlined by first-round pick Da’Ron Payne and will likely include fifth-round choice Tim Settle.
Francis has bounced around the NFL since entering the league in 2014, including stints with the Dolphins and Seahawks. Last year, he appeared in six contests for the ‘Skins and totaled 18 tackles.

After a rash of injuries, the Redskins are calling for backup. The Redskins announced that they have promoted linebacker Pete Robertson, nose tackle A.J. Francis, and running back LeShun Daniels from the practice squad. The team also signed center Demetrius Rhaney while placing fellow center Spencer Long (quad) on injured reserve.
The Redskins had several spots to fill after putting Long, wide receiverTerrelle Pryor, and running backChris Thompson on IR. Meanwhile, the Redskins have even more depth concerns. Center Chase Roullier had hand surgery on Monday and tells reporters that he will be out at least a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, linebackers Martrell Spaight and Zach Brown have both been spotted with walking boots.
Washington will have to dig deep and find a way to survive all of the injuries in order to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. At 4-6, the simulations at Football Outsiders peg the Redskins with just a 9% chance of making the postseason.
