Nelson was an effective swing tackle for the Lions in the past three years. While he wasn’t able to stick with the Giants, he’s likely to draw interest elsewhere in the NFL.
The Eagles like Sam a lot at safety, but with a number of veterans atop the depth chart, there wasn’t room for him on the roster. The team plans to retain him on the practice squad should he clear waivers, per Andrew DiCecco of 975 The Fanatic. The Buccaneers have similar plans with Isaac, Taula, and Wisdom.

Smith sustained a torn patellar tendon during a Bengals joint practice with the Bears, ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler reports. He joins Evans in sustaining a season-ending injury during that workout. A 2021 fourth-round pick, Smith was believed to have earned the Bengals’ swing tackle role early last year. But he did not see any game action in Year 3. Having played in just three career games, Smith has seen his career hit a crossroads after this injury. His rookie contract expires after the season. This further depletes a Bengals O-line that will be without first-rounder Amarius Mims for a bit due to a strained pec.
A former Bengals starter, Adeniji joined the Browns in March. A knee injury sidelined Adeniji recently, and while Kevin Stefanski said the veteran O-lineman will miss “a little bit of time,” this transaction will likely lead to an injury settlement that sends him back to free agency for a stretch. The Bengals used Adeniji as a starter in each of their four 2021 playoff games, before spending to upgrade their O-line the following year. Adeniji, a 2020 sixth-rounder, played in one Vikings game last season.
Brown and Lamar Jackson sustained injuries during the Panthers’ most recent preseason game, adding to Carolina’s issues — headlined by Dane Jackson‘s significant hamstring setback — at corner. Formerly a Cowboys regular, Brown has struggled to stick with a team as of late. He spent 2023 with three teams — the Steelers, 49ers and Jets — and played in just two games. This came after Brown was with Dallas for six seasons, starting 69 games.
A five-game starter for the 2021 Super Bowl champion Rams, Hollins played for three teams last season. The former Broncos draftee was with the Packers, Giants and Chargers. He has 10.5 career sacks, one coming last season.
Minor NFL Transactions: 8/27/23
With the preseason over for 30 of the NFL’s 32 teams, many have begun the process of working their rosters down to the eventual 53-man rosters they will open the season with:
Indianapolis Colts
- Waived: WR Tyler Adams, WR Kody Case, G Emil Ekiyor, TE Nick Eubanks, K Lucas Havrisik, TE Michael Jacobson, T Matthew Vanderslice

Las Vegas Raiders
- Placed on IR: RB Brittain Brown, TE Jacob Hollister, WR Isaiah Zuber

- Released: LB Nick Vigil
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Waived: WR Aron Cruickshank
San Francisco 49ers
- Waived: CB Nate Brooks, OLB LaDarius Hamilton, DE Breeland Speaks, LB Kyahva Tezino, DL Spencer Waege
Seattle Seahawks
- Waived: TE Sal Cannella, DE Jordan Ferguson, WR Malik Flowers, CB Benjie Franklin, WR Justin Marshall, CB Chris Steele, RB Wayne Taulapapa
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Waived from IR with injury settlement: CB Don Gardner
- Waived: OLB Hamilcar Rashed
- Released: LB Ulysees Gilbert
Although never quite reaching the heights of his tenure with the Bengals, Vigil has a history as a strong contributor and potential starter at linebacker. Coming off a season that saw him only play in four games for the Cardinals before getting put on injured reserve, Vigil failed to stick in New York and will need to find his next opportunity elsewhere.
Vallejo’s tenure in Minnesota lasted a short two weeks. The special teams specialist will have to keep searching for his 2023 home.

Today’s minor moves:
Carolina Panthers

Ben Burr-Kirven was a fifth-round pick by the Seahawks back in 2019, and he transformed into a key special teamer through his first two seasons in the NFL. However, he suffered a knee injury during the 2021 preseason that ended up wiping out that entire season. The issues persisted in 2022, and after spending that year on PUP, he was ultimately released in March. Coach Pete Carroll apparently reversed course and ended up bringing back the linebacker.
“He’s in a little bit of an experimental mode,” Carroll said earlier this year (via the team’s website). “The surgeries that he has had and the process he is going through, he is making progress. He’s always in the weight room with us. He’s always here working with a tremendous mentality. The nerve issues, really intricate stuff going on, so he’s had to have a really good attitude about it to stay in the fight and he is. He’s planning on getting back out there. So, we are going to give him every chance. If he can do it, this is going to be the place that he does it.”
Xavier Henderson was released today with an injury settlement, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post (via Twitter). The undrafted free agent landed on the physically unable to perform list earlier this week.

Among the additions on today’s list, defensive back A.J. Moore is the most notable. The defensive back spent four years with the Texans to begin his career, compiling 69 tackles in 55 games while primarily playing on special teams. The 27-year-old spent a chunk of last season on the Titans practice squad, and he ultimately got into one game with the big-league club.
Giants Work Out Two Linebackers
While the Giants front office was busy negotiating an unsuccessful extension with running back Saquon Barkley today, the coaching staff was getting a look at some depth on both sides of the ball. According to Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com (on Twitter), the team auditioned linebackers Joe Giles-Harris and Kyahva Tezino. The Giants also worked out running back Mark Thompson.
[RELATED: Giants LB Jarrad Davis Undergoes Surgery]
Giles-Harris is the lone player on the list with any NFL experience, as the linebacker saw time in 17 games between 2019 and 2022. His best season came with the Jaguars in 2020 when he compiled 20 tackles, one sack, and five QB hits in nine games (three starts). Since then, he’s seen time in three regular season games across two seasons with the Bills.
Tezino was a former SDSU standout who later had brief stints with the Patriots and Panthers. He was most recently one of the best defenders in the USFL, finishing second in the league in tackles (94) and tackles for loss (nine) while also chipping in two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
The linebacker workouts follow news that projected starting middle linebacker Jarrad Davis is expected to miss a chunk of time after undergoing knee surgery. The veteran was only slated to start while second-year linebacker Darrian Beavers continues to recover from a torn ACL, and Davis’ absence will only force the team to dig deeper into their LB depth.
The Giants also gave a look at a USFL standout on the other side of the ball. Thompson earned the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award this past season after totaling 14 touchdowns on the ground. The running back was undrafted in 2018 and later had stints with the Ravens, Jets, Lions, and Raiders.
The Giants don’t have a whole lot of experienced RB depth behind Barkley, with Matt Breida representing the team’s only veteran backup at the position. Thompson could provide the coaching staff with another look outside of rookie fifth-round pick Eric Gray, former sixth rounder Gary Brightwell, and 2022 UDFA Jashaun Corbin.

Patriots Sign 16 UDFAs
The Patriots have announced agreements with 16 undrafted free agents. Here is their full list:
- Rashod Berry, TE (Ohio State)
- Myles Bryant, DB (Washington)
- Jake Burt, TE (Boston College)
- Nick Coe, DL (Auburn)
- De’Jon Harris, LB (Arkansas)
- Will Hastings, WR (Auburn)
- Trevon Hill, DE (Miami)
- Brian Lewerke, QB (Michigan State; full story)
- Bill Murray, DL (William & Mary)
- Sean Riley, WR (Syracuse)
- J’Mar Smith, QB (Louisiana Tech; full story)
- J.J. Taylor, RB (Arizona)
- Kyahva Tezino, LB (San Diego State)
- Jeff Thomas, WR (Miami)
- Courtney Wallace, DL (Louisiana Tech)
- Isaiah Zuber, WR (Mississippi State)
This four-receiver group will join a Pats team that both did not draft a wideout and one that rosters a soon-to-be 34-year-old Julian Edelman and a soon-to-be 31-year-old Mohamed Sanu. The latter is entering a contract year.
None of the rookie quartet put up standout career numbers. Thomas, who is 5-foot-10 and 174 pounds, left school early. He surpassed 16 yards per catch in two Hurricane seasons. Zuber transferred from Kansas State but barely eclipsed 200 receiving yards at Mississippi State. The 5-8 Riley served as the Orange’s kick and punt returner. Hastings, who is 5-10 and averaged 20.2 yards per catch as a junior in 2018, will see $57.5K of his rookie deal guaranteed, per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter).
Harris finished his Razorbacks career with three straight 100-plus-tackle seasons and will see a sizable portion of his rookie deal guaranteed. The Pats are guaranteeing $140K of Harris’ contract, per NESN.com’s Doug Kyed (on Twitter). Bryant will receive a $50K guarantee, Kyed adds (via Twitter).
Taylor goes only 5-6, but he surpassed 3,000 rushing yards with the Wildcats in four seasons. While he only topped 30 receptions in one of those (2019), his 2018 season featured 1,434 rushing yards. Berry and Burt bring New England’s rookie tight end total to four, coupling with the two third-round picks the Pats used at the position. The two combined for just 40 career receptions.
