Chargers Finalize 53-Man Roster
The Chargers took care of most of their headline moves before the deadline today. They used today to take care of the remaining moves necessary to get down to the 53-man roster limit. Here are the team’s moves from today:
Waived:

Placed on reserve/PUP:
- WR Jalen Guyton
- DL Otito Ogbonnia
Seventh-round rookie quarterback Max Duggan failed to make the roster behind starter Justin Herbert and backup Easton Stick. At running back, though, undrafted rookie running back Elijah Dotson impressed enough in the preseason to make the active roster in the regular season.
The team will carry a simple, five-man receiving corps into the season with Guyton on the physically unable to perform list. Returning wideouts Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Josh Palmer will be joined by former TCU draft picks Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis.
Cameron Dicker winning the kicking battle led to the trading of Dustin Hopkins and the waiving of Cade York. After making 19 of his 20 kick attempts for the Chargers in his rookie year and converting all 22 of his extra point attempts, Dicker will remain the team’s placekicker moving forward.
Minor NFL Transactions: 8/27/23

Although never quite reaching the heights of his tenure with the Bengals, Vigil has a history as a strong contributor and potential starter at linebacker. Coming off a season that saw him only play in four games for the Cardinals before getting put on injured reserve, Vigil failed to stick in New York and will need to find his next opportunity elsewhere.
Vallejo’s tenure in Minnesota lasted a short two weeks. The special teams specialist will have to keep searching for his 2023 home.

Covington represents by far the most experienced player being let go. He spent just one season in Los Angeles, starting three of his 16 appearances. While the 28-year-old Canadian set a new career-high in tackles with 52, he was part of the league’s third-worst run defense. That, coupled with Covington’s small roster bonus, made him a logical cut candidate.
The Chargers have a crowded backfield to work with, and one main training camp storyline has been the competition to establish the pecking order behind Austin Ekeler. By waiving Nabers, however, the team can keep one more back on the 53-man roster. Given their passing efficiency, eliminating the fullback position from the offense would allow them to keep the former UDFA on the practice squad (if at all); if not, Nabers will need to find one of the few remaining teams with a spot for his skillset.
Surratt carries the most upside amongst the TE departures. The converted WR didn’t play during his rookie season, but demonstrated his talent in college, including a 1,000-yerd season at Wake Forest. Given his absence from the 2020 college season, as well as the 2021 NFL campaign, though, keeping the six-foot-three, 215-pounder as a depth option behind Gerald Everett could better be done via the practice squad.

Packers Sign 7 UDFAs
The Packers have added on to their rookie class. The team agreed to terms with seven undrafted free agents today (per the team’s website):
- Jacob Capra, OL, San Diego State
- Coy Cronk, OL, Iowa
- Jon Dietzen, OL, Wisconsin
- Bailey Gaither, WR, San Jose State
- Jack Heflin, DL, Iowa
- Carlo Kemp, LB, Michigan
- Christian Uphoff, S, Illinois State
Dietzen will surely be a fan favorite in camp, as the offensive lineman grew up in nearby Black Creek, Wisconsin. Dietzen actually retired from football after the 2018 campaign, but he returned this past season and started all seven games for Wisconsin, including time at left guard, right guard, and left tackle.
Some scouts expected Uphoff to a be a fourth- or fifth-round pick (per The Athletic’s Bob McGinn), but he ended up falling off the board entirely. The Illinois State product had a standout season, but he suffered a hamstring injury that ultimately put a damper on his pro day. However, the prospect isn’t letting the draft process ruin his hopes of reaching the NFL.
“It happened,” Uphoff said of his workout (via McGinn). “If I would have had better numbers, I’m sure I would have been drafted. You’ve got to deal with it.”
As The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman tweets, these signings take the Packers to 88 players, leaving room for two more additions. The reporter believes the organization could use both of those spots on quarterbacks, whether it be rookies or veterans.
