Gipson is changing clubs for the third time this season after getting claimed off waivers by the Giants for the second time this year. After starting the season with the Jets and getting cut after a crucial fumble in Week 1, Gipson found his way across town to the other New York team. The Giants waived him after about two and a half weeks, and he was claimed by Philadelphia. His stint with the Eagles has been his longest with any team this year, but he’ll return to the Giants after getting waived once again.
Chargers Place DT Da’Shawn Hand On IR
Chargers defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand left last week’s loss to the Commanders after only appearing for four defensive snaps. The groin injury that forced Hand out of the game kept him from practicing all week, but instead of just an “out” injury designation for the weekend, the Chargers have ensured he’ll be out for the next four games after placing him on injured reserve today. 
Hand looked to be having a career year in his eighth year of NFL play, but his production will certainly be hindered by this elongated absence. The 30-year-old had been working as a full-time starter for the first time in his career. Hand started eight games in his rookie campaign with the Lions but only logged five starts in the six seasons between then and now. He had already matched those five starts in his time with the Chargers this year.
Hand’s eight rookie starts were well-earned for the fourth-round pick out of Alabama, but the promising start was marred by ending the season on IR. From there, injuries continued to dictate the course of his career. He started two of the three games he was able to appear in for his sophomore campaign and was relegated to a rotational role in Year 3.
In 2021, the final year of his rookie contract, after missing the first seven weeks of the season, the Lions saw him active for three games before sending him to IR once again. Ultimately, they released him, and he spent the remainder of the year in short stints with the Colts and Titans. He played two snaps for the Titans in 2022 before being placed on IR for the remainder of that season.
After only appearing in five games over two full seasons, Hand signed with the Dolphins and had his first mostly healthy season, appearing in a career-high 16 games. Miami held onto him for 2024, and he had, perhaps, the strongest year of his career. Appearing in every game of the season for the first time in his career and making his first two starts since 2020, Hand delivered career highs in total tackles (31), tackles for loss (5), and quarterback hits (4) that season.
The strong two seasons in Miami led to a decent contract in Los Angeles, where he would finally get his chance to start full time. With 10 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, and a sack through only five games, Hand was on track to set multiple new career highs. Considering he wasn’t placed on IR immediately following his injury diagnosis, it seems likely that he’ll be a strong candidate to return to the active roster once his practice window has been opened after four games have passed.
Taking Hand’s slot on the 53-man roster will be practice squad offensive tackle Bobby Hart. A former starter for the Giants and Bengals, Hart hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2022. Hart was added to the practice squad recently as Los Angeles deals with injuries to starting tackles Rashawn Slater (season-ending) and Joe Alt and backup tackles Trey Pipkins and Savion Washington.
Joining Hart to reinforce the offensive line off the practice squad this weekend will be David Sharpe. Unlike Hart, as a standard gameday practice squad elevation, Sharpe will revert back to the practice squad following Sunday’s game. The team’s other elevation will be used on recent practice squad addition Nyheim Hines, who will back up Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal as they fill in for Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris, who both currently reside on IR.

It is not known what injury Colson suffered — teams do not have to disclose injuries until Week 1 — but this is a significant setback for the former Jim Harbaugh Michigan pupil. Colson entered training camp with a chance to earn the starting linebacker job alongside Daiyan Henley; instead, he will miss the season. Harris and Leonard will be eligible to return from IR after four games; their IR-return placements drop the Bolts’ injury activation count from eight to six.
It is possible the Chargers circle back to Heinicke, who is a vested veteran. A practice squad stashing could make sense, but Trey Lance is also a vested veteran now. The Bolts are keeping the former No. 3 overall pick on their 53-man roster, while Heinicke’s status is uncertain. The Chargers re-signed Heinicke to a one-year, $2.5MM deal. They are positioned to eat $2MM in dead money due to the guarantees given to their 2024 backup.
Chargers Sign T David Sharpe
In the wake of Rashawn Slater‘s season-ending knee injury, the Chargers are taking the free agent route to add offensive tackle depth. David Sharpe has a deal in place with Los Angeles, as first reported by KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. The move is now official, per a team announcement.
Sharpe’s last regular season action came in 2023 when he made eight appearances off the bench with the Panthers. He recently visited the Dolphins without an agreement being worked out. In the case of the Chargers, though, Slater’s absence created the need for veteran depth.
With 45 appearances to his name, Sharpe will offer experience to the Bolts provided he survives roster cuts. The 29-year-old has only made six starts in the NFL, with the most recent one coming in 2020. Los Angeles will move forward with Joe Alt filling in for Slater on the blindside with Trey Pipkins taking on a starting gig at right tackle. The team’s depth chart behind those two will be sorted out over the coming weeks.
Sharpe spent time with the Ravens in 2021 and ’22. As a result, he is a familiar face for Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz and offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The former fourth-rounder will look to earn a swing tackle role during the remainder of the offseason.
Sharpe has rarely been attached to a contract worth more than the veteran minimum, and given his absence from regular season action in 2024 that should be expected to continue with this Bolts pact. The team entered Saturday with roughly $31.5MM in cap space, so the Sharpe addition will not impact any other moves being planned as a return to the postseason is sought out in 2025.
Dolphins Sign OL Germain Ifedi
The Dolphins have signed veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Starting right tackle Austin Jackson is expected to miss a few weeks of camp after suffering an injury in practice on Saturday, so Ifedi will at least provide experienced depth in Jackson’s absence (though the team does believe Jackson will be in the Week 1 starting lineup).
Ifedi, 31, has 117 apperances and 90 starts to his name. While most of that time has come at right tackle, he has also seen his fair share of snaps at right guard. In 2024, he started seven games at left tackle for the Browns’ injury-depleted offensive line.
That was the most action he saw since his seven-start 2021 campaign with the Bears, and there is a reason why he was still on the open market in early August. The former first-round pick of the Seahawks played every snap for Seattle during his first four years in the league from 2016-19, but he never developed as the team hoped, and his fifth-year option was declined as a result.
That led him to Chicago, where he spent the 2020-21 seasons. He operated as a full-time starter during that stint, excepting the games he missed due to injury. His Pro Football Focus evaluations were much better as a Bear than they had been as a Seahawk, but they were still roughly average, and he was unable to carve out a meaningful role for himself with the Falcons in 2022. He then spent all of the 2023 slate riding the Bills’ bench and did not see a single snap.
His time as an emergency LT with Cleveland did not go well, with PFF considering him the seventh-worst tackle in the league out of 81 qualified players. In fairness, he was miscast as a blindside blocker, and his work with the Bears suggested he can be a competent starter and a solid pass-blocker on the right side of the line. It may or may not be enough to land him a spot on the 53-man roster, but the Dolphins could certainly have done worse in their search for camp reinforcements.
That search also included players like Zack Bailey, Yodny Cajuste, Chris Hubbard, and David Sharpe, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, who indicated that quartet worked out for the team along with Ifedi. Obviously, Ifedi impressed the most.
In a corresponding move, Miami waived fourth-string quarterback Brett Gabbert (via ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques). And, in a rare piece of good news for the club’s secondary, the ‘Fins activated free agent addition Ifeatu Melifonwu from the active/NFI list (via Louis-Jacques). Melifonwu could start at safety alongside trade acquisition Minkah Fitzpatrick.

The Falcons have added a notable name to their special teams corps in Jakeem Grant. The long-time Dolphins returner has collected six ST touchdowns in his career (four via punts, two via kickoffs), and he’s even hauled in 100 catches. However, the veteran hasn’t seen the field since the 2021 campaign while spending the past few years on Cleveland’s practice squad.
With Dak Prescott done for the season, the Cowboys have added some extra QB depth. In comes old friend Will Grier, who spent the 2021 and 2022 campaigns in Dallas. The former third-round pick has since bounced around the NFL, including stops with the Bengals, Patriots, and Chargers in just 2023. Grier still only has two career appearances on his resume, both coming with the Panthers in 2019.
The Texans have added some experienced OL depth in Cameron Erving. The veteran is coming off a 2023 campaign where he started two of his three appearances for the Saints, and he barely played in 11 appearances with the Panthers in 2022. Still, the 32-year-old brings 98 games (58 starts) of experience to Houston, a factor that could be valuable down the stretch. To make room on the practice squad, the Texans moved on from cornerback Desmond King. The veteran has only seen time in one game for Houston this season, although he’s not far removed from a 2022 campaign where he started 13 games for the Texans.

Keenum was headed into the second season of a two-year deal with his original NFL team, but a major injury will sidetrack the veteran arm. A foot injury will sideline the 36-year-old quarterback, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweets. Keenum is expected to be down for three or four months, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini adds. Houston still has Davis Mills, who is in a contract year, as its top backup behind C.J. Stroud.
A calf injury will shut down Harris for the time being, Wilson adds. The Texans used both their allotted IR-return moves. The team used the 2022 third-round pick as a 12-game starter last season. Harris has played at least 71% of the Texans’ defensive snaps in both of his seasons, explaining his being prioritized via the NFL’s IR rule tweak. Despite being a 2022 UDFA, Hinish has been a key rotational player in Houston in each of his two pro seasons.
Horton is in remission from his bout with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The second-year player completed his final treatment this spring but did not practice with the team during training camp. The Texans’ run of WR cuts leaves 2022 second-rounder John Metchie, who missed his rookie season after a leukemia diagnosis, and Robert Woods on the roster behind starters Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs. Cutting Jordan, a sixth-round pick from Louisville, leaves Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale and Cam Akers rostered behind Joe Mixon.
