Bears Drop Roster To 53
The Bears have set their initial 53-man roster. Here is the full breakdown of the moves they made on Tuesday ahead of the cutdown deadline in addition to releasing veteran quarterback Brett Rypien:
Released:
- FB Khari Blasingame
- WR Collin Johnson
- TE Stephen Carlson
- OL Aviante Collins
- DL Byron Cowart
- CB Greg Stroman
- S Adrian Colbert
- S Tarvarius Moore
Waived:
- QB Austin Reed
- TE Brenden Bates
- OL Theo Benedet
- OL Jake Curhan
- DL Jamree Kromah
- DL Dashaun Mallory
- LB Micah Baskerville
- DL Carl Jones Jr.
- DB Leon Jones
- DB Reddy Steward
- DB Ro Torrence
- LS Cameron Lyons
- P Corliss Waitman
Placed on IR:
- WR Dante Pettis
Placed on IR (designated for return):
- OL Larry Borom
- DE Jacob Martin
With Rypien out of the picture, it will be interesting to see if Reed is kept the organization with a practice squad deal. For the time being, Chicago’s only passers are Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent. It comes as no surprise those two were kept on the 53-man roster, of course, but it neither Rypien nor Reed are available in the next few days, the Bears will be in the market for a depth addition.
Waitman was one of two punters in place during the offseason, so the decision to cut him means fourth-round rookie Tory Taylor has won the gig. Waitman, 29, played for the Steelers in 2021 and the Broncos the following season. He led the NFL in punts during his full campaign in Denver, but he did see any regular season action in 2023. Waitman signed a futures deal in the winter, the Taylor selection suggested he would need to find a new home once roster cuts took place.
Borom and Martin were not named to the initial 53-man roster, per a new role for 2024. Teams may designate two players to return from IR before naming their rosters, although they are still required to miss at least the first four games of the season. In Pettis’ case, on the other hand, today’s move confirms he will be sidelined for the entire campaign.

The former fourth-round pick spent the first three seasons of his career with the Falcons, including a 2022 campaign where he collected a career-high 107 tackles in 16 games (12 starts). However, since that breakout season, the linebacker has struggled to hold a job. He was waived by Atlanta back in August and was claimed by the Bears, but Chicago ended up cutting him at the end of the preseason. Walker later joined the Raiders practice squad and spent about a month in Las Vegas.

Wilkinson’s loss will be notable for the Cardinals, given his status as an entrenched starter at the left guard spot. The 28-year-old joined Arizona on a one-year deal worth the veteran’s minimum in free agency after stints in Denver, Chicago and Atlanta. Trystan Colon replaced him in the starting lineup in Week 7, and that will likely continue for the time being. Wilkinson will be out for at least four weeks as a result of the IR move.
Ridgeway has been out since Week 1, his Texans debut. The former 49er joined the Texans in a move which allowed him to continue working under head coach DeMeco Ryans. Ridgeway ended last season on IR, so he will be looking for an extended run of availability in his new home. A veteran of 78 games (and 19 starts), he will aim to carve out a rotational role up front.
Peters was brought in by the Seahawks while they were dealing with injury problems at both tackle spots. Blindside blocker Charles Cross has since returned, so Peters’ most familiar spot will not be available if he is to make his Seattle debut on Sunday. The fact the latter is healthy and in game shape does mean, however, that he will be eligible to play in a 19th NFL season.
Bears Move LT Braxton Jones To IR
The Bears now have two starting offensive linemen on IR. Braxton Jones joined Teven Jenkins on the injured list Wednesday. The second-year left tackle sustained a neck injury.
Jones has started all 19 NFL games he has played, going from Division I-FCS-produced fifth-round pick to the Bears’ Week 1 blindside starter last year. He now must miss at least four contests. Larry Borom, a previous Chicago starter, and Ja’Tyre Carter reside as replacement options, per Matt Eberflus.
Not only has Jones never missed a game, he has been on the field for every Bears offensive snap since debuting last year. But the Southern Utah alum’s career will pause for the time being. While Jenkins was once viewed as a left tackle, Jones has since taken over the role. The guard move has proven effective for Jenkins, with the 2021 second-rounder showing far more promise inside. Jenkins is out until at least Week 5; Wednesday’s transaction will sideline Jones until at least Week 7.
The Bears, who also played without free agent signing Nate Davis in Week 2, have Jones and Jenkins installed as staples on a reconstructed O-line. Jenkins is set to move to left guard upon return, joining Cody Whitehair in changing positions. Though, Whitehair — tabbed to move back to center — is still at guard due to Jenkins’ injury. The Bears have used 2022 free agency pickup Lucas Patrick at center to start the season. Jones, however, was the only Bears starting blocker asked to stay in the same position he played last season.
A 2021 fifth-round pick out of Missouri, Borom has 17 starts on his NFL resume. The Bears have primarily used Borom at right tackle, though he did not hang onto the gig to close last season. Riley Reiff replaced Borom during the 2022 slate, and even after Reiff departed in free agency this year, Wright coming off the board at No. 10 overall gave him a clear path to the first-string gig. Carter, a 2022 seventh-rounder, filled in for Davis last week but has only played in four career games.
To replace Jones on their 53-man roster, the Bears signed tackle Aviante Collins off their practice squad. Despite entering the NFL as a 2017 UDFA, Collins has played in just seven career games. He most recently saw time as a Cowboys backup last season.

- LB Barrington Wade
- LB Mykal Walker
- S Kendall Williamson
Waived/injured:
The moves actually reduce Chicago’s roster to 52 players, so additions are certainly coming.
Trevis Gipson is a bit of a surprise cut after the former fifth-round pick got into 33 games (19 starts) for the Bears over the past two years. The defensive lineman showed some pass-rushing prowess during his rookie season, compiling seven sacks, seven tackles for loss, and seven QB hits. His numbers took a bit of a step back in 2022, with the Tulsa product finishing with only three sacks. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (via Twitter), the Bears worked on a trade for Gipson and had “teams involved” in the bidding but couldn’t come to terms before today’s roster deadline.
Trestan Ebner was another Bears draft pick that got into 17 games last season. The 2022 sixth-round pick ended up getting 26 touches on offense, collecting 62 yards from scrimmage while coughing up two fumbles. Ebner also returned 10 kickoffs for Chicago last season. The running back has been in concussion protocol since the early parts of the preseason, and there’s a chance he reverts to the Bears’ injured reserve if he goes unclaimed.
