Colts Audition Jalen Collins, Dontae Johnson

Free agent cornerback Jalen Collins was reinstated by the NFL earlier today after serving a 10-game suspension, and he’s already landed an audition. Collins worked out for the Colts on Wednesday, tweets Field Yates of ESPN.com. Indianapolis also looked at fellow defensive back Dontae Johnson, per Howard Balzer (Twitter link).

Collins has already faced multiple league-imposed bans during his brief NFL career, and his most recent 10-game suspension was actually his second of that length. While Collins’ previous bans were reportedly due to performance-enhancing drug use, it’s unclear what caused his latest suspension. However, as Matt Miller of Bleacher Report notes (via Twitter), Colts general manager Chris Ballard has never been afraid to target players with off-field issues.

Still only 25 years old, Collins flashed potential in parts of two seasons with the Falcons (2015-16). A former second-round pick, Collins started eight games for the Falcons and played in 24. He also started all three of Atlanta’s games in the 2016 playoffs, including Super Bowl LI.

Johnson, 26, spent four seasons (including one as a starter) with the 49ers before latching on with the Bills earlier this year. He played in only one game with Buffalo before being cut, but he’s hit the workout circuit since, auditioning for the Lions, Browns, and Dolphins.

Colts’ Joe Haeg Designated For Return

The Colts’ offensive line is about to get even stronger. Tackle/guard Joe Haeg has been designated as the team’s second and final player to return from IR this year, per a team announcement. 

The third-year pro was placed on IR Sept. 28 after suffering an ankle injury in the Colts’ Week 3 loss to the Eagles. Prior to that, Haeg had started Indy’s first three games of the season at right tackle.

Even without Haeg, the Colts’ offensive line has been dominant as of late. Quarterback Andrew Luck has not been sacked in four straight games, and the Colts racked up 200 rushing yards in consecutive games against the Bills and Raiders.

Haeg’s skill set and versatility should only help to further bolster the Colts’ front five. The former fifth-round pick will probably spend the bulk of his time on the outside, but he can also move around a bit. As a rookie, he started games at left guard, right guard, and right tackle.

Could Colts Make Move For Le'Veon Bell?

  • As for who will pay Bell, the Colts and Jets stand to possess more than $100MM in cap space in 2019. The Bills and Raiders will also have plenty of money to spend, though both teams have needs at several positions. Kaboly pinpoints the Jets, who don’t have much in the way of long-term solutions beyond Sam Darnold, on offense. While the Jets also have needs at just about every position on offense, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News writes they should sign Bell — even if it forces an overpay — citing Darnold’s rookie contract as a window for bigger free agent moves. This may be the team that would make Bell’s plan worthwhile. They gave out lavish deals to Darrelle Revis and Trumaine Johnson, and now Mike Maccagnan may be entering a win-or-else offseason. The Colts have not spent wildly in free agency in Chris Ballard‘s first two seasons, however.

Colts Cut RB Robert Turbin

The Colts made four second-round picks in this year’s draft but have not had much time to evaluate one of those selections. That will change Sunday after Friday’s activation of defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis.

Additionally, Indianapolis added another front-seven player in promoting linebacker Skai Moore from its practice squad. To make room on their roster, the Colts cut veteran running back Robert Turbin and wide receiver Steve Ishmael.

Turbin spent parts of three seasons with the Colts, playing in 23 games with the team since 2016. However, Marlon Mack‘s return and the late-round additions of Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins didn’t leave much room for the seventh-year player. His season delayed by a suspension, Turbin played in just two 2018 games and received just four carries.

Set to turn 30 next month, Turbin has played for four teams — the Seahawks, Browns and Cowboys coming before a lengthy Colts stay. His most relevant NFL work came for the 2016 Colts, with whom he rushed for seven of his nine career touchdowns. Turbin, though, hasn’t exceeded three yards per carry since that season. He hasn’t topped 4.0 in a full season since 2015.

The Colts designated Lewis as an IR-return player last week and look set to deploy him for the first time on Sunday. Lewis went on IR because of a foot injury. The Colts view Lewis, who played defensive end with the Buckeyes, as a three technique in the long-term, per SI.com’s Albert Breer (on Twitter).

Colts To Activate Tyquan Lewis

The Colts are set to activate second-round pick Tyquan Lewis for Sunday’s game, coach Frank Reich told reporters. The defensive end should help to bolster defense that has been coming on in recent weeks.

Lewis, a 6’4″ Ohio State product, tallied 23 sacks over the course of his final three seasons in college. A foot injury landed him on IR in late August, but he’s back to full health and ready to contribute.

The Colts are riding high after back-to-back wins over the Bills and Raiders, but next up is a talented Jaguars team this week that is anxious to snap a four-game losing streak. The winner of this game will keep playoff dreams alive while the loser will effectively be out of the postseason picture.

The Colts are in the bottom third of the league with just 21 sacks through eight games. Lewis could give them a boost in that department while providing relief for starters Margus Hunt and Jabaal Sheard.
