Broncos Place OL Matt Peart On IR, Promote OL Calvin Throckmorton

For a second straight week, the Broncos will move their starting left guard to IR. After placing Ben Powers on the injured list with a biceps injury, the Broncos are sliding Matt Peart off the 53-man roster.

A knee malady will send Peart to IR, according to 9News’ Mike Klis. They are moving veteran O-lineman Calvin Throckmorton to the 53-man roster from the practice squad in a corresponding move, Klis adds. Denver will also bump special-teamer J.T. Gray to the roster from the Ravens’ P-squad, with Klis adding tight end Garret Wallow is heading to IR.

Peart is believed to have suffered the injury on the third play of the Broncos’ London-based matchup against the Jets, per Klis. Peart struggled in the game, committing three penalties (including two holding infractions), but was playing hurt. An otherwise healthy Broncos O-line will need to make another adjustment at left guard.

Re-signed this offseason, Peart became the next man up for Powers — who had not missed a game during his Broncos tenure until the London trip. The team still has some options here, including Throckmorton. A former Saints spot starter, Throckmorton lined up with New Orleans’ first-stringers in 20 games from 2021-22. This included 14 starts during Sean Payton‘s 2021 New Orleans finale. Throckmorton, however, has played in only three games since joining the Broncos in 2024.

Denver uses former UDFA Alex Palczewski as its sixth O-lineman in jumbo packages, but he is a swingman as well. The team also has backup center Alex Forsyth, who lost the 2024 center competition to Luke Wattenberg, as an option now that Peart is out of the picture for at least four games. The Broncos hope Powers will be back before the regular season ends, but they will need to make another switch for the foreseeable future.

A former Giants third-round pick, Peart worked mostly as a backup during his New York rookie-deal stay. He has started at both guard and tackle in Denver, having re-signed on a two-year, $7MM deal. None of Peart’s 2026 money is guaranteed.

Although Gray comes via the Baltimore taxi squad, he played for Payton in New Orleans. Obtained as a 2018 UDFA, Gray soared to three All-Pro teams in seven years as a Saints special-teamer. This included four seasons with Payton at the helm. Technically a DB, Gray earned first-team All-Pro acclaim as a special-teamer in Payton’s final Saints season (2021). Gray and Throckmorton add more ex-Saints to Payton’s third Broncos roster, which includes tight ends Adam Trautman and Lucas Krull, fullback Adam Prentice, defensive linemen Malcolm Roach and Jordan Jackson and kicker Wil Lutz as ex-New Orleans presences on Denver’s 53.

Jets Made Last-Ditch Push For S Talanoa Hufanga

The legal tampering period annually brings waves of unofficial agreements, as official announcements cannot come until the next league year starts. This current arrangement leaves room for teams to poach free agents after they have already committed elsewhere. Although this does not happen often, instances have occurred that led to 11th-hour changes from free agents.

It appears the Jets were involved in an effort to sway a high-end defender’s commitment last week. Talanoa Hufanga agreed to join the Broncos on a three-year deal, doing so hours before ex-49ers teammate Dre Greenlaw agreed to sign with the AFC West team. Hufanga, however, drew a subsequent Jets push.

The Jets attempted to pry Hufanga from the Broncos’ grasp after reports of the deal surfaced, 9News’ Mike Klis notes. Gang Green had been connected to the Jevon Holland market, but Hufanga may have been higher on the team’s list. Holland did not agree to terms (with the Giants) until Day 2 of the tampering period. As Day 1 progressed, the Jets made their case after Hufanga’s camp had agreed to Broncos terms. Hufanga did not come off his decision and is heading to Denver.

This overtime duel for Hufanga pitted Broncos GM George Paton against former lieutenant Darren Mougey, whom the Jets hired as GM this offseason. The former John Elway hire moved onto a lower-cost option at safety once Hufanga kept his Broncos commitment.

A 2022 first-team All-Pro who battled injury issues over the past two seasons, Hufanga signed a three-year, $39MM Broncos deal. The actual terms do not match the initial report, which indicated Denver went to $45MM in total for the multiyear safety starter. Hufanga’s market did not quite match where Holland, Tre’von Moehrig and Camryn Bynum‘s respective free agency forays went. It is unclear if the Jets were offering more money, but it is unlikely they were preparing to make a substantially bigger investment. After their Hufanga push failed, the Jets signed ex-Jaguars safety Andre Cisco to a one-year, $8.5MM pact soon after.

Hufanga, 26, will be set to start alongside Brandon Jones in Denver. He and Greenlaw join former 49ers teammates Mike McGlinchey and D.J. Jones as Broncos starters; Jones had re-signed to stay in Denver the night before the tampering period began. Hufanga’s Broncos agreement includes $20MM guaranteed at signing.

Elsewhere on the Broncos’ roster, their Jarrett Stidham re-signing (two years, $12MM) came with $6.99MM guaranteed at signing, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweets. The Broncos are guaranteeing $2MM of their backup QB’s $5.99MM 2026 base salary, providing a runway for the ex-Patriots draftee to extend his Denver run to at least four seasons.

Although Matt Peart could not escape our Minor NFL Transactions section during a frenzied first day of the tampering period, the Denver swingman received a nice raise on his second Broncos contract. Peart’s second Denver deal is worth $7MM over two years, Klis adds. The Broncos, who had Peart at just $1.29MM last season, retained 2026 flexibility by only guaranteeing the backup $775K for injury beyond 2025. Peart, 27, made two starts for the team in 2024. Denver returning UDFA Alex Palczewski as well provides decent protection in the event McGlinchey or LT Garett Bolles miss time.

Broncos To Sign G Calvin Throckmorton

The reach of Saints-based inside jokes expanded once again for the Broncos on Monday. Sean Payton is bringing in another of his former New Orleans charges, with 9News’ Mike Klis indicating offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton is joining the Broncos.

Although the Broncos released Chris Manhertz this offseason, they re-signed Wil Lutz, Adam Trautman and Lil’Jordan Humphrey last month. The team also signed defensive tackle Malcolm Roach from the Saints. Throckmorton competed against Roach in practice for two seasons but spent the 2023 campaign with the Panthers and Titans.

The Panthers waived Throckmorton last year, doing so after he had made seven starts for a team that lost guard starter Brady Christensen in Week 1 and had Austin Corbett out of the mix until late October. Also sustaining a number of injuries up front, the Titans claimed Throckmorton and used him as a backup in six games. The Titans made Throckmorton an offer, per Klis, but he will instead opt to rejoin Payton (and former O-line coach Zach Strief) in Denver.

Throckmorton, 27, made 14 starts for the Saints in Payton’s final New Orleans season (2021). He has worked almost exclusively at guard in the pros. During the 2021 slate in New Orleans, the 2020 UDFA logged 626 snaps at left guard and 282 at right guard. The Saints lost Andrus Peat to a torn pec midway through that season, and they played five games without center Erik McCoy as well. Throckmorton added six starts in 2022.

Pro Football Focus has not viewed Throckmorton as a quality guard, ranking him near the bottom among regulars throughout his career. The Oregon product, however, obviously brings familiarity with Payton and Strief. The Broncos enjoyed good health along their O-line last season; starting guards Quinn Meinerz and Ben Powers started throughout. Both remain under contract, but Throckmorton will enter the mix to work as an interior swingman. Peart is tentatively in place as the team’s swing tackle, with The Athletic’s Dan Duggan noting his one-year deal is for $1.3MM ($368K guaranteed).

The team losing center Lloyd Cushenberry (to the Titans) in free agency could lead to one of the 2023 backups — 2023 seventh-rounder Alex Forsyth or 2022 fifth-rounder Luke Wattenberg — moving into the lineup, though the team could still add a higher-level investment at the spot as well. One of the holdovers moving into the lineup would free up an interior backup spot. Throckmorton supplying 27 career starts, along with his familiarity with the Broncos’ offensive system, would stand to help his cause at making Denver’s 53-man roster.

Broncos To Sign T Matt Peart

Cameron Fleming played out another one-year Broncos contract, leaving the team’s swing tackle position open. Sean Payton and Co. have identified a candidate for the gig.

Denver is bringing in Matt Peart on a one-year deal, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter tweets. Peart played out his four-year Giants rookie contract, working mostly as a backup in that span. Although the Broncos have parted with a few high-profile starters this offseason, tackles Garett Bolles and Mike McGlinchey remain in place.

Fleming played the past three seasons with the Broncos. While tackle injuries forced the veteran swingman into action frequently in 2021 and ’22, Bolles and McGlinchey stayed healthy last season. Fleming only made one start, as Bolles played 17 games and McGlinchey 16. Denver’s offensive line was one of the league’s healthiest units, with only one starter — McGlinchey — missing time. The six-year right tackle was only down for one game, representing a bounce-back effort for a Broncos team littered with injuries up front during Nathaniel Hackett‘s brief stint in charge the year prior.

A 2020 third-round pick, Peart won the Giants’ swing job out of training camp last year. He did not see too much time despite the Giants running into an injury spree up front. Despite Andrew Thomas missing time and Evan Neal being down for the second half of the season, Peart made only one start — in Week 18 — during his contract year.

The UConn alum started seven games over the course of his Giants tenure — five in 2021 — but cleared the 150-snap threshold in just one season. A 2022 ACL tear took Peart out of the mix; now two years removed from that injury, he should be in better form compared to last season. The Broncos could be in the mix to draft a potential left tackle heir apparent this year, as Bolles’ contract expires after the 2024 season. For now, however, Peart would be positioned as the team’s swing tackle.

Facyson has not played all season, but the Raiders opened his practice window on Dec. 6, making him eligible to return to the field. The 29-year-old played for the Colts last season, but he spent the previous year with the Raiders, starting nine of his 12 games. Facyson is under contract through 2024, but none of his $2.27MM salary is guaranteed. Logging some game action down the stretch could thus be beneficial to his roster security.

Neal has missed the past five games due to an ankle injury, and today’s move means he will be shut down for the remainder of the season. The 2022 first-rounder underwhelmed when on the field, to the point where a switch to guard was suggested. No such move has been given consideration, but Neal will nevertheless face considerable expectations to rebound in 2024. Peart will have the chance to see playing time late in the year after suffering a shoulder injury in Week 5.

Roster gymnastics at quarterback continues for the Patriots, who will again take the chance no one will claim Cunningham. New England waived the rookie UDFA in August and stashed him on its practice squad, and ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss notes that is likely to happen again — provided no team claims him. The Pats promoted the Louisville product earlier this month, but after playing him in Week 6, they sat him in Week 7. Although the Patriots designated Flowers for return from IR on Oct. 4, they will cut ties with their former starter rather than use a roster spot on his activation by Wednesday.

The Giants have now added two running backs this week, with Jackson following Jashaun Corbin‘s return from the Panthers’ practice squad. Injuries to Gray and Gary Brightwell led to these moves. Gray sustained a calf injury in Week 7, leading the Giants to insert veteran Sterling Shepard as their punt returner. Shepard muffed a punt that led to the Commanders’ only score. Peart had operated as a backup tackle. He joins Andrew Thomas‘ initial replacement, Joshua Ezeudu, on IR. Guard Shane Lemieux is also on IR.

The Texans initially released Littleton due to roster-reorganizing purposes, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, but the offseason pickup remains in the team’s plans. Houston cut Littleton to make room for waiver claim Myjai Sanders, but after waiving cornerback D’Angelo Ross on Monday, the team is re-signing the veteran linebacker. Littleton, 30, played sparingly in the Texans’ six games this season, logging only 17 defensive snaps.

Giants Did Not Look Into High-Priced FA Guards; LT Andrew Thomas Out For Week 2

SEPTEMBER 17: Thomas is indeed inactive for Sunday’s game, as the Giants will play it safe with their blindside blocker. An improved performance compared to Week 1 will be needed up front for New York, but their O-line will be shorthanded against the Cardinals.

SEPTEMBER 14: First- or second-round picks are stationed at both tackle spots and center along the Giants’ offensive line, but middling guard investments join the Andrew Thomas–Evan Neal–John Michael Schmitz trio. Against the Cowboys, the Giants’ O-line plan did not hold up.

Dallas’ top-tier pass rush sacked Daniel Jones seven times and tallied 15 quarterback hits in the 40-0 drubbing Sunday night. ESPN’s pass block win rate metric graded both Neal and right guard Mark Glowinski in the bottom three at their respective positions in Week 1, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan notes.

The team used Glowinski and Ben Bredeson as its guard starters. This came after a lengthy competition, one that featured 2022 third-round pick Joshua Ezeudu vying for a role. The Giants expected Ezeudu to beat out Bredeson, a 2021 trade acquisition, for the left guard job, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post notes. This optimism helped influence the Giants to not pursue a notable free agency guard addition. The team had been mentioned as interested in retaining Nick Gates, but the Commanders signed him and deployed the ex-Giants starter at center in Week 1.

The Giants preferred to devote funds to retaining their own talent this offseason, giving Jones, Thomas and Dexter Lawrence pricey extensions. Saquon Barkley‘s $10.1MM franchise tag also limited how Big Blue could devote its free agency dollars. The team had also given Glowinski a three-year, $18.3MM deal ($11.4MM guaranteed) in 2022. Despite Pro Football Focus rating Glowinski as a top-30 guard last year, the Giants held a three-way guard battle in training camp. The 31-year-old blocker kept his RG gig but enters Week 2 under a microscope after his showing against the Cowboys.

Outside options do exist at guard for the Giants. Justin Pugh, who began his career with the team and started at guard and tackle following a 2013 first-round investment, has expressed interest in rejoining the team. Pugh, 33, is coming off a torn ACL sustained in October of last year. The five-year Cardinals starter said he was eyeing a Giants return in August, though the Syracuse alum has not been closely tied to a team since he received clearance to resume football work.

Oddly, Dalton Risner also remains a free agent. The four-year Broncos starter entered free agency as, at worst, a second-tier option at guard. But he did not sign anywhere and took the surprising path of remaining unattached entering the year. A handful of teams showed interest in Risner, who may well be waiting for an injury to shake up a team’s O-line plans. The 28-year-old blocker probably qualifies as the top option available.

Elsewhere on New York’s O-line, Thomas is battling a strained hamstring. An MRI revealed the All-Pro left tackle avoided a serious setback, per Raanan, but it is possible he misses some time. Injured after the Giants’ botched field goal attempt that resulted in a Cowboys TD, Thomas did not practice Wednesday. This offseason, the Giants gave the 2020 first-rounder a five-year, $117.5MM deal that sits second among tackles.

Matt Peart, a 2020 third-round pick, sits as the Giants’ swing tackle, though Schwartz adds Ezeudu has taken LT reps in practice over the past two weeks. Ezeudu spent time at tackle while at North Carolina. Moving to left tackle after failing to win a starting guard job in his second training camp might make be a stretch. Peart has not made a start since 2021; the UConn alum has six career starts.

Latest On Giants’ Offensive Line

The Giants selecting John Michael Schmitz in Round 2, making the Minnesota product the first pure center drafted this year, points to four positions along their offensive line being solidified. Schmitz earning the starting snapper gig would mean he accompanies Andrew Thomas, Evan Neal and Mark Glowinski on New York’s O-line.

With Glowinski stationed at right guard, left guard would seem the unit’s only question. That is, if Brian Daboll‘s draft-weekend assessment of Schmitz’s instant-starter capabilities turns out to be accurate. But the Giants are sending veteran Ben Bredeson into two position competitions, per the New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy.

The 2021 trade acquisition is vying for both the left guard and center positions, with Dunleavy adding the ex-Raven should probably be considered the favorite at the LG spot. The Giants used a rotation at that position last season, platooning Bredeson and Nick Gates. Washington signed Gates in free agency, clearing a path for Bredeson to earn the job outright in a contract year. Bredeson is going against fellow contract-year blocker Shane Lemieux and 2022 third-round pick Joshua Ezeudu, per Dunleavy.

Lemieux held a starting job during the second half of the 2020 season, replacing Will Hernandez and taking over after the former starter recovered, but suffered a patellar tendon tear in September 2021. That career-stalling injury delayed Lemieux’s return until late November of last year, and the former fifth-round pick only suited up for one game last season. A toe injury added to Lemieux’s early-career health issues. Ezeudu, one of two ex-North Carolina guards the Giants drafted last year (along with fifth-rounder Marcus McKethan), played 290 offensive snaps as a rookie.

Pro Football Focus graded Glowinski, a longtime Colts starter, as a top-30 guard last season. It slotted Bredeson as the best of the rest, ranking him just outside the top 50. Bredson, a former fourth-round pick, has played guard more than center and should probably be considered a long shot to beat out Schmitz at the latter spot. With Bredeson, Lemieux, Ezeudu and McKethan rostered, along with ex-Steelers center J.C. Hassenauer and 2022 second-stringer Jack Anderson, the Giants will have some decisions to make when setting their final 53. McKethan did not play last year, suffering an ACL tear during the preseason.

None of these interior blockers is in the mix to be the team’s top tackle off the bench, with Matt Peart, Korey Cunningham and Tyre Phillips are battling for the swing gig behind Thomas and Neal. Phillips, claimed off waivers from the Ravens last year, made five starts in 2022 but worked behind the other two to start OTAs. Peart and Cunningham each have six career starts, though neither has seen much time since their respective rookie years. An outside addition to work behind Thomas and Neal should not be ruled out, per Dunleavy.

These O-line competitions will not heat up until training camp, obviously, as pads do not come on until August. Despite losing Gates and 2022 center starter Jon Feliciano in free agency, the Giants have a few options along their offensive front.
