Eagles Work Out WR Bruce Ellington

The Eagles made a transaction at wide receiver Sunday, waiving Shelton Gibson. They also spent part of the day working out free agent Bruce Ellington, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter).

A former 49ers, Texans and Lions wideout, Ellington spent several weeks with the Patriots in the spring. But the defending Super Bowl champions released him shortly after the draft. This marks Ellington’s first known workout for a team since.

Philadelphia remains deep at receiver, employing Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, DeSean Jackson and second-round pick J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. Former Ellington Houston teammate Braxton Miller resides on the Eagles’ roster, as do third-year wideout Mack Hollins and former Viking-turned-AAF standout Charles Johnson.

The Patriots signed Ellington in March, doing so after the slot player/return man spent 2018 with the Texans and Lions. Ellington’s most notable season came in 2017, when he posted 330 yards with the Texans.

Johnson, Goedert To Miss Rest Of Preseason

Eagles tackle Lane Johnson and tight end Dallas Goedert are expected to miss the rest of the preseason with injuries, Reuben Frank of NBC Sports writes

Johnson, the two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle, didn’t play in the Eagles’ preseason opener vs. the Titans but is listed with a knee injury on the team’s report. Frank adds that it isn’t a serious concern and if the season opener vs. the Redskins was this week, Johnson would likely be on the field.

Goedert, the second-year tight end, did participate in Thursday’s game against the Titans and logged three catches for 50 yards on just 12 snaps. During that run, however, he also suffered a calf injury. Like Johnson, though, Goedert isn’t expected to miss any time in the regular season.

Both players figure to feature prominently in 2019, as the Eagles enter the campaign as one of the favorites in the NFC to contend for a spot in Super Bowl LIV. Johnson has appeared in 15 games in each of the last two seasons, during which he emerged as one of the league’s top all-around linemen. Though he plays behind star Zach Ertz, Goedert impressed as a rookie in 2018, logging 33 catches for 334 yards and four touchdowns.

The Eagles suffered another injury on Thursday, when backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld broke a bone in his left wrist. He underwent surgery on Friday and is expected to be out for at least six weeks.

Eagles Trade OT Ryan Bates To Bills For DE Eli Harold

We’ve got a minor trade on our hands. The Eagles are sending offensive tackle Ryan Bates to the Bills for defensive end Eli Harold, the team announced on Twitter

Bates is a rookie undrafted free agent who grew up in Philly and played his college ball at Penn State. Unfortunately, he won’t be making a regular season homecoming. It’s rare for rookie undrafted free agents to get traded, but the Bills apparently see something they like in Bates. Heading into last season, many analysts saw him as a draftable player.

The Eagles have a pretty deep group of tackles, so Bates was unlikely to make the team anyway. In return for letting him go, the Eagles will now get to take a look at some possible pass-rushing depth. Harold was originally drafted in the third round by the 49ers back in 2015, and was traded to the Lions just before the start of last season.

After spending last year in Detroit, he signed a one-year pact with Buffalo earlier this offseason. He started 24 games for the 49ers between 2016 and 2017, and he had four sacks in a rotational role with the Lions last year. All told, he has nine career sacks in 61 games and 25 starts. It’s unlikely he’ll make too big of an impact for Philly, and he’ll be battling for a roster spot these next few weeks.

Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld Suffers Injury

Eagles backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld underwent surgery on Friday morning for a broken bone above his left wrist, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter) hears. The QB is expected to be out for six weeks, creative some uncertainty for the Eagles as they head into the season.

In light of Carson Wentz‘s own injury history, the No. 2 QB spot in Philly is an important one. Sudfeld was being counted upon as a quality safety net, but the club will be be forced to turn to the well-traveled Cody Kessler or potentially, undrafted rookie Clayton Thorson, if Sudfeld misses regular season games (then again, after Thorson’s awful performance last night in Sudfeld’s absence, he might not be long for the team.)

After signing his restricted free agent tender in April, Sudfeld is set to earn $3.095MM for the season. A 2016 sixth-round pick of the Redskins, the QB joined the Eagles via waiver claim in 2017. In two seasons with Philadelphia, the 25-year-old (26 in October) has appeared in four games, including playoff contests.

Sudfeld got an extended look during the 2017 regular season finale, completing 19 of his 23 pass attempts for 134 passing yards. Last season, however, he managed only two pass attempts.

Eagles LB Kamu Grugier-Hill To Miss Regular Season Time

The Eagles had terrible injury luck on defense last year, and it looks like those issues could be popping up again. They’ve been a bit banged up in the secondary, and now linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill has a Grade 3 MCL sprain, sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (Twitter link).

As Garafolo notes, Grugier-Hill is a projected starter for the team, so this is a big blow. Garafolo writes that Grugier-Hill will “likely miss some regular-season time but should be back relatively early” in the season. It sounds like it could’ve been worse, although the Eagles will probably have to go the first few games without him. The Eagles had high hopes for him in 2019, and Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94WIP tweets that he “was having an outstanding training camp.”

Grugier-Hill appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles last year, making ten starts. He finished with 45 tackles, a sack, an interception, and two passes defended. He was originally drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round back in 2016. He was waived by New England at final cuts, and claimed by the Eagles before the Pats could stash him on the practice squad.

He’s turned into a very nice find for Philly, and hopefully he can get back out there before too long. The Northern Illinois product is heading into the final year of his contract, so this is an especially pivotal year for him. Free agent signing Zach Brown will be even more important while Grugier-Hill is sidelined.
