Ravens Extend K Justin Tucker
The Ravens have enjoyed historic levels of success in the kicking game for the past decade, and will likely be able to do so for many years into the future. The team announced on Monday an agreement with Justin Tucker on a four-year extension.
One week ago, Chris Boswell signed an extension with the Steelers. At a rate of $5MM per season, that deal placed him into a tie with Tucker atop the list of the league’s highest-paid kickers. The latter’s new deal, as expected, has moved him back into the lead; ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that the deal includes $24MM in new money (for an AAV of $6MM), along with $17.5MM in guarantees and a signing bonus of $11.5MM.
The 32-year-old had two years remaining on his current deal, an extension signed in 2019. That contract was also four years in length, and carried a record-setting value of $5MM per season. Tucker was due $3.5MM in each of the next two years, but his scheduled cap hits were just under $6MM over that span.
After joining the team as a UDFA in 2012, the Texas alum won the starting job and has put together a decorated career since. A member of that year’s Super Bowl-wining team, he has been named a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro five times each, and was a member of the 2010s All-Decade Team.
Tucker remains the most accurate kicker in NFL history, with a career mark of over 91%. Last season, he added to his collection of all-time records with a 66-yard field goal against the Lions. His success (and, perhaps to an extent, recent developments in the kicking world) has spurred another lucrative new deal.
With Tucker now on the books through 2027, the Ravens have even more certainty with respect to the league’s most decorated player at his position. The team entered the day with less than $8MM in cap space, so this deal may create some added wiggle room. In any event, Tucker’s long-term future is secure.

Saffold landed on the NFI list after injuring his ribs in a car accident. Getting their starting left guard back sooner rather than later is an important development for the Bills.
Colburn will take the place of Cottrell in the Jags’ RB room. The Wake Forest product played in four games for the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars this year, garnering 102 rushes for 457 yards (just under 4.5 YPC) and eight scores.
Cottrell has seen action in each of the past two years for Jacksonville, returning seven kicks in 2020 and handling one carry in 2021.
Wolf and Parker get preseason roster positions after successful workouts yesterday. The Commanders are looking for depth at both positions as they work towards a 53-man roster.
Commanders To Sign LB Nate Gerry
Veteran linebacker Nate Gerry is headed back to the NFC East. The Commanders are signing him, per Mike Kaye of Pro Football Network (Twitter link). 
Gerry, 27, began his career with the Eagles in 2017. He played almost exclusively on special teams as a rookie during the team’s Super Bowl run that year, but took on a larger defensive role with each passing year. In 2019, he played a full season for the first tine, starting 12 contests and setting career highs in tackles (78) and sacks (2.5) along the way. He was a full-time starter the following season, but that campaign was cut short due to an ankle injury.
In free agency. the former fifth-rounder signed with the 49ers. By July, however, he was cut, and remained sidelined throughout the entire 2021 season. Kaye adds that he had not fully recovered from the injury until this offseason (Twitter link). Now, he will look to add starting-caliber depth to Washington’s LB corps.
The Commanders are led at the position by the likes of veterans Cole Holcomb and David Mayo, and 2021 first-rounder Jamin Davis. Gerry – who, as noted (on Twitter) by ESPN’s Field Yates, was among several players the team worked out yesterday – could prove to be a valuable find if he is able to regain his form of years past. He will, at a minimum, provide more experienced depth in the middle of the team’s defense than the likes of UDFA Tre Walker, who reversed his retirement decision yesterday.
Washington entered the day with more than $13MM in cap space, so this deal won’t prevent any other additions. Per Kaye’s colleague Aaron Wilson, the team is cutting offensive lineman Tyrese Robinson to make room for Gerry’s arrival (Twitter link).
Bills, FB Reggie Gilliam Agree To Extension
The Bills have signed FB Reggie Gilliam to a two-year extension worth up to $5.2MM, as Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network was first to report (via Twitter). The team subsequently announced the move.
A 2020 UDFA, Gilliam has seen most of his action on special teams, appearing in 504 third-unit snaps in his first two years in the league (as opposed to just 236 offensive snaps). However, he received high marks for his blocking prowess in his limited time on the offensive side of the ball, with Pro Football Focus assigning him a strong 76.3 grade for run-blocking and a stellar 84.7 pass-blocking grade in 2021.
Although he has lined up in the backfield and as a tight end, Gilliam hasn’t gotten many touches. In his career, he has five catches for 39 yards and a TD, to go along with three carries for three yards.
Still, the Bills clearly value his contributions. We do not yet know how much of the above-referenced $5.2MM payout is guaranteed, but as a former UDFA who plays a position that many NFL teams no longer utilize and who does not see nearly as much burn as better-compensated fullbacks like Kyle Juszczyk and Patrick Ricard, Gilliam appears to have done well for himself.
The soon-to-be 25-year-old was eligible for free agency at season’s end but is now under club control through 2024.
Chiefs Cut CB Deandre Baker
The Chiefs have cut cornerback Deandre Baker, as Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports (via Twitter). After Kansas City injected a great deal of new blood into its CB room this offseason, Baker found himself on the wrong side of the roster bubble.
A first-round pick of the Giants in 2019, Baker played in all 16 games in his rookie season, including 15 starts. He did not perform particularly well, yielding a 116.2 passer rating and earning a poor 48.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, but as a Day 1 selection, Baker was in line to get another extended look in 2020 for a rebuilding New York outfit.
However, Baker’s career quickly went off the rails. The Georgia product was alleged to have robbed a party at gunpoint in May 2020, and the Giants had already waived him by the time charges were dropped, thereby ending a sordid saga that included the attorney for three of Baker’s accusers being arrested on extortion charges. Shortly after he was criminally cleared, Baker hooked on with the Chiefs’ taxi squad and wound up appearing in two games (one start) for KC towards the end of the 2020 campaign.
The Chiefs were intrigued enough to retain Baker for the 2021 season, and he appeared in eight games (one start) for the club last year. His performance still left much to be desired, and while Kansas City kept him in the fold this offseason, the team also drafted three corners — including first-round choice Trent McDuffie — and traded for former Texans CB Lonnie Johnson Jr.
Having failed to impress during his limited time in Kansas City, Baker was squeezed out by the new acquisitions. The soon-to-be 25-year-old will surely get another opportunity, as teams are always on the lookout for CB depth (especially when that depth comes with a first-round pedigree). But he will need to start displaying skills commensurate with that pedigree in order to stay in the NFL for the long haul.

Weatherly was in line for a rotational role with the Browns this season behind entrenched starters Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney. The 28-year-old was coming off of a sack-less campaign with the Vikings last year, but has 73 games and 17 starts on his NFL resume. In his absence, the Browns will depend not only on another mostly healthy season for Clowney, but also third-round rookie Alex Wright and recent USFL signing Chris Odom in the edge rush department.
Just yesterday, Walker surprisingly ended his NFL career before it began, briefly becoming the second young Commander this offseason to hand up his cleats unexpectedly. Hours later, however, the UDFA changed his mind and asked to be reinstated. Having signed him to his rookie contract, Washington held the rights to the San Jose State alum and were free to bring him back into the fold. He will once again look to make the team’s roster – something he has a decent chance at, given the lack of proven options Washington has down the depth chart at ILB.
USFL WR Devin Gray Signs With Chiefs
Wide receiver Devin Gray will dip his toes into the NFL waters for the third time after signing a one-year deal with Kansas City, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The former Cincinnati Bearcat most recently played in the United States Football League and is the latest player from that league to sign an NFL contract.
Gray signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He spent three years on the team’s practice squad before finally being elevated to the active roster in the last regular season game of the 2020 season, still failing to find his way onto the field in that game. After participating in the short-lived The Spring League, Gray joined the Ravens for the summer of 2021, getting released from the practice squad early into the regular season. After failing to find another NFL job, Gray got selected in the USFL Draft and played eight games for the Philadelphia Stars, catching 25 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
Gray has some work ahead of him to make the Chiefs’ final 53-man roster. While Kansas City’s receiving corps isn’t exactly top-heavy, it has a decent amount of potential depth. The starting three are expected to be free agent addition JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, and another free agent signing in Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Behind them veteran Josh Gordon provides his skill set as long as he can stay on the field, second-round pick Skyy Moore will make the jump from Western Michigan to the NFL, and Justin Watson comes over after four unproductive years in Tampa Bay. Still behind them is former first-round pick Corey Coleman and a few other receivers who stood out in college like Daurice Fountain, Cornell Powell, and Gary Jennings.
That’s a lot of traffic for Gray to maneuver, and it will certainly be an uphill battle for the 27-year-old as he attempts to make an active NFL roster for only the second time in his career.
49ers To Sign WR Willie Snead
SATURDAY, 12:24pm: The 49ers have officially announced the signing.
FRIDAY, 4:07pm: Snead’s three-workout week will lead to a deal. The 49ers will add Snead to their 90-man roster, Wilson tweets. They will be his sixth NFL team. A former UDFA out of Ball State, Snead initially caught on with the Browns and Panthers before making a splash with the Saints. He has since played with the Ravens and Raiders before most recently circling back to the Panthers to close out the 2021 season.
3:26pm: Willie Snead is finishing up a busy week, one ending with a third workout. After auditioning for the Texans and Cardinals, the veteran wide receiver is in San Francisco for a 49ers tryout, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets.
Snead, who worked out for the Texans on Tuesday and Cardinals on Thursday, has generated some late interest despite not having much of a role with the Raiders or Panthers last season. The longtime slot target split time with Las Vegas and Carolina in 2021, catching four passes for 38 yards. After working out Snead, the Texans chose to sign Chester Rogers, who also participated in that audition.
Other than Marquise Brown, Snead is the wideout with the longest ties to the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson-run offense. Snead spent three seasons in Baltimore, signing a Ravens RFA offer sheet in 2018 and re-signing — on a one-year, $6MM extension — in 2019. After leaving Baltimore last year, Snead signed a one-year Raiders deal worth just $1.1MM. The Raiders cut him midway through the season, leading the former Drew Brees auxiliary target to the Panthers’ practice squad.
Snead, 29, is long removed from his best statistical seasons — his first two years with the Saints, who rostered the former UDFA from 2015-17 — but may soon have a chance to play an eighth NFL season. The 49ers have Jauan Jennings alongside top receiver investments Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and they also used a third-round pick on Danny Gray this offseason. The team signed ex-Steelers slot player/return man Ray-Ray McCloud and ex-Cowboy Malik Turner earlier this year.
The 49ers also worked out quarterback James Morgan, who has joined Snead in going through a busy travel schedule over the past several days. Morgan tried out for the Seahawks earlier this week, and the Green Bay native auditioned for the Packers recently as well. While Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the 49ers’ 90-man roster, he is not practicing with the team. Behind Trey Lance, the 49ers have Nate Sudfeld and 2022 Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy.
49ers Sign OT Jordan Mills
Jordan Mills has found a new home. The veteran offensive tackle has signed with the 49ers, reports Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com (on Twitter).
Mills has bounced around the NFL since his four-year stint with the Bills ended in 2018. He started two of his three games for the Cardinals in 2019 before suffering a knee injury that ultimately sidelined him for the rest of the season. The lineman spent most of the 2020 campaign on the Cowboys practice squad before catching on with the Saints last offseason. In total, Mills has seen time in 100 career games (87 starts), and he started a single playoff game for Buffalo in 2017.
The 31-year-old ended up getting into 10 games (three starts) for New Orleans in 2021. It wasn’t a great performance; while he didn’t play enough snaps to qualify for Pro Football Focus’ list, he would have ranked in the bottom-four among tackles with at least 200 offensive snaps.
Mills was recently in for a visit with the 49ers along with fellow linemen Tyree St. Louis and Caleb Benenoch. Jaylon Moore is currently sidelined with a lower leg strain, and he had mostly been serving as the primary swing tackle behind Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey. Mills will get some extra reps while Moore is out, and the veteran addition will likely be competing with the likes of Colton McKivitz and Justin Skule for a roster spot.
Bears, Browns Sign Two Former USFL Stars
Two star defenders from the 2022 United States Football League’s inaugural season signed NFL contracts today. DeMarquis Gates, considered one of the top linebackers in the USFL this spring, has signed with the Bears, according to Matt Lombardo of Heavy Sports. Edge rusher Chris Odom, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year for the USFL, signed today with the Browns, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network.
Gates has dipped his toe in the NFL before, spending offseason or practice squad time with Cleveland, Washington, and Minnesota. In between all of those stints and now, Gates played in the Alliance of American Football in 2019, the XFL in 2020, and the Canadian Football League in 2021, before dominating in the USFL this past spring. His persistence in sticking with professional football no matter the league could pay off with his newest NFL opportunity.
The Bears cupboard is fairly thin at linebacker behind Roquan Smith after losing Alec Ogletree to free agency and trading away Khalil Mack. Chicago responded to the losses by bringing former Raiders linebacker Nicholas Morrow and former Colts linebacker Matthew Adams. Neither have extensive full-time starting experience and Morrow, who has the greater amount of starting experience, didn’t play at all in 2021 due to a foot injury. If Gates can impress in the preseason, not only could he snag a roster spot, he could earn a key role on the Bears’ defense.
After earning the Defensive Player of the Year award for the USFL this spring, Odom has been auditioning all over the NFL, taking workouts with the Bengals, Cardinals, Chiefs, Saints, and Texans, before eventually acing the workout with the Browns. Odom has a bit more NFL experience, racking up 16 tackles in 11 games played. Odom spent offseason and practice squad time with the Falcons in 2017 and 2019, getting waived after both stints and finding his way to NFL action immediately after both times. In 2017, Odom signed with the Packers and got six tackles over seven games. In 2019, Odom signed with Washington and got 10 tackles and 2.0 sacks in just four games. In between those opportunities, Odom spent time in the AAF in 2018 and the CFL in 2021 before dominating USFL offenses. Odom, like Gates, is now being given an opportunity to be a golden example of what happens when you don’t give up on your NFL dreams.
Cleveland famously has two of the league’s better pass rushers in Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney. The two combined for over half of the Browns’ sacks last year with 25.0. The depth behind Garrett and Clowney is not ideal, though, with rookie third-round pick Alex Wright and former Vikings defensive end Stephen Weatherly as the primary backups on the depth chart. Odom has a real opportunity to find his way into the pass rushing rotation after leading the USFL with 12.5 sacks this past spring.
The USFL is striving to do what many other fledging leagues have attempted: cement their status as a minor league to the NFL. If top performers like Gates and Odom can find their way onto NFL rosters and into key roles, it could say a lot about the staying power of the USFL as a potential feeder-league.
