Texans Place Brandin Cooks On Reserve/COVID-19 List
On the cusp of his sixth 1,000-yard receiving season, Brandin Cooks may not be able to push for that again until next week. He landed on the Texans’ reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.
The Texans also placed kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn and linebacker Eric Wilson on their coronavirus list. This trio joins several others at present. Although the NFL relaxed protocols to allow for quicker returns for vaccinated players, this will still be a hurdle for Cooks and Co.
The thrice-traded wide receiver eclipsed 100 yards and scored two touchdowns in Houston’s win over Jacksonville last week. Cooks is now up to 947 yards this season. The eighth-year veteran would have two more chances to surpass 1,000 yards, in the event he is cleared before Week 17.
Cooks and Fairbairn are believed to be vaccinated, but David Culley said last week Wilson was not. The veteran defender will miss the team’s Week 16 game against the Chargers. Missing Sunday’s game would be another setback for Fairbairn, who began the season in Week 4 after an IR placement in September.

Washington Places RB J.D. McKissic On IR
The Washington Football Team placed back up running back J.D. McKissic on their IR this afternoon. This puts an end to a long healthy streak for McKissic who hasn’t missed extended time since 2018.
Antonio Gibson has performed as the bell cow this season with McKissic coming on to give him a breather every now and then. McKissic has carried the ball 48 times for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s shown his usual prowess as a receiving back catching 43 passes from the backfield for 397 yards and 2 touchdowns. The sixth-year veteran actually has more receiving yards and touchdowns over his career than rushing.
With McKissic out, the Football Team will have to lean on the rookie out of Buffalo, Jaret Patterson, and practice squad running back Jonathan Williams. Patterson has seen a bit of run in his first year carrying the ball 37 times for 135 yards, while Williams has only appeared in 2 games so far this year, including tonight’s contest against the Eagles.
Washington will be counting on the three backs as a win tonight would put Washington in the 7th seed spot for a contentious NFC.
Bucs Signing RB Le’Veon Bell
Running back Le’Veon Bell is back on an NFL roster, according to a tweet from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Bell is expected to sign a deal with the Buccaneers, pending a physical.
Bell appeared in five games for the Ravens this year after getting signed to the practice squad in early September. He joined Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman to create a trio of veteran running backs tasked with filling the void created by season-ending injuries to the team’s original 1-2 punch, J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. In limited time spelling Murray and Freeman, Bell carried the ball 31 times for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Bell is once again being asked to replace some production lost to injuries with Ronald Jones II banged up and Leonard Fournette likely joining Chris Godwin and Pat O’Connor as recent additions to the Injured Reserve list.
The move reunites a dynamic duo of days past from Pittsburgh as Tampa Bay is now home to Bell and former-Steeler Antonio Brown. The Killer B’s will certainly be satisfied replacing Ben with Brady.
Jaguars Place Carlos Hyde, Rayshawn Jenkins On IR
The Jaguars have placed running back Carlos Hyde and safety Rayshawn Jenkins on the injured reserve list. With just a few weeks left, that’ll cap the season for both players.
[RELATED: Brian Schottenheimer To Call Jaguars’ Plays]
Hyde has been out since Week 14, when he suffered a concussion against the Titans. His first Jaguars season will end with 253 yards off of 72 carries for a weak 3.5 yards per carry average. He also had one rushing TD plus a dozen catches for 65 yards. Of course, few players have shined in Jacksonville this season, so it’s hard to extrapolate much from those numbers.
Hyde remains under contract for 2022 thanks to his two-year, $6MM deal. However, his return is far from guaranteed. The Jaguars could move on from the 31-year-old (32 in September) to save $2MM against $450K in dead money.
The 2-12 Jaguars will face the Jets, Patriots, and Colts before wrapping their season. Currently, they’re projected to pick No. 1 overall (again), ahead of the Lions and Texans.

Browns’ Takk McKinley Done For Year
Takk McKinley‘s season is over. On Tuesday, doctors confirmed that the defensive end has in fact suffered a torn Achilles (Twitter link via Josina Anderson). McKinley will be placed on injured reserve this week, allowing the Browns to fill his spot on the 53-man roster.
McKinley, 26, had to be carted off after a non-contact injury in the third quarter of last night’s game. The Raiders went on to beat the Browns 16-14, dragging Cleveland’s playoff odds down even further. At 7-7, they now have a 15% chance of sneaking into the playoffs, per the stats at Five Thirty Eight. The Raiders, also stationed at 7-7 but with no hope of winning their division, have an 11% chance.
The timing is especially terrible for McKinley since he’s on track for free agency in the spring. The Browns had him on a one-year, $4.25MM deal with the potential to reach $6MM through incentives. Even with the usual dearth of quality pass rushers on the market, his next contract will likely be for less.
The Browns, without the former first-round pick, will travel to Green Bay to face the Packers on Christmas Day.
