Month: April 2014

Draft Updates: Quarterbacks, Mack, Tuitt

Here’s a handful of early-evening draft notes:

  • Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will visit the Titans later this month, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean (via Twitter).
  • The Browns will host a handful of quarterback prospects this week, including Blake Bortles (Central Florida, today), Derek Carr (Fresno State), Garoppolo, Tom Savage (Pittsburgh) and Keith Wenning (Ball State), according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (via Twitter), who says Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel will be in Cleveland later this month.
  • Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack, regarded as an elite defensive prospect, worked out for the Falcons today, per NFL.com’s Gil Brandt (via Twitter).
  • Notre Dame defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt worked out for the Rams on Tuesday, and is scheduled to work out for the Steelers and Patriots this week, according to Brandt (via Twitter).
  • The Bears, in desperate need of professional starting safeties, hosted Washington State’s Deone Bucannon, according to ESPNChicago.com’s Jeff Dickerson.
  • Several of the Rams’ 30 allotted pre-draft visits are taking place this week, according to ESPN.com’s Nick Wagoner, who mentions Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier, Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert, Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews and Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald in addition to those reported previously.

Saints Agree To Sign Marcus Ball

The Saints have agreed to terms on a three-year contract for former Toronto Argonauts safety Marcus Ball, the team announced today in a press release.

Ball, a Georgia native, began his college career at Florida State, spent a year in junior college and finished with two seasons at Memphis. He went undrafted in 2011 before migrating to Canada, where the 26-year-old totaled 142 tackles, four interceptions (two touchdowns) and seven sacks over two seasons.

Jeremy Stewart, Armon Binns Sign ERFA Tenders

A pair of exclusive rights free agents have signed their ERFA tenders and will return to their respective teams. The Raiders announced today that running back Jeremy Stewart has accepted his tender, while Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun tweets that wide receiver Armon Binns has done the same with his tender from the Dolphins.

After logging 25 carries and catching eight passes during a four-game stint with the Raiders in 2012, Stewart saw only 12 offensive snaps last season, though he did record his first career NFL touchdown and six special teams tackles. As for Binns, a torn ACL and MCL sidelined him for the 2013 season after he grabbed 24 balls in 2012 for the Bengals and Dolphins.

As exclusive rights free agents, neither Stewart nor Binns was permitted to negotiate with rival teams.

NFC Notes: Wharton, Rudolph, Lions, Bowman

Let’s check in on a few afternoon items from around the NFC….

  • The Panthers‘ offseason offensive line exodus may not be done yet. Veteran free agent guard Travelle Wharton suggests to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer (Twitter link) that he’s leaning toward retirement, though he hasn’t made a final decision yet. Over the last few weeks, Jordan Gross and Geoff Hangartner have also decided to retire, leaving the Panthers with some holes in their line.
  • We heard last month that locking up Kyle Rudolph long-term is a “big priority” for the Vikings, and it sounds like the tight end is fully on board with the idea too. “I want to stay here,” Rudolph told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (Twitter link). “Hopefully, [an extension] is something we can get done this offseason.”
  • With less than $2MM in cap space remaining even before today’s deal with Dan Orlovsky, the Lions may have to restructure multiple contracts in order to fill out their roster, writes Chris McCosky of the Detroit News.
  • According to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago (via Twitter), Zackary Bowman‘s new minimum-salary contract with the Giants includes a $65K signing bonus.

Dolphins To Sign Michael Rios

The Dolphins will sign former Marist wide receiver Michael Rios to a one-year contract, according to agent Sean Stellato, via Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports (Twitter link).

Rios, who went undrafted in 2013, signed with the Cardinals a year ago but didn’t earn a spot on the team’s regular-season roster. He’ll likely be given a chance to compete for a roster spot with the Dolphins this summer.

Texans Re-Sign Elbert Mack

The Texans have re-signed free agent cornerback Elbert Mack, tweets John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Mack, who joined the Texans for the 2013 season after spending the first five years of his NFL career with the Buccaneers and Saints, didn’t see any action on defense for Houston, but appeared in eight games as a special-teamer. Contributing to kick and punt coverage, the 27-year-old logged eight tackles.

Although Mack had a handful of defensive starts in Tampa Bay and New Orleans, he likely won’t see much action in the secondary for the Texans in 2014, barring injuries to regulars.

Prior to agreeing to terms with the Texans, Mack reportedly worked out for the Bengals last month.

Giants Sign Charles Brown

WEDNESDAY, 2:21pm: Brown’s contract with the Giants is a one-year, minimum-salary pact, tweets Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

TUESDAY, 3:14pm: The Giants’ active offseason continued today, as the team announced it has officially signed offensive lineman Charles Brown. We had heard nearly two weeks ago that the Giants would be hosting Brown on a free agent visit.

Brown, a former second-round pick, started 14 games for the Saints in 2013. Although he didn’t perform particularly well according to Pro Football Focus’ advance metrics (subscription required), whose grades ranked him 66th among 76 qualified tackles, he was a solid run blocker and protected Drew Brees‘ blind side at left tackle until he was benched late in the season.

Brown turns 27 next week, so there’s still room for him to develop into an above-average pro, though I expect he’ll start out in a reserve role in New York.

Draft Updates: Clowney, Bortles, Robinson

With no throws to make or brooms to evade, Jadeveon Clowney‘s Pro Day may not have had the fanfare of Johnny Manziel‘s event at Texas A&M, but plenty of coaches and executives showed up to watch Clowney at South Carolina today. Following his Pro Day, Clowney will make visits to work out for the Rams and Falcons, he confirmed today, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).

Here’s more on May’s draft and the 2014 class of prospects:

  • The Browns are conducting their private workout with Blake Bortles today, a source tells Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com (Twitter link).
  • Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson is visiting the Rams in St. Louis today, tweets Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.
  • Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net (Twitter link) hears from several sources that Clemson cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who had dinner with GM Trent Baalke following his Pro Day, is drawing “heavy interest” from the 49ers.
  • The Panthers worked out Wyoming defensive back Marqueston Huff today and will do the same for Wyoming wideout Robert Herron and quarterback Brett Smith on Thursday, says Gil Brandt of NFL.com (Twitter links).
  • According to Brandt (via Twitter), Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning has nine workouts lined up with nine NFL teams, including the Jaguars, Browns, and Patriots.
  • Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean (all Twitter links) passes along details on three prospects visiting the Titans: Auburn running back Tre Mason, who left Nashville today; West Virginia running back Charles Sims, who will visit later this week; and UCLA edge defender Anthony Barr, who will be in town next Tuesday.
  • The Bills hosted Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby, Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk, and Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier today, according to the team.

Redskins Sign DeSean Jackson

1:21pm: Ian Rapoport of NFL.com provides a breakdown of Jackson’s contract (via Twitter), reporting that it’s actually a four-year, $32MM deal that voids down to three years and $24MM. It includes a $5MM signing bonus and a 2014 cap number of $4.25MM. Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun adds, in a series of tweets, that the base salaries on the deal are actually fairly modest, with a significant portion of the money tied up in per-game roster bonuses in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

12:16pm: According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post (via Twitter), the cap hit on the deal for 2014 is expected to be in the neighborhood of $4MM, despite the fact that Jackson will make $8MM in ’14. We’ll have to wait for the full details, but I’d expect a signing bonus in the ballpark of $6MM. Jones adds that all the guaranteed money on the contract is in the first two seasons.

12:05pm: Less than a week after being released by the Eagles, DeSean Jackson is joining the Redskins. Jackson officially signed a three-year contract with Washington on Wednesday, according to the team (Twitter link). The three-year pact is said to be worth $24MM, with $16MM fully guaranteed, and $8MM owed in the first year.DeSean Jackson

Although those overall figures don’t look huge, the average annual value ($8MM) and overall guarantee ($16MM) are both slightly higher than what Eric Decker received from the Jets on what had been the largest receiver contract of 2014. Additionally, the fact that it’s only a three-year deal means Jackson will hit the open market again at age 30, at the latest.

It has been an interesting road for Jackson since rumors first surfaced early last month that the Eagles may be willing to trade their mercurial receiver. Jackson’s personality and occasional hotheadedness have been well-documented, and it was rumored that those attitudes ran counter to the type of culture that head coach Chip Kelly is trying to create in Philadelphia. That seemed to be just one of the reasons why the Eagles were willing to trade or release Jackson, who is a dynamic player on the field and who enjoyed the best season of his career in 2013, Kelly’s first year on the job. In 2013, the 27-year-old caught 82 passes for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns, all career highs.

When Jackson was officially released last week, rumors flew in earnest as to what teams would have the cap space, the culture, and the desire to bring him aboard. At one point, it appeared as though the Redskins, Bills, and Raiders were the most serious suitors, although we heard late Monday night that Jackson was expected to meet with the 49ers if he left Washington without a contract. Indeed, Bill Williamson of ESPN.com tweeted that the Niners made a late run at Jackson but ultimately did not have the money to sign him.

Bringing Jackson to Washington will add an explosive weapon to new head coach Jay Gruden‘s offense and will create a potentially dynamic 1-2 punch at receiver for the Redskins, who already have Pierre Garcon on the roster and signed Andre Roberts last month. Jackson will also remain in the NFC East, meaning his old club in Philadelphia will be tasked with trying to stop him twice in 2014 — and perhaps in future seasons as well, depending on how year one of the new relationship between Jackson and the Redskins goes.

The Redskins didn’t have the cap flexibility of other rumored suitors for Jackson, such as the Raiders or Jets. However, as we’ve seen with a number of deals signed over the last few weeks, like Jairus Byrd‘s pact with the Saints or Jared Allen‘s deal with the Bears, there are ways to structure lucrative contracts so that the first-year cap hit isn’t exorbitant.

Dianna Russini of NBC Washington and ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter first reported that an agreement was in place between Jackson and the Redskins, while Mike Jones of the Washington Post (via Twitter), Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter), Darren Heitner of Sports Agent Blog (via Twitter), and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (via Twitter) added details. Dolphins Sign Jason Fox

12:59pm: Fox’s deal is worth $795K, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald (via Twitter). That sounds to me like a minimum salary benefit contract, with $65K in bonus money.

12:22pm: The Dolphins have inked offensive tackle Jason Fox to a one-year contract, according to Pro Football Talk (via Twitter). Earlier today, we heard that the team was hosting Fox on a free agent visit.

As Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald suggested earlier today, the Dolphins are likely bringing Fox aboard to provide depth and potentially compete for playing time, rather than assuming he’ll be the answer at right tackle. Still, there’s some upside in the move. Fox is only 25 years old, and as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press tweets, the former fourth-rounder won the Lions’ right tackle job out of camp last season before his year was derailed due to injuries.

Fox is the latest free agent addition on the offensive line for a Dolphins team that has also locked up Branden Albert and Shelley Smith since free agency opened last month.
