Jets To Sign Patrick Onwuasor
The Jets have agreed to sign Patrick Onwuasor, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The former Ravens linebacker will reunite with C.J. Mosley with hopes of having better luck in New York/New Jersey.
Onwuasor played safety in college but found his footing at a ‘backer in Baltimore after going undrafted. He shined on special teams and saw his role increase with time. Stepping into Mosley’s role as the leader of the D, he had a so-so 2019 – Pro Football Focus ranked him as the No. 73 off-ball LB in the NFL. The Jets likely have plans to use him a bit differently and take advantage of his blitzing ability.
Onwuasor, 27, spent his entire four-year career with the Ravens up until now. Between 2017 and 2018, he started in 25 games for Baltimore.
The Ravens, meanwhile, are officially in the market for ILB help.
Buccaneers To Re-Sign Ndamukong Suh
The Buccaneers will bring Ndamukong Suh back for another season, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The defensive lineman is set to collect $8MM in 2020 on a deal that will allow him to stick with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. Suh can collect another $2MM via incentives based on playing time, Tampa Bay’s team defensive performance, and a playoff berth, reports Greg Auman of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Suh came to Tampa last year on a $9.25MM agreement – this is a bit of a hair cut for Suh, though he’s made tons of money throughout his career. The former First-Team All-Pro has started in every game he’s ever played – including all 16 last year – and he’s set to play a featured role on the Bucs’ D-Line once again.
Suh is past his prime, but he still garnered outside interest from clubs, including the Cowboys. Earlier today, Dallas picked up Dontari Poe, a deal that may have led him back into the waiting arms of the Bucs.
With Tom Brady on the other side of the ball, Suh might just have an opportunity to win a Super Bowl ring this year. The Bucs’ D closed out ’19 strong, so there’s reason to believe that they can be among the league’s better defenses.
Eagles To Sign Nickell Robey-Coleman
The Eagles’ have agreed to sign cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, as Josina Anderson of ESPN.com tweets. Robey-Coleman will join on a one-year deal (financial terms not yet disclosed).
The Rams declined Robey-Coleman’s option in March, allowing him to hit the open market. He’s found work in Philly, and he’ll join a revamped Eagles secondary that looks pretty darn good on paper.
New pickup Darius Slay will star as the team’s primary outside corner while Rasul Douglas, Sidney Jones, and Avonte Maddox are set to jockey for the CB2 spot. In the middle, safeties Jalen Mills and Rodney McLeod will be on patrol, with Robey-Coleman handling the slot. It remains to be seen whether his former Buffalo teammate, Ronald Darby, will be brought back for another year.
Robey-Coleman was set to count for a $4.5MM cap hit before the Rams turned him loose. Last year, he appeared in 16 games and played on 64% of their snaps. Before he joined LA in 2017, he spent the first four years of his career with the Bills and built a reputation as one of the league’s better slot men.
Cowboys To Sign Dontari Poe
Dontari Poe is coming to Dallas. On Wednesday, the Cowboys agreed to sign the defensive tackle, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Exact terms of the deal are not yet known and the two sides are still hashing out the fine print, but a (virtual) handshake agreement is in place. Poe figures to play a key role for the Cowboys, who are looking to remake their defensive line this offseason.
Poe, a 346-pound force, spent the last two seasons with the Panthers. This year, the club declined his option for the 2020 season, placing him on the free agent pile.
The Cowboys cast a wide net for defensive line help after losing Robert Quinn and Maliek Collins in free agency. Earlier this month, they landed fellow ex-Panthers notable Gerald McCoy, but they also did their homework on Ndamukong Suh, Damon Harrison, Mike Pennel, and others.
Poe made the Pro Bowl in 2013 and 2014 while he was with the Chiefs. Last year, he managed four sacks from the interior, despite being limited to just eleven regular season games. Historically, he’s been durable – before 2019, he never missed more than one contest in any campaign.
Contract Details: Falcons, Ryan, Eagles, Slay
Earlier this week, the Falcons restructured deals with Matt Ryan and others to carve out a bit of extra breathing room. Today, we got some additional details on that adjustment, via Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
Here’s the breakdown: Ryan’s base pay for 2020 will go down from $8MM to $1.05MM. Meanwhile, tackle Jake Matthews will see his base number trimmed from $10.55MM to $3.55MM. In both cases, the difference was converted to a signing bonus. In effect, it doesn’t change much for either player, but it does allow the Falcons to kick the can down the road and spend more this year.
Here are more deetz from around the NFL, with all links going to Twitter:
- Darius Slay, CB (Eagles): Three years, $50.05MM. $30.05MM fully guaranteed; $26.05MM guaranteed at signing (via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer)
- Calais Campbell, DL (Ravens): Two years, $25MM. $20MM guaranteed. $10MM signing bonus.
- Justin Ellis, DT (Ravens): One year, $1.047MM. $225K guaranteed. Deal counts for $910K, via the NFL’s veteran salary benefit provision (via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle).
- Brian Poole, CB (Jets): One year, $5MM. $4.5MM guaranteed. $3MM signing bonus. (via Wilson)
- Le’Raven Clark, OL (Colts): One year, $1.2MM. $300K fully guaranteed (via Joel A. Erickson of the Indy Star).
- Justin March-Lillard, LB (Cowboys): One year, $1.047MM. Veteran salary benefit (via Wilson).
Cowboys Won’t Sign Everson Griffen, Jadeveon Clowney
The Cowboys are in need of help on the edge after losing Robert Quinn in free agency. However, they’re unlikely to pursue two of the biggest names left: Everson Griffen and Jadeveon Clowney, according to Ed Werder of ESPN.com and Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star Telegram (Twitter links).
Griffen, we learned, won’t be back in Minnesota either. On Friday, his agent released a statement to share that the Vikings will not be re-signing him. On paper, he’d be a logical fit for the Cowboys – Griffen has a solid track record of generating pressure and he’s coming off of a strong comeback year. In 2019, the veteran notched eight sacks en route to his fourth career Pro Bowl nomination.
Clowney, meanwhile, is having trouble generating interest. Injuries are likely a factor, but the asking price is a bigger issue. At one point, we heard that the Seahawks free agent is seeking ~$20MM per season. Despite his pedigree as a former No. 1 overall pick and the ever-ballooning market for defensive ends, that’s probably an unrealistic ask.
The Cowboys – who still have multiple needs to address and limited room to fill them – appear poised to take a less splashy route as they look to replace Quinn.
Jets Re-Sign Neville Hewitt
Linebacker Neville Hewitt will return to the Jets, as ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter tweets. He’ll sign a new one-year, $2MM deal to suit up for Gang Green in 2020.
Hewitt, 27 in April, spent most of 2017 on the Dolphins’ practice squad, but was promoted for the last six games of the regular season. He played only eleven snaps, but saw 66.5% playtime on special teams.
In 2018, he got a career break with the Jets. Over the last two years, he’s suited up in 16 games for them. There’s been a lot of turnover at the Meadowlands, but the new regime seems to like him as much as the old one.
Everson Griffen Won’t Re-Sign With Vikings
Everson Griffen and the Vikings are going their separate ways. On Friday, agent Brian Murphy released the following statement (Twitter link via Tom Pelissero of NFL.com).
“We have broken off talks with Minnesota because they have to spend their money elsewhere and we decided to now focus our attention on free agency,” said Murphy.
There has been mutual interest between the two sides, but the price tag proved to be prohibitive. One league source estimated that the 32-year-old is in line for a deal worth $8MM-$10MM, plus incentives.
His last deal – a four-year, $58MM extension signed in 2017 – was cut short when Griffen triggered his option to escape. But, had he stayed, there was no guarantee that the Vikings would have kept him. Given their current stance, it seems likely that he would have been released.
The former fourth-rounder has spent his entire career with the Vikings, earning four Pro Bowl nods in ten seasons. This past season, Griffen finished with 41 tackles, eight sacks, and an interception. Since 2011, he’s put up at least 5.5 sacks in every campaign.
Broncos To Sign Melvin Gordon
The Broncos have agreed to sign running back Melvin Gordon, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter). The former Bolts standout will receive a two-year deal worth $16MM, with $13.5MM of that sum being guaranteed.
Gordon made headlines for his prolonged holdout with the Chargers. When he finally returned to the field, he delivered mixed results.
In 12 games, Gordon averaged 3.8 yards per carry, a far cry from the 5.1 yards per tote that gave him so much leverage in 2018. The two-time Pro Bowler made a name for himself as a touchdown machine, but he didn’t find paydirt all that often – he had eight rushing TDs and one receiving TD, a big dropoff from the previous year’s total of 14 total scores.
There were bright spots, however, giving the Broncos and other teams plenty of reason to still believe in his ability. In Week 9, for example, he torched the Raiders for 108 yards. He also gave the Broncos an up-close look at what he can do in Week 12 – he came one yard shy of the century mark in Denver.
Last year, Phillip Lindsay became the first UDFA in league history to open his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. While he fights for a pay day of his own, the Broncos will add one of the league’s most notable tailbacks.
