Jaguars Release P Brad Nortman
The Jaguars announced that they have released punter Brad Nortman. The move indicates that the Jaguars expect seventh-round pick Logan Cooke to handle punting duties in 2018.
Nortman, 29 in September, spent the first four years of his career with the Panthers before signing a free agent deal with the Jaguars in 2016. His contract was set to run through 2019, but Jacksonville has opted to bail in order to save $2.1MM+ in cap room. However, they will be left on the hook for $250K in dead money.
Nortman averaged 45.3 yards per kick for the Jaguars over the last two years, though his average dropped slightly in 2017. Overall, the move appears to be less about Nortman’s ability and more about saving money as the Jags believe they have found a comparable talent at a cheaper rate in Cooke.
Jaguars Bid To Buy London Stadium
Jaguars owner Shad Khan has entered a bid of nearly $700MM to purchase London’s Wembley Stadium, according to the Evening Standard. In a statement, Khan confirmed his efforts to purchase the historic soccer venue while reaffirming his commitment to the city of Jacksonville.
“Today’s news changes none of what we envision for the long-term promise for the Jaguars here in Jax, and it changes nothing as to the goals we have for your downtown,” Khan said. ” If anything, today’s news is the embodiment of the ethos we adopted several years ago of being proud, bold and committed.”
The Jaguars have a deal in place to play at Wembley stadium through the 2020 season and today’s news will only increase speculation that Khan is eyeing a move to England. Many view London as a high-potential untapped market that could draw major dollars for an NFL franchise and the Jaguars have build a following there by playing multiple games on the other side of the pond. Still, Khan insists that the plan to purchase Wembley Stadium is not the first step towards relocation.
“If my ownership interests were to include Wembley Stadium, it would protect the Jaguars’ position in London at a time when other NFL teams are understandably becoming more interested in this great city,” Khan said. “And the stronger the Jaguars are in London, the more stable and promising the Jaguars’ future will be in Jacksonville.”
The timing of the leak is curious and one can’t help but wonder if Khan purposely wanted the news to be buried under the frenzy of tonight’s NFL Draft. But, taken at face value, the acquisition will not impact the Jaguars’ future in Jacksonville.

Jags Undecided On Dante Fowler's Option
The Jaguars would have an interesting setup for Lamar Jackson, employing a recently extended starting quarterback but a long-scrutinized player whose long-term future with the team remains in doubt. Tom Coughlin said Friday the Louisville prospect was an “outstanding young man” and an “extremely talented athlete.” But Dave Caldwell said the team that pulls the trigger on Jackson would have to be ready to adjust its offense to accommodate the dual-threat talent.
- Caldwell did not give an indication on which way he was leaning with regards to picking up Dante Fowler‘s fifth-year option. The Jacksonville GM said the team had not made a decision. Earlier today, Fowler’s price became clear. It will cost the Jaguars a massive sum ($14.2MM) to keep Fowler on their books for 2019 on his rookie contract.
WR Tyler Gaffney Returns To Baseball
You won’t be seeing Tyler Gaffney on the pages of Pro Football Rumors, but you may find him on MLB Trade Rumors in time. The former Panthers, Patriots, and Jaguars wide receiver is going back to baseball, as MLB.com’s Adam Berry writes.
“My dream has been the big leagues my whole life,” Gaffney said. “I think I’ve been tasting that every time I was hurt. You have time to think about things like that. So now I’m here, putting in my work. Now I’m here, five years later. I think the last couple years took their toll on my body. The heart wanted it. The body didn’t. I’m finally able to come back to baseball, the sport I love.”
Gaffney was drafted by the Pirates in 2012 and played in their minor league system for a summer before returning to Stanford to play football. He is now returning to the Pirates to pursue his MLB dreams, starting with the Bradenton Pirates of the Florida State League.
Gaffney held promise as a sixth-round pick with the Panthers, but injuries prevented him from doing much on the field. Although he never recorded an official statistic, he does own two Super Bowl rings thanks to his time with the Pats.
QB Luke McCown Retires From NFL
Longtime NFL quarterback Luke McCown is calling it quits. On Friday, the 36-year-old announced his retirement from football.
“Today I am officially retiring from the NFL,” McCown wrote. “It’s bittersweet to leave the game I love and the craft I’ve worked at since the second grade.”
McCown first entered the league as a fourth-round pick of the Browns in 2004. He started in four games as a rookie for Cleveland before a draft weekend deal shipped him to Tampa Bay. He did not see the field for the Bucs until 2007, when he made three starts for the team. Between ’07 and ’15, McCown started only three more contests.
Even though he didn’t see much playing time over the years, McCown earned enough on contracts with the Browns, Bucs, Jaguars, Saints, Falcons, and Cowboys to retire comfortably. We wish the QB and former Verizon spokesperson the best in the next chapter of his life.
Browns, Jags Not Interested In Dez Bryant
The Jaguars are unlikely to pursue Dez Bryant, according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Times-Union (on Twitter). Same goes for the Browns, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com hears.
The Browns seem pretty well set at wide receiver with high-priced acquisition Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon leading the way. Beyond those two, they also have former first-round pick Corey Coleman, athletic ex-Packer Jeff Janis, and others in the mix. Presumably, Bryant is looking for a situation where he would rank no lower than second on a team’s WR depth chart.
The Jaguars would have made a bit more sense for Bryant after losing Allen Robinson to free agency. Still, they have Marqise Lee, Donte Moncrief, and Dede Westbrook leading the way. It’s also likely that top exec Tom Coughlin does not see Bryant as a personality fit for his locker room.
While the Jags and Browns are not in on Bryant, other teams are expected to show interest. Late last week, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter identified the Cardinals, Bills, and Packers as potential fits. The Ravens also reportedly have interest.
NFL Draft Rumors: Broncos, Jones, Jaguars
The Broncos hosted USC running back Ronald Jones on a pre-draft visit on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Jones, a likely first or second round pick, is coming off of a Monday visit with the Redskins.
It’s very unlikely that Jones is in play at No. 5 overall, but the Broncos also hold the eighth pick in the second round (No. 40 overall), so Jones could be a consideration there.
Here’s the latest round of NFL Draft news:
- South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert visited with the Jaguars, Alex Marvez of The Sporting News tweets. All in all, Goedert says he has worked out for or visited with “15 to 20 teams.”
- Pittsburgh tackle Brian O’Neill met with the 49ers, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area tweets. As a former tight end, O’Neill has tremendous athleticism for the left tackle position.
- NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb says that he he does not have a visit lined up with the Browns and the same goes for Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, Albert Breer of The MMQB tweets. However, that doesn’t mean that either player is out of consideration for Cleveland. The Browns are apparently comfortable with the medicals and character of both players.
- The Patriots are hosting Alabama linebacker Rashaan Evans now that his White House trip is over, Rapoport tweets.
Oklahoma TE Mark Andrews Could Be Jags' First-Round Target
- Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union thinks the Jaguars need another TE who can threaten the middle of the field to take attention off their outside receivers, and he believes Oklahoma’s Mark Andrews would be a good fit for Jacksonville’s No. 29 overall selection.
Jaguars Worked Out RG3
The Ravens signed Robert Griffin III to a one-year deal this week, but not before he drew interest elsewhere. The Jaguars auditioned the quarterback on Monday, according to Mike Florio of PFT.
The Jaguars did not offer Griffin a contract, according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Times-Union (on Twitter). But, the Jaguars’ level of interest in Griffin was enough to push the Ravens to get a deal done with him now, rather than after the draft.
All in all, it’s a low-risk proposition for Baltimore as they gave RG3 a one-year deal worth $1MM with a modest signing bonus. If Griffin flops, the Ravens can cut bait with little fiscal penalty. If he looks solid in camp, the Ravens can move forward with him as their No. 2 QB behind Joe Flacco, replacing free agent Ryan Mallett.
In his younger days with the Redskins, Griffin was among the most dynamic talents in the NFL. Since then, health issues have held him back. He later found his way to the Browns, but injuries limited him to just five games in an uninspiring 2016 campaign. Last year, Griffin was out of the game altogether. Few expect Griffin to recapture the glory of his 2012 season, but he could be a value signing if he play up to a league average backup.
The Jaguars, meanwhile, have just two QBs on the roster in Blake Bortles and the newly-acquired Cody Kessler. It’s likely that Jacksonville will explore signal callers in this month’s draft and also continue to scour the free agent market for veteran options to fill out the QB depth chart.
