Grant Delpit Expects To Be 100% By Training Camp

The Browns have devoted considerable resources to their secondary this offseason. They gave John Johnson top-10 safety money, added ex-Johnson Rams teammate Troy Hill and then spent their first-round pick on cornerback Greg Newsome. But the team has multiple high picks returning from injury.

Neither Greedy Williams nor Grant Delpit played a down last season, with injuries sidelining the LSU alums. Delpit has yet to debut for the Browns, having suffered a torn Achilles’ tendon last summer. But the 2020 second-round pick expects to be 100% by training camp, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer notes.

While Delpit acknowledged he is still battling some pain from the injury, he indicated his rehab endpoint is near. The Browns, like 28 other teams this year, open training camp July 27.

I’ve done a lot to come back in rehab and just do all of that right now. I’m doing sprints, cutting and all of that,” Delpit said, via Cabot. “Just on the backend of my rehab now and just trying to get rid of that annoying pain. It’s coming along, and I should be ready by training camp.”

This is a positive development for the former first-round hopeful. Delpit’s timeline appeared foggier in April, when he indicated he was a few months away from full clearance. One of the top players from LSU’s unbeaten national champion team, Delpit suffered the injury in late August last year. These injuries can prove troublesome, even post-rehab, but the recovery timetable generally ranges from nine to 12 months.

Set to return all 11 offensive starters, the Browns will have several new defensive cogs. Delpit will count toward this, despite not being a new addition. The returns of he and Williams will give the team considerable depth and help a defense that ranked 25th in DVOA last season. Cleveland lost a few role players here, with Kevin Johnson, Terrance Mitchell and Andrew Sendejo no longer on the roster. The 2019 Thorpe Award winner joins Johnson and Ronnie Harrison as Cleveland’s top safeties. Harrison’s presence figures to allow the Browns to build up Delpit after the injury.

Latest On Browns S Grant Delpit

The Browns snagged LSU safety Grant Delpit with the No. 44 overall pick of last year’s draft, which looked to be something of a steal considering Delpit’s upside. Unfortunately, the winner of the 2019 Jim Thorpe Award suffered a torn Achilles during the first week of training camp last August, thereby ending his rookie season before it could even begin.

To help fill the void, Cleveland traded for young Jaguars safety Ronnie Harrison, and it had signed Andrew Sendejo before the Delpit injury. Sendejo, however, was one of the worst safeties in the league in 2020 according to Pro Football Focus’ advanced metrics, and he remains a free agent. The Browns did sign former Ram John Johnson in free agency last month, and between him, Harrison — who was PFF’s ninth-best safety — and Delpit, Cleveland will have a young and talented safety corps for defensive coordinator Joe Woods to work with.

But it will still be a while before Delpit can return to the field. The 22-year-old tells Anthony Poisal of the team’s official website that he is a few months away from full medical clearance. “I’ve put so many hours in the weight room,” he said. “That’s just part of life when you’re playing in the league. I’m doing everything I can to get on the field.”

As Poisal writes, Delpit’s recovery timeline should allow him to be ready for the start of training camp. It’s hard to speculate on what his role might be until he gets a couple of weeks of work under him, but his coverage abilities and physicality suggest that he will be a major factor on a team that has made a number of additions to the defensive side of the ball this offseason and that is looking to build on its most successful season since it rejoined the NFL in 1999.

Browns’ Grant Delpit Done For Year

Grant Delpit has suffered a season-ending Achilles tear (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com). The Browns will place the safety on IR, ending the rookie’s season before it could even begin.

Delpit was widely viewed as a first-round prospected heading into his junior year at LSU. Then, his stock slipped a bit, allowing the Browns to scoop him up at No. 44 overall. He was expected to be a pillar of the Browns’ young secondary this year, alongside Denzel Ward and former Tigers teammate Greedy Williams. Instead, they’ll have to wait until next year to see what he can do.

Fortunately, the Browns have backup. New addition Andrew Sendejo figures to step into the starting free safety job and join Karl Joseph in deep coverage. Sendejo, a longtime starter for the Vikings, has been first-string for 61 of his career games. Still, he’s entering his age-33 season, and he doesn’t offer the same kind of tantalizing upside as Delpit.

This is just the latest training camp injury for the Browns, following linebacker Mack Wilson‘s knee injury and cornerback Kevin Johnson‘s lacerated liver. On the plus side, Johnson was released from the hospital rather quickly, which could allow for a relatively quick return to action.

Browns Fear S Grant Delpit Tore Achilles

One of the Browns’ top offseason additions may not suit up this season. The Browns are concerned that rookie safety Grant Delpit suffered an Achilles tear, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

The LSU product needed to be carted off the practice field Monday, and the team confirmed he is being evaluated for an Achilles tear. Delpit will undergo an MRI Monday night, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

The Browns used the No. 44 overall pick on Delpit, who was long expected to be a first-round pick. He, Denzel Ward and ex-LSU teammate Greedy Williams represent the three young pillars of Cleveland’s secondary. Delpit was productive throughout his three-year college career. He registered 199 tackles (17.5 for loss) and seven sacks and was on track to be an instant contributor as a pro.

Were Delpit to have torn one of his Achilles’ tendons, the Browns’ offseason addition of Andrew Sendejo will be pivotal. While Cleveland signed Karl Joseph, Sendejo would be in line to ascend from top backup to a starting role. The former Vikings starter has operated in that capacity often in his 10-year career, starting 61 games. He was a full-time starter alongside Harrison Smith from 2015-17, and the Vikes featured top-six scoring defenses in each campaign. The 2020 season will be Sendejo’s age-33 slate, however.

Browns Sign Round 2 S Grant Delpit

The Browns wrapped up their draft class signings Wednesday, coming to terms with second-round pick Grant Delpit on his four-year deal.

Selected 44th overall, Delpit will be expected to compete for a starting safety job with the Browns. Cleveland allowed Damarious Randall to defect to the Raiders but brought in ex-Raider first-rounder Karl Joseph on a one-year deal. Delpit, however, becomes the team’s top long-term safety investment.

Viewed by most as a first-round pick going into his junior season at LSU, Delpit demonstrated the ability to lock down defenders in both man and zone coverage. While his stock slipped a bit, allowing Cleveland to take him with its second-round pick, Delpit was productive throughout a three-year career. He registered 199 tackles (17.5 for loss) and seven sacks.

The Browns attempted to install Jabrill Peppers as a long-term cornerstone of their defense, but the team traded the 2017 first-round pick to the Giants in the Odell Beckham Jr. deal. Delpit represents the team’s latest effort to bring a high-ceiling talent into the fold at the position.

As training camp approaches, here is another look at the Browns’ 2020 draft class:

1-10: Jedrick Wills, T (Alabama): Signed
2-44: Grant Delpit, S (LSU): Signed
3-88: Jordan Elliott, DL (Missouri): Signed
3-97: Jacob Phillips, LB (LSU): Signed
4-115: Harrison Bryant, TE (Florida Atlantic): Signed
5-160: Nick Harris, C (Washington): Signed
6-187: Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR (Michigan): Signed

Browns Take LSU S Grant Delpit At No. 44

Grant Delpit is off the board. With the No. 44 pick, the Browns grabbed the standout LSU safety.

The Browns fortified safety by signing Karl Joseph and Andrew Sendejo, but they also wanted to address the group in the long run. Joseph and Sendejo are both on one-year deals and, at this stage of his career, Sendejo profiles more as a supporting cast member.

Delpit notched five tackles and one sack in LSU’s championship victory. All in all, he closed out three seasons with a combined 199 tackles, 17.5 sacks, seven interceptions, 24 passes defended, and two fumble recoveries.

Delpit has demonstrated the ability to lock down defenders in both man and zone coverage. He’s also an effective blitzer, as evidenced by those 17.5 sacks. He’ll have to tighten up his tackling form at the next level, but evaluators say his future is bright.

LSU’s Grant Delpit Enters Draft

Soon after Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins announced his draft decision, he was joined by his championship game opponent. LSU safety Grant Delpit will forgo his remaining eligibility to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

We are champs. We hoisted the trophy for you and LSU fans everywhere,” Delpit wrote. “I’ve decided to move on to the NFL. I will carry the joy and excitement of this season with me forever.”
