Eagles Host WRs Jameson Williams, George Pickens

With wide receiver being touted as one of the Eagles’ top needs in the upcoming draft, it comes as no surprise that the team is hosting some of the position’s top prospects. In a pair of tweets, Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94WIP reports that the Eagles are meeting with Jameson Williams today, having already done so with George Pickens.

Williams played one season at Alabama, having transferred there from Ohio State. 2021 was the only year in which he put up significant numbers, but his performance rightly earned him first-round consideration. In 15 games, he made 79 catches for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. Those totals place him among the best receivers in school history in terms of single-season statistics, a list which also includes 2021 Eagles first-rounder DeVonta Smith.

The biggest concern surrounding the true junior, of course, is his health. Williams tore his ACL in the National Championship Game. As a result, his stock has taken a hit, but he is still expected to hear his name called on the first night of the draft. His combination and size and speed would compliment Smith in the Eagles’ receiving corps.

There is much less certainty regarding Pickens’ expected draft position. He had a productive freshman year with Georgia, posting 727 yards and eight touchdowns. He only managed to play in 12 games since then, however, having missed most of the 2021 season due to a torn ACL. His size and production (when on the field) still likely places him within the top-10 wideouts in this year’s class, though, meaning he could be taken in the second round.

After last week’s trade with the Saints, Philadelphia currently owns picks No. 15 and 18, both of which could put them in Williams’ range. Their second-round selection (51st overall) might also allow them to take Pickens if they turn their attention to other positions on Day 1. Ultimately, the Eagles will have a number of options if they wish to upgrade their pass-catching corps for 2022.

NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Arkansas WR Treylon Burks

Treylon Burks has spent his entire life living in Arkansas. The kid is Arkansas born and raised. After only three years of play at the University of Arkansas, NFL teams are dying to give Burks his first home outside of The Natural State. 

Burks left Warren High School as the top-ranked player in the state, despite missing most of his senior season due to a torn ACL. The multi-sport athlete signed to continue his education in-state and made an immediate impact. As a true freshman, Burks gave the Razorbacks 475 yards receiving. Although, Burks is a big-body receiver (measured at 6’2″ and 225 lb. this weekend in Indianapolis), the freshman was so explosive in the open field that his coaches gave him kick- and punt-returner duties. Burks took the opportunity and ran with it, being named 2nd Team All-Sec as a return specialist his freshman year.

In the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Burks broke out in a big way, racking up 820 yards and 7 touchdowns in only 8 games. With all eyes on him and expectations sky-high for the 2021 college season, Burks soared. Despite constant double-teams as the only perceived receiving threat for the Razorbacks, Burks still managed to catch 66 balls for 1,104 yards and 11 touchdowns. He even managed to add on 112 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown to the ledger.

As a pro, Burks screams No. 1 receiver material. He has the physical, big body to dominate in jump ball scenarios along with run-after-catch ability to be a threat outside the red-zone, as well. He tracks and adjusts to the ball well in the air and his catch radius will give his future quarterback a bit of leeway to just throw the ball in his general direction. His versatility from college with returns and some rushing attempts have appropriately earned him multiple comparisons to a big-bodied Deebo Samuel.

In The Athletic’s Dane Brugler’s prospect position rankings from December, Burks was listed as the third best receiver behind Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson and Alabama’s Jameson Williams. Many mock drafts see Burks as the second or third wide receiver generally taken off the board behind Wilson and USC’s Drake London. Burks is nearly a consensus first round pick, with many evaluators predicting him to gone by the second half of the first round.

Regardless of when he gets picked up, the lack of any NFL teams in Arkansas guarantees that Burks will soon be heading for a new destination. Whichever team gives him a call on draft night is going to receive an NFL-ready, Day 1 starter ready to compete with NFL corners. Look for teams who currently lack a true No. 1 receiver to pull the trigger somewhere in the middle of the first round, if not earlier.

Alamaba WR Jameson Williams Declares For Draft

Jameson Williams is going pro. The junior wide receiver made the announcement on his Instagram account early this afternoon, joining Evan Neal as the second Crimson Tide underclassman so far to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Williams leaves the ranks of college football having lost two consecutive national championship games: one as a Buckeye in the 2020 season and one as a member of the Crimson Tide this year. Williams initially signed with Ohio State in 2019 but was starved for targets behind fellow first-round hopefuls Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson.

The change of scenery was a smart move for Williams as he went on the have the second-best receiving season for an Alabama receiver since Amari Cooper, behind only Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith. Williams finished fifth in the nation with 1,572 receiving yards and tied for third in the nation with 15 receiving touchdowns. Williams has length and speed to dominate at the next level.

There is a bit of a hurdle for Williams as he tore his ACL in the Tide’s National Championship Game versus Georgia. The injury rang a familiar unpleasant tone with Alabama fans as they saw a similarly timed injury sideline their number-two receiver John Metchie III in the team’s SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

Williams was projected as an extremely high draft pick before the injury. While the potential threat of having to sit out his entire rookie season won’t do anything to help the 20-year old’s draft stock, whichever team takes a chance on Williams will have a do-it-all receiver who can win the jump balls, go deep, and return kicks. We shouldn’t be waiting too long to hear his name.

Alabama WR Jameson Williams Suffered Torn ACL

One of the top projected wideouts in the 2022 draft will likely be sidelined for his entire rookie season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) that Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams tore his ACL during last night’s championship game.

While the injury will surely delay Williams’ NFL career, there is some good news. Doctors believe that the receiver should make a full recovery, and he should return to his sub 4.3-second speed, per Schefter. Alabama’s receivers corps took a hit earlier this season when John Metchie III tore his ACL in early December.

Williams spent two years buried on Ohio State’s depth chart, but he had a breakout campaign with Alabama in 2021. The receiver finished the season with 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. The prospect also returned 10 kicks for 352 yards and two touchdowns. The performance earned Williams a first-team All-American nod and first-team All-SEC honors.

The 6-foot-2, 189-receiver didn’t only rank as one of the top receiver prospects in the draft…he was one of the top overall prospects, period. In their recent rankings of the top draft prospects, ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both had Williams among their top-15 players, with Kiper ranking the Alabama product behind USC’s Drake London and McShay having Williams behind London, Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson, and Penn State’s Jahan Dotson. Meanwhile, Pro Football Focus’ Michael Renner had Williams going 13th to the Browns in his recent mock draft.
