Travis Harvey

Minor NFL Transactions: 9/22/15

As usual, plenty of teams around the NFL are shaking up their rosters a little on the Tuesday following a full slate of games. Here are today’s minor moves:

  • Cowboys defensive tackle Terrell McClain is done for the season with a badly sprained big toe, reports Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Twitter link). Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram adds (via Twitter) that the team has placed McClain on injured reserve.
  • The Cardinals have cut running back Kerwynn Williams in order to make room for offensive tackle Bobby Massie, who is returning from a two-game suspension, says Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com (Twitter link). We’ll see if Arizona re-adds Williams or another running back to the roster before the club’s Week 3 game, with Andre Ellington likely to be sidelined again. The Cardinals also cut Travis Harvey from injured reserve with an injury settlement, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post tweets.
  • With Jay Cutler injured, the Bears activated quarterback David Fales from the taxi squad to the active roster, as Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. To make room, the Bears waived Bryce Callahan, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com tweets.
  • Washington linebacker Martrell Spaight, a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, has been placed on injured reserve due to a concussion, tweets Tarik El-Bashir of CSNMidAtlantic.com. The move opens up a roster spot for reinstated cornerback Chris Culliver.
  • Besides Massie, Culliver, and Vikings cornerback Jabari Price, whose reinstatement we noted yesterday, Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell and Chargers offensive lineman Craig Watts are returning from suspensions this week, per Wilson (Twitter link). Pittsburgh and San Diego will have roster exemptions until tomorrow afternoon for those players.
  • The Colts have made a change at the cornerback spot, signing veteran free agent Josh Thomas and waiving Eric Patterson, owner Jim Irsay announced today (via Twitter). Perhaps more notably, the team an injury settlement with running back Vick Ballard, officially removing him from the roster. Ballard, who hasn’t played a game since the 2013 season, will become a free agent if and when he clears waivers.
  • The Dolphins are signing linebacker and special-teamer Terrell Manning, according to Wilson. The 25-year-old has already appeared in regular season games for five different NFL teams since entering the league in 2012.
  • With Austin Seferian-Jenkins set to miss some games, the Buccaneers are signing tight end Cameron Brate off the Saints‘ practice squad, tweets Adam Caplan of ESPN.com. Brate started the season on Tampa Bay’s taxi squad before he landed on New Orleans’ unit last week.
  • The Buccaneers have also have also signed free agent defensive end Josh Martin and waived defensive end Kourtnei Brown, Roy Cummings of The Tampa Tribune tweets.
  • The Ravens waived running back Terrence Magee to open up spot for newly-acquired cornerback Will Davis, as Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun tweets.
  • The Raiders cut Tevin McDonald, Wilson tweets.

Cardinals Cut Dave Zastudil, 10 Others

The Cardinals have released veteran punter Dave Zastudil, the team announced today in a press release. A groin injury sidelined Zastudil in October last season, and he was replaced by Drew Butler, who has beat him out for the team’s punting job this year.

In addition to parting ways with Zastudil, the Cardinals also removed 10 more players from their roster today, getting down to 76 players. The club will have to make one more move within the next 24 hours or so, in order to reduce their roster count to 75.

Here are the other 10 Cardinals who were let go, besides Zastudil:

  • Lorenzo Alexander, LB
  • Glenn Carson, ILB
  • Travis Harvey, WR (wavied/injured)
  • Nate Isles, G
  • Edwin Jackson, ILB
  • Andrae Kirk, ILB
  • Shaquille Richardson, S
  • Gannon Sinclair, TE
  • Ryan Spadola, WR
  • Darren Woodard, S

Cardinals Re-Sign Lyle Sendlein

2:55pm: The Cardinals have officially re-signed Sendlein, per Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com (via Twitter). The team also signed guard Nate Isles and wide receiver Travis Harvey, cutting quaterback Chandler Harnish in a corresponding move.

8:46am: The Cardinals are bringing in veteran center Lyle Sendlein for a physical today, and if everything goes according to plan, he’ll re-sign with the team, reports Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910 in Arizona (Twitter links). According to Jurecki, the Cards don’t appear content with their current centers, so Sendlein figures to get a chance to compete for the starting job if and when his signing becomes official.

Sendlein, 31, has been the Cardinals’ starting center for most of the last center, appearing in 121 regular season games (109 starts) for the team since 2007. The veteran offensive lineman started all 16 games at the position for Arizona in each of the last two seasons. However, he was released by the club in March after grading as the NFL’s second-worst center out of 41 qualified players in 2014, according to Pro Football Focus’ data (subscription required).

Shortly after the Cards cut Sendlein, head coach Bruce Arians indicated the team wouldn’t mind bringing him back at a reduced cap figure. The longtime Arizona center had been set to earn a $3MM base salary in 2015 before he was released, so when he re-signs, it figures to be for something closer to the minimum salary.

With Sendlein out of the picture for the past few months, the Cardinals have been leaning on A.Q. Shipley and Ted Larsen at center. However, it seems as if the team isn’t comfortable, at least for now, heading into the regular season with one of those two players as its starter. Either Shipley or Larsen could still ultimately win the job, but they’ll get some additional competition from the veteran Sendlein.

Cards Sign 10 Players To Futures Contracts

Following their first round playoff loss to the Panthers, the Cardinals are moving forward by locking up several players for 2015. The team announced today that it has signed 10 players to futures contracts, including nine members of their practice squad. The new additions are as follows:

  1. Zach Bauman, RB
  2. Ted Bolser, TE
  3. John Fullington, G
  4. Travis Harvey, WR
  5. Jimmy Legree, CB
  6. Kelvin Palmer, T
  7. Tavon Rooks, T
  8. Ryan Spadola, WR
  9. Ross Weaver, CB
  10. Darren Woodard, CB

Bolser confirmed today (via Twitter) that he rejoined the Cardinals’ practice squad at season’s end before inking his futures deal, which makes Rooks the only player on the list that didn’t finish the season on the team’s taxi squad. Arizona also signed three other players – tackle Cameron Bradfield, guard Antoine McClain, and cornerback Roc Carmichael – to reserve contracts last week.

Cardinals Sign Chris Clemons; Ellington To IR

The Cardinals have officially ended the season of starting running back Andre Ellington, placing him on the injured reserve list due to hernia surgery, tweets Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. Using the newly-opened roster spot, the team signed veteran free agent safety Chris Clemons.

Clemons signed a two-year deal with Houston in the offseason that contained $450K in guaranteed money, but was cut by the Texans at the end of the preseason. Despite auditions with the Bills, Bengals, Falcons, and Lions since then, the 29-year-old didn’t find a new home until now. Clemons had spent the first five seasons of his career with the Dolphins, starting 48 games, racking up 207 tackles and four interceptions. Pro Football Focus (subscription required) graded Clemons as the 19th-best safety in the league last season.

As for Ellington, he’ll return to the Cardinals in 2015, and it will be interesting to see how his role in the offense is affected by his performance this season. After being deployed a change-of-place back in his rookie season, Ellington was leaned on heavily as the club’s feature back this year, and saw his yards per carry average dip from 5.5 to 3.3. In his absence, Kerwynn Williams and Stepfan Taylor figure to carry the bulk of the load out of the backfield.

In addition to signing Clemons and placing Ellington on IR, the Cardinals also added a couple players to their practice squad, signing wide receiver Travis Harvey and guard John Fullington to the unit, according to Urban. By our count, the Cards previously had nine players on their taxi squad, so we’ll have to wait for word on which player is being removed or signing elsewhere.

Here are Friday’s minor transactions from around the NFL, including practice squad moves and small changes to the backs of 53-man rosters:

To make room for the returning lineman, the Cowboys waived linebacker Korey Toomer, who had been on the 53-man roster for the entire season, but was inactive for several games.

  • Wide receiver Lee Doss has been cut from the Browns‘ practice squad, according to Wilson (via Twitter).

Most notably, wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan and cornerback Walter Thurmond have been placed on season-ending injured reserve, according to the club. East Notes: Dolphins, Pats, Giants, Redskins

While most teams around the NFL have set their 53-man rosters and 10-man practice squads for the season, we shouldn’t expect those clubs to just sit on their hands going forward. Many clubs have been auditioning players this week for potential spots on the active roster or practice squad, including several teams from the NFL’s two East divisions. Via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, who passes along the latest updates in a series of tweets, here are the latest items out of the AFC and NFC East:
