Duke Johnson To Enter Draft

SATURDAY, 5:52pm: Johnson’s mother, Cassandra Mitchell, has informed Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post that her son will indeed be entering the 2015 draft.

THURSDAY, 11:58am: One of the top running back prospects will likely be trying his luck in the NFL, as Yahoo’s Rand Getlin tweets that Miami back Duke Johnson is expected to announce that he’s entering the NFL draft. One source tells Getlin that they’d be “shocked if he stays in school” for his senior year.

ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. recently ranked Johnson as the fifth-best running back prospect in the upcoming draft, and WalterFootball.com projected the junior to be taken between the first and third round. Meanwhile, Rob Rang of CBSSports.com compared Johnson to Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, specifically pointing out the similarities between the players’ jump-cuts and acceleration. However, Rang believes Johnson lacks the size to be a premier back, suggesting he might succeed in a two-back system.

The former ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year is Miami’s all-time leader in all-purpose yardage. He had his most productive season in 2014, rushing for 1,520 yards and ten scores, while also compiling 33 catches for 370 yards.

Todd Gurley To Declare For NFL Draft

University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley will declare for the 2015 NFL Draft, reports Seth Emerson of the Macon Telegraph (via Twitter). Gurley’s college coach Mark Richt confirmed that his Heisman-caliber tailback would be “moving on.”

The move from college to the NFL is not surprising, considering Gurley would have expected to be the first running back taken before suffering an ACL injury midseason. Gurley, who had been suspended by the NCAA for improprieties stemming from a paid autograph signing, was reinstated before hurting his knee in his first game back..

In three seasons at Georgia, Gurley separated himself as an elite running back prospect. He average 6.0, 6.2, and 7.4 yards per carry in his three abbreviated years as a Bulldog, scoring 36 touchdowns during that time.

Although running backs are becoming less important in terms of draft position, especially as Trent Richardson continues to struggle, Gurley would have been close to a lock as a first-round pick had he remained suspended and never suffered an injury that ended his college career.

Extra Points: Haslett, Rams, Lions, Draft

Let’s take a look at some notes from around the league on this Christmas evening…

  • Washington defensive coordinator Jim Haslett certainly has an uncertain future, but the coach told ESPN.com’s John Keim that he’s only focused on the holiday season. “Whatever happens, happens,” Haslett said.
  • This upcoming offseason will be key for the Rams, writes Joan Niesen of SI.com. According to the writer, the organization’s claim that they’re one year away from contention is getting “stale,” but the team showed flashes of dominance this season. Solidifying an inconsistent offense would be key for the team’s turnaround, opines Niesen.
  • Lions left guard Rob Sims has been a consistent presence on the Lions’ offensive line, and Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press writes that the upcoming free agent has been “making a late-season contract-year push.” “I think early in the season I was trying to overcome some stuff and dealing with some stuff and I got over it,” Sims said. “I was struggling a little bit, but I would never use that as an excuse. I’ll take my lick. I think I returned to form shortly after that, after the first Minnesota game…I feel like I’ve returned to form, so I think that’s me.”
  • The State’s Josh Kendall tweets that South Carolina running back Mike Davis will be entering the NFL Draft. The junior rushed for 927 yards and nine touchdowns this past season.
  • Yahoo’s Rand Getlin tweets that MSU defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun could be entering the upcoming draft. The player’s mother has been meeting with a variety of agents, and Getlin says the player is considering leaving school. However, Getlin also tweets that some believe Calhoun will ultimately stick around for his senior season.

NFC Links: Bradford, Crabtree, Foster

A variety of factors will go into the offseason decision-making for the Rams, but with the defense clicking on all cylinders and the team playing themselves out of a high draft pick, the team’s best course of action may be to retain Sam Bradford, writes Joan Niesen of Sports Illustrated.

It would take too much for the Rams to trade for a quarterback or move up in the draft, and hoping for a healthy and consistent season from Bradford could be the best move for them if they hope to compete in the NFC West next season.

Here are some other links from around the NFC:

  • The 49ers will have to make a decision on whether or not to keep Michael Crabtree with the team going forward, and the former first-round pick is excited to reach this offseason, writes Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com“I can’t wait to see what’s next, the next chapter in my career,” said Crabtree. “I’m going to go hard every day. I’m going to go hard every year, try to get better. Try to maximize my talent.”
  • Buccaneers‘ linebacker Mason Foster is also set to hit free agency, but is looking forward to remaining with the team in 2015 and beyond, writes Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com“I definitely want to stay in Tampa,’’ Foster said. “Both my sons were born in Tampa. I’ve got a lot of ties down here, and I love Tampa. It would be great. It would be amazing to stay here. But football is a business so you know there’s a chance you won’t be here.’’
  • The Lions will be without center Dominic Raiola this weekend against the Packers with the lineman suspended for the game, but the team is confident in backup Travis Swanson, writes Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com. Raiola surely would love Swanson to play well as the Lions beat the Packers to win the division, but as an impending free agent, his leverage would be much better were Swanson to struggle to replace him.
  • The Eagles are slated to be selecting around 20th in the 2015 NFL draft, and Jared Sherman of CSNPhilly.com has already taken a look at what players they could consider selecting in his first mock draft. Sherman has the team targeting a cornerback, going with Marcus Peters out of Washington. The way the Eagles have been burned by Dez Bryant and DeSean Jackson the past two weeks, it is no surprise Sherman sees corner as the team’s top priority.

Extra Points: Marrone, Grossman, Draft

If the Bills‘ new owners, Terry Pegula and Kim Pegula, have decided to retain head coach Doug Marrone beyond this season, they haven’t told Marrone yet, writes Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. However, as Marrone told reporters today, he’s not worried about receiving assurances about his job.

“Now is really not the time for that in our profession,” Marrone said. “Maybe some other people would do that. I’m probably not the best person to talk to because I’m wired a little bit differently. Like I said, my focus is just on this game and winning. I don’t want to focus on the other stuff. The things that you can’t control, you don’t worry about. Those things will happen, I’m sure, when the season is over.”

Let’s check in on a few more Tuesday items from around the NFL….

  • Browns head coach Mike Pettine confirmed today to reporters, including Jeff Schudel of The News-Herald (via Twitter), that Cleveland tried to sign quarterback Rex Grossman before reaching out to Tyler Thigpen. Grossman reportedly declined because he wanted to spent the holidays with his family instead.
  • Boise State running back Jay Ajayi announced this week that he’ll forgo his senior season and enter the 2015 NFL draft, says Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman, who notes that Ajayi made the decision earlier this month. Ajayi, who racked up 1,689 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns in his junior year, currently ranks as the 10th-best back in this year’s class, per Mel Kiper of ESPN.com.
  • Utah offensive tackle Jeremiah Poutasi is expected to enter the 2015 draft early, sources tell Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net (Twitter link). Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com tweeted earlier this year that Poutasi is “pretty raw,” but is an intriguing prospect with a good deal of upside.
  • Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune explains why it wasn’t a practical solution for the Bears to use the franchise tag on Jay Cutler a year ago.
  • While Tony Sparano deserves praise for the job he’s done as the Raiders‘ interim coach, the club needs to “aim higher” when selecting its next coach, in the view of Marcus Thompson II of the Bay Area News Group.

Jaelen Strong To Enter Draft

Arizona State announced today that wide receiver Jaelen Strong will forgo his final year of college eligibility and enter the NFL draft, as Kyle Bonagura of ESPN.com writes. At present, Strong looks like a possible first-round talent.

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report (via Twitter) sees Strong as a late first-round choice. Recently, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. told Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic the receiver is a second-round selection who could sneak into the first if he runs well at NFL workouts.

The big question will be separation speed, quickness out of your break, explosiveness out of your break,” Kiper said. “Pro Day’s going to be very important for Jaelen Strong, there’s no question about that.”

Strong hauled in 75 passes for 1,062 yards and ten touchdowns in his 2014 regular season, drawing attention from pro scouts everywhere. Strong first came to ASU as a JUCO transfer two years ago and even though made a big impact in his first season, he blossomed into a more polished athlete this year. While he believes that he has a bright NFL future ahead of him, he made it clear that leaving ASU early was not an easy decision for him.

First, I would like to thank Coach [Todd] Graham and the staff for believing in me from day one. I’d like to thank the Sun Devil Nation, the fans, and all of the people who work behind the scenes that I encounter every day that have been like a family to me,” Strong said in a statement. “Most importantly, I would like to thank my teammates, my brothers, for having my back through thick and thin. Finally, I’d like to thank Jean Boyd and his academic staff for their dedication to Sun Devil football.”

Extra Points: L.A., 49ers, Draft, Daniels

The Chargers recently confirmed that they’ll continue to play in San Diego for the 2015 season, and it sounds as if the Rams could be the next team to make a similar announcement. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune (Twitter link) and Albert Breer of the NFL Network both indicate that officials in Missouri are expected to present the franchise with a plan containing “substantial public funding” soon, which will make it difficult for the club to justify leaving for Los Angeles in the short term. While there have been plenty of whispers about the possibility of one or two teams making the move to L.A., the smart money says it probably won’t happen in 2015, according to Breer.

Let’s round up a handful of other items from around the NFL….

  • The 49ers have already begun the process of researching potential head coaching candidates from other organizations, writes Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (via Twitter). Cole writes that this is further proof that the organization will move on from Jim Harbaugh this offseason.
  • Georgia outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins announced (via Twitter) that he’ll return to school for another season. Meanwhile, Alabama safety Landon Collins is viewed as a lock to enter the draft, sources tell Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports (Twitter link).
  • As NFL executive Troy Vincent points out (via Twitter), the requests for early evaluation from NCAA underclassmen dipped from 214 last year to just 147 this year. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggests that perhaps this means the number of early entrants will decline by a similar rate this year, but as Rand Getlin and Dan Wentzel of Yahoo! Sports write, the NFL instituted new limits this year on the information the league will provide potential early entrants. Only five underclassmen per college program can receive info, and the league will only tell those players if they’re first- or second-round picks.
  • Seahawks backup quarterback B.J. Daniels had his salary increased from the practice squad rate up to an active roster rate, reports Brian McIntyre of NFL.com (via Twitter).
  • The Patriots had three defenders – defensive end Cam Henderson, defensive lineman Antonio Johnson, and edge defender Rufus Johnson – in for tryouts this week, tweets Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.
  • Washington is staring at the possibility of a second consecutive three-win season, and the team hasn’t even shown signs of trending upward, according to John Keim in his mailbag for ESPN. With issues between the coach and quarterback, Washington is having a season to forget.

  • Oregon defensive lineman DeForest Buckner is leaning toward staying in school, multiple sources tell Getlin. Buckner is a highly rated prospect who figured to hear his name called early in the spring. Getlin hears from one source (via Twitter) that it’s 80/20 towards staying at Oregon.
