Jets, LB B.J. Goodson Agree To Deal

B.J. Goodson is returning to New York. The veteran linebacker agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Jets on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

This contract will be worth up to $2.1MM and bring the former Giants fourth-round pick and multiyear starter back to the Big Apple. Goodson worked out for the Jets on Tuesday. Interestingly, the Jets also auditioned former big-ticket free agency addition Avery Williamson, whom they traded to the Steelers at last year’s deadline.

Goodson, 28, has 43 career starts; 14 of those came for the Browns last season. The former Giants and Packers cog established a key role in Cleveland, with which he made a career-high 91 tackles and intercepted two passes to help snap a 17-season playoff drought. Pro Football Focus graded Goodson as an upper-echelon coverage linebacker in 2020. The Titans met with Goodson in April. Otherwise, he enjoyed a quiet free agency stay.

The Jets are down Jarrad Davis with an injury that required an IR stay, and C.J. Mosley has rarely seen the field during his two-plus-year Jets tenure. While Mosley returned to action to start this season, Jet linebackers Jamien Sherwood and Blake Cashman are dealing with injuries.

Williamson, 29, was not connected to a team in the offseason. The previous Jets regime signed the ex-Titan standout to a three-year, $22.5MM deal in 2018. Williamson, however, missed all of 2019 due to injury and finished last season in Pittsburgh. He started four games with the Steelers, who were then without Devin Bush. Williamson led the 2018 Jets with 120 tackles, contributing three sacks as well.

Saints To Sign C Austin Reiter

After working out Austin Reiter on Tuesday, the Saints reached an agreement to add the veteran center, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. Reiter will join a Saints team that lost starter Erik McCoy to a calf strain in Week 1.

The Saints are expected to sign Reiter to their practice squad and elevate him to their active roster before Sunday’s Week 2 game, per Pelissero. Reiter has been in free agency since March, though the former Super Bowl starter has been linked to multiple teams — the Bengals, Giants and Texans — this year.

Following McCoy’s injury, New Orleans shifted Cesar Ruiz from guard to center and summoned rookie UDFA Calvin Throckmorton to the starting lineup at guard in his first NFL game. Reiter will give the Saints considerable experience as a possible bench option or as a starting center. Such an arrangement would allow Ruiz to stay at guard, though the Michigan product did enter the 2020 draft with considerable center experience. Ruiz served as the Wolverines’ starting center from 2018-19.

Reiter, 29, served as Kansas City’s starting center over the past two seasons. The Chiefs, however, made wholesale changes on their offensive front this year. They replaced Reiter (and everyone else from their 2020 starting O-line) with second-round pick Creed Humphrey, while also adding ex-Rams starter Austin Blythe in free agency.

Jets To Sign P Thomas Morstead

The Saints ended Thomas Morstead‘s lengthy tenure as their punter this offseason, but the 12-year veteran landed another gig. The Jets are signing Morstead, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. Morstead worked out for the Jets on Tuesday.

An injury to punter Braden Mann forced the Jets to use rookie kicker Matt Ammendola as an emergency punter Sunday against the Panthers. Mann is expected to miss at least a month with a knee sprain. The Jets placed their primary punter on IR Tuesday.

Morstead began his New Orleans tenure ahead of the team’s Super Bowl-winning 2009 season. He signed multiple extensions to stay in that role, but the Saints were more than $100MM over the cap this year. That forced them to bid farewell to several key cogs from the Drew Brees era, Morstead among them.

Since joining the Saints, Morstead missed only two games in 12 seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in 2012. Having lost Mann early in his second NFL season, the Jets will turn to the 36-year-old specialist for the time being.

Raiders G Denzelle Good Tears ACL

The Raiders came out of their nationally televised opener 1-0 but are down at least one key player for the season. Denzelle Good suffered a torn ACL, according to ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler (on Twitter).

Good spent most of last season as a starting guard for the Raiders, and the team used the veteran blocker as a starter Monday. Good was set to start opposite Richie Incognito, having won Las Vegas’ right guard gig. Incognito missed Monday’s game due to injury, thrusting second-year guard John Simpson into the starting lineup opposite Good. It would appear Simpson will stick in that role.

Good, 30, went down on the Raiders’ first drive. They moved recent addition Jermaine Eluemunor into the lineup opposite Simpson. The Raiders re-signed Good this offseason, giving him a two-year commitment at $4.18MM on average.

A former Colts draftee, Good hovered as a depth option between the 2016 and ’20 seasons. After spending the ’16 season as a primary Indianapolis starter, Good served as a backup in Indy and Oakland. However, the Raiders kept blocker around since claiming him off waivers late in the 2018 season. They were forced to use him as a regular following Incognito’s September 2020 injury. They will now hope Incognito can return from his latest injury soon.

Jon Gruden expressed concern Good, Yannick Ngakoue, Marcus Mariota and Gerald McCoy suffered serious injuries. It is not known if that is the case for the latter trio, though Good’s prognosis provides an ominous sign here. McCoy was carted off the field Monday night.

Broncos Place CB Ronald Darby On IR

Teams inquired about Denver’s cornerback depth leading up to the season, but the Broncos will need to use it early. Denver is placing Ronald Darby on IR due to a hamstring injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

The free agent acquisition will miss at least three games and possibly more. Denver signed Darby to a three-year deal this offseason, one in which the franchise also added veteran Kyle Fuller on a one-year contract and used its No. 9 overall pick on Patrick Surtain II. The latter will be counted on as a potential every-down player beginning in Week 2.

This marks the latest injury setback for Darby, who carries a checkered health history. The veteran starter played 16 games last season, setting him up for a better free agency bid, but missed 20 games over the previous three years. Of Denver’s top four corners, only Darby and Surtain are signed beyond 2021.

Barring other injuries to its cornerback corps, the Broncos have the depth to withstand this setback and continue their momentum. The team returns Bryce Callahan from last season as well. However, Callahan has an extensive injury history — one that includes a full-season absence in 2019 and an IR stay to close the 2020 slate. He will team with Fuller and Surtain as the Broncos’ top three corners beginning Sunday, however. Second-year corner Michael Ojemudia is also on IR with a hamstring injury.

Additionally, the Broncos placed Jerry Jeudy on IR and promoted wide receiver Kendall Hinton and cornerback Nate Hairston from their practice squad. Jeudy suffered a high ankle sprain Sunday and will be out for several weeks.

Ravens Place OL Tyre Phillips On IR

The Ravens finished Monday night’s overtime loss without Tyre Phillips, and they will be without their starting left guard going forward. Baltimore placed Phillips on IR Tuesday.

A knee injury led to Phillips being carted off Monday, and he will join some high-profile teammates on IR. The Ravens are already down J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Rashod Bateman on offense. It remains to be seen if Phillips’ injury will allow him to make a return in his second season.

A third-round pick out of Mississippi State last year, Phillips started eight games for the Ravens as a rookie. The 331-pound blocker won the team’s left guard job to start this season, playing opposite free agent acquisition Kevin Zeitler. Ben Powers replaced Phillips in the Ravens’ lineup Monday, but the team also has third-round rookie Ben Cleveland on its active roster. The Ravens traded guard Ben Bredeson to the Giants just before the season.

Additionally, the Ravens waived Trenton Cannon on Tuesday. The team brought in the ex-Jets and Panthers special-teamer and used him as a ball-carrier Monday night. Cannon received two carries, playing behind Ty’Son Williams and Latavius Murray. The Ravens, however, have higher-profile backs Le’Veon Bell and Devonta Freeman on their practice squad.

Colts Sign S Andrew Sendejo, Cut CB Chris Wilcox

After getting torched on several deep balls by Russell Wilson on Sunday, the Colts worked out a group of safeties on Monday. They apparently liked what they saw from Andrew Sendejo.

Indianapolis is signing the veteran, the team announced. In a corresponding roster move, they’ve cut cornerback Chris Wilcox. Wilcox was a seventh-round pick of the Buccaneers, 251st overall, in this past draft. Let go by Tampa at final cuts he was claimed off waivers by the Colts, but lasted just a week on the active roster.

Sendejo on the other hand is a seasoned vet with plenty of starting experience. An UDFA out of Rice back in 2010, Sendejo found a home with the Vikings toward the end of the 2011 season. He then was with Minnesota until the end of the 2018 season, and was a full-time starter for a handful of years.

After a brief stint in Philly he was cut midway through 2019, and latched back on with the Vikings to close the year. He signed with the Browns last offseason, and started all 14 games that he played in with Cleveland in 2020. Sendejo worked out for the 49ers last month, but didn’t draw too much other known interest. He turned 34 last week.

Raheem Mostert Out For The Year, 49ers Signing Kerryon Johnson To PS

Unfortunate news for 49ers fans. It appears running back Raheem Mostert won’t be returning in a couple of months after all. Instead, Mostert will have surgery on his knee that will sideline him for the rest of the season, he announced himself on Twitter.

In a responsive move, the 49ers will be signing free agent running back Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Johnson, a 2018 second-round pick of the Lions, was cut by the Eagles last month. He also visited with the Raiders last week, and is still only 24. Johnson operated as the Lions’ lead back for his first two years in the league, but took a backseat to D’Andre Swift last year and was soon jettisoned.

Mostert says that he weighed his options and ultimately determined this was the best course of action. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had said yesterday that Mostert would only undergo a scope for chipped knee cartilage, and that he would return in about eight weeks. He’ll instead have cartilage repair surgery that will have a six-month recovery, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network tweets. That should at least give him plenty of time to be 100 percent for the start of 2022.

It looks like the backfield will now be Elijah Mitchell‘s to lead going forward. Mitchell got 19 carries in the 49ers’ win over the Lions after Mostert went down, turning them into 104 yards and a touchdown. Fourth-round rookie Trey Sermon, who was a healthy scratch in Week 1, could get a crack at some point as well.

It’s a tough blow for Mostert, who has been an extremely effective runner when healthy but has struggled to stay on the field. He’s averaged a ridiculous 5.7 yards per carry on 284 career attempts, but injuries limited him to eight games last year and held him back in prior years as well. It’s especially tough considering Mostert is in a contract year, and will be an unrestricted free agent this spring.

It’ll be very interesting to see what kind of contract he lands in free agency. On the one hand he’s been remarkably efficient the past few years, but on the other hand has been plagued by injuries and has played in Shanahan’s system, in which virtually every running back seemingly thrives.

Panthers Cut K Ryan Santoso, Sign K Zane Gonzalez

The Panthers have made their decision. Carolina is cutting kicker Ryan Santoso after just one game, a source told Joe Person of The Athletic (Twitter link). The team then announced they would be signing kicker Zane Gonzalez off the Lions’ practice squad to replace him.

It was a move that was time sensitive because of the Panthers’ trade for Santoso a few weeks ago. Carolina agreed to acquire Santoso from the Giants, and the deal stipulated that they’d send a seventh-round pick to New York if Santoso was on the active roster for two games. Essentially, they had a one week free trial on the kicker, and decided he wasn’t worth the late-round pick.

Santoso made both of his field goal attempts in the team’s Week 1 win over the Jets, but he did miss one of his two extra point attempts. The Panthers cut Joey Slye at final cuts, and they also have Dominik Eberle on the practice squad. Gonzalez was the Browns’ kicker in all 16 games in 2017, and he spent most of the past two seasons as the Cardinals’ full-time kicker. Because he was signed off another team’s practice squad, Carolina will need to keep him on the active roster for at least three weeks.

The Giants will now get nothing in return for the man they had behind Graham Gano during the preseason. Teams apparently thought highly enough of Santoso, who has spent some time in the CFL, to warrant a trade for him, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he gets another shot with somebody soon.
