Hue Jackson Would Like To Name Starting QB By Preseason Opener
- Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer says Browns head coach Hue Jackson would like to name a starting QB prior to the August 10 preseason opener, but that he may need to see some live action first, especially now that rookie DeShone Kizer has narrowed the gap between himself and Cody Kessler.
Offset Language Holding Up Jabrill Peppers Contract?
Jabrill Peppers is one of only 11 2017 draft choices who has yet to sign his rookie deal, and offset language is likely to blame for the contractual holdup with the Browns, as Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com writes. Offset language, as a reminder, can allow a player to “double dip” if he’s waived by his original club, as it enables him to collect a salary from a new team without that total being offset. Neither of Cleveland’s other two first-round picks — defensive end Myles Garrett and tight end David Njoku — were able to remove offset language from their deals, so the Browns are likely attempting to maintain precedent with Peppers.
DeShone Kizer Gaining Ground
- Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer is gaining ground on Cody Kessler in the Browns‘ quarterback competition, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com writes. “We already have some capable guys here in Brock and Cody, and we want to see if (Kizer) can compete with those guys,” coach Hue Jackson said last week. “Obviously, there are some things he does really well, and there are some things where he’s still a young quarterback. He’s still learning, but he’s emerging. I do believe that. We’ll see how this all unfolds.” Of course, Brock Osweiler is also in the mix for the No. 1 QB job and the early word on him has also been positive.
- Former Browns and Steelers cornerback Justin Gilbert has been suspended for one year by the NFL.
Corey Coleman Not Charged In Assault
Browns wideout Corey Coleman was not charged in relation to a December assault that occurred at his apartment building, but Coleman’s brother and another man were indicated, as Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. However, the incident remains under investigation, so it’s unclear if Coleman could be charged at some point in the future.
“Corey has cooperated with the authorities,” Coleman’s attorney Kevin Spellacy tells Ulrich. “He continues to cooperate with the authorities. And he’s maintained he was not involved in a physical altercation at that incident whatsoever. Whether that be encouraging somebody, whether that be participating in fighting, he wasn’t involved. Period.”
As Ulrich details, the December 31 police report regarding the episode states Adam Sapp was assaulted as he walked towards an elevator in Coleman’s apartment complex. Sapp doesn’t remember the altercation, but a woman who was with him has accused Coleman of being involved in the fight and claims Coleman “beat up Sapp.” Sapp reportedly suffered a concussion, a ruptured eardrum, and other minor injuries, per Ulrich.
Even if Coleman isn’t eventually charged with a crime, he could still be subject to NFL discipline. As previous investigations have shown, the league often doesn’t take its cue from the legal process, preferring to mete out punishment of its own volition.
Justin Gilbert Suspended For One Year
Former top ten pick Justin Gilbert has been suspended for one year by commissioner Roger Goodell, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Gilbert, a free agent cornerback, was already facing suspension for the first four weeks of the regular season. 
Gilbert’s initial one month ban stemmed from a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. It’s not clear what the new suspension is for, but it seems likely that he has been suspended for a longer term as a repeat offender under the same policy.
This is yet another setback for Gilbert who has yet to do much in his NFL career. After being selected No. 8 by the Browns in 2014, Gilbert struggled totaled just three starts and one interception in 23 games. Later, he drew criticism from owner Jimmy Haslam for his lack of maturity.
The Browns gave up on Gilbert prior to the 2016 season, sending him to the AFC North rival Steelers for a 2018 sixth-round draft pick. Gilbert also failed to realize his potential in Pittsburgh, though, as he played just 11 defensive snaps in 12 games. The Steelers cut Gilbert in February and the only time he’s appeared on the pages of Pro Football Rumors since has been regarding his two suspensions.
At this rate, it will be an uphill battle for Gilbert to get back into football and realize his potential.
Browns Hope Ricardo Louis Will Seize No. 3 WR Job; Team Will Ease Coleman, Garrett Into Camp
- Kenny Britt and Corey Coleman sit squarely atop the Browns‘ wide receiver depth chart, but the No. 3 job is wide open, and there are a number of second-years players who could fill that role. However, Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com says the team hopes Ricardo Louis, last year’s fourth-round selection, can be the guy. Though Louis appeared in all 16 games for the club last season, he caught just 18 passes for 205 yards, but given the big-play potential he flashed at Auburn, Cleveland will give him every opportunity to earn a key role this summer.
Browns Move Several To 4-3 DE
Myles Garrett‘s recent trouble with left leg maladies returned this week, with the Browns announcing the No. 1 overall pick sprained his left foot. Although he’s expected to be ready for training camp in just more than five weeks, the fact that Garrett’s junior season at Texas A&M was interrupted by left ankle trouble is not a good sign. But the Browns have invested heavily in their edge rushers over the past few years.
The Browns have some additional options at defensive end this season to supplement Garrett, with recent draft picks now firmly stationed there. Whereas the team moved Emmanuel Ogbah from outside linebacker to end in the team’s previous 3-4 scheme last season, the 2016 second-round pick is a more natural 4-3 end, Terry Pluto of cleveland.com notes. This applies to 2016 third-rounder Carl Nassib as well, with Nate Orchard now lining up there too. Prior to becoming a 3-4 outside ‘backer with the Browns after being taken in the 2015 second round, Orchard registered 18.5 sacks at Utah as a senior while at end.
Cleveland’s defensive end contingent also features Desmond Bryant, who is returning from a torn pectoral muscle that erased his 2016 season. Bryant has not played 4-3 end since he was with the Raiders, and he also saw time as a defensive tackle with the Silver and Black. The 31-year-old Bryant would be a good bet to be one of the players the Browns could shift to tackle in sub-packages.
Myles Garrett Diagnosed With Foot Sprain
Myles Garrett did not complete the Browns’ three-day minicamp, sitting out the final day before leaving Cleveland while in a walking boot after suffering an injury Wednesday. But the team shed some light on the No. 1 overall pick’s situation on Saturday.
The former Texas A&M phenom suffered a left lateral foot sprain, the team revealed (via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com). Two doctors confirmed the diagnosis, per Cabot, who adds the Browns expect him to be ready for training camp. Rookies report to Berea, Ohio, on July 25, giving Garrett just more than five weeks to recover.
Garrett suffered the injury while rushing Brock Osweiler in a two-minute setting. The Browns excused the defensive end from the last day of minicamp Thursday and from attending a youth clinic with the team’s rookies at FirstEnergy Stadium a day later. The team hoped Garrett avoided structural damage, and it appears he has. But the injury to the left foot could be a sign of concern because of the left ankle trouble he had during the 2016 season.
Garrett missed some time during OTAs with a sore foot but had left ankle trouble last season while at Texas A&M. The high ankle sprain limited Garrett to 10 games as a junior. He registered 8.5 sacks, which were a career low, and 4.5 of those came against Texas-San Antonio.
Tramon Williams Discusses Displeasure With Browns
- Williams also indicated that he was ready to give up on the Browns during the 2016 season. “There was a point during the season last year where I wanted to be released,” he said. The 34-year-old appeared in 12 games (seven starts) last season, compiled 36 tackles, five passes defended, and one interception – his lowest totals since 2007.

Latest On Browns' Quarterbacks
Second-round signal-caller DeShone Kizer is in the mold of Super Bowl-winning division rivals Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers) and Joe Flacco (Ravens), according to Browns quarterbacks coach David Lee, but it doesn’t sound as if he’ll see the field for a while. “He’s got a great future,” Lee told reporters, including Nate Ulrich of Ohio.com. “He’s just a long way from being ready. He’s not ready, but he’s climbing on it, and he’s making progress.”
Kizer, the 52nd overall pick from Notre Dame, is competing against Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler to open the season as the Browns’ starter. Osweiler has impressed Cleveland’s coaches since coming over in March in a surprising trade with Houston, and the fact that he’s the most experienced and accomplished of the Browns’ QBs matters to Lee. “You can say what you want, but the guy in the last two years has taken two different teams [Texans and Denver Broncos] to the playoffs, and there’s nobody else in that room that can say that,” Lee pointed out. “Plus, this is his sixth year of experience. [The other guys have] got [little or] no experience. … So he’s the senior citizen. He looks like a guy who’s played before. He’s great at the line of scrimmage. He’s great in the huddle, I mean calming effect. Is he the quarterback? We don’t have one yet, but he’s in the mix for sure.”
