Jalen Collins has not played in an NFL game since Super Bowl LI, seeing suspensions hijack his career. But the embattled cornerback landed on the Colts’ practice squad earlier this season. He may have a chance to suit up again.
The Colts made the decision to promote the former second-round pick from their practice squad Saturday.
With five corners on their roster going into a win-or-go-home game against the Titans on Sunday night, the Colts have backup Nate Hairston listed as questionable. Collins provides insurance.
The Falcons waived Collins earlier this year. He served 10-game suspensions for violating the NFL’s PED policy the past two years. Atlanta did not activate Collins after his 2017 ban ended and did not bother keeping him around during his 10-game hiatus this year.
Collins made two starts for Atlanta during the 2016 regular season, intercepting two passes, and started in each of the team’s three playoff games that year.
Here are Friday’s minor moves:
Arizona Cardinals
Carolina Panthers
Cleveland Browns
Detroit Lions
Indianapolis Colts
Jacksonville Jaguars
Washington Redskins
The Colts are eyeing some reinforcement at linebacker. Veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer reports (via Twitter) that the team auditioned linebacker Korey Toomer today.
The team has suddenly been hit with injuries to their linebacker corps. Starter Anthony Walker Jr. missed last week with a shoulder injury, while reserve linebacker Skai Moore was placed on injured reserve earlier this month. Plus, the Colts have seen lackluster production from the position outside of Walker and Darius Leonard, although it’s too late in the season to make any significant lineup changes.
Toomer could at least provide Indy with a veteran rotation piece. The 30-year-old was plenty productive last season with the Chargers, compiling 48 tackles, one sack, three passes defended, one pick, and two forced fumbles. Toomer signed a one-year deal with the 49ers this offseason, but he didn’t make it to the regular season with his new team. He ended up catching on with the Packers, and he compiled three tackles in seven games with Green Bay this season. The team ended up releasing the veteran in late November.
The Colts have been eyeing some defensive reinforcement for several weeks, as they recently auditioned a pair of linebackers in Chris Odom and Greer Martini. The Colts are recently worked out defensive end Marcus Smith.
The Colts signed tight end Erik Swoope to the practice squad, according to a team announcement. Swoope will serve as insurance in case tight end Eric Ebron is not cleared from concussion protocol before Sunday night’s pivotal game against the Titans.
Swoope originally signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in March of 2014. He made his first real impact in 2016, when he caught 15 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown. After losing his 2017 season to a knee issue, he returned this year to appear in seven games and catch eight passes for 87 yards and three scores.
The Colts dropped Swoope a few weeks ago, but he’s back to serve as a potential backstop for a crucial win-and-in contest. As of this writing, Mo Alie-Cox and Ryan Hewitt are the only other healthy tight ends on the active roster.
To make room for Swoope, the Colts dropped quarterback Phillip Walker from the practice squad.

This time of year, a lot of teams are auditioning guys for potential reserve/futures deals to be a part of their 90-man rosters for 2019. It’s also common to see a lot of CFL guys getting looks this time of year, because players participating in the 2018 CFL season aren’t eligible to sign NFL contracts until after the regular season is over.

Former Eagles first-rounder Marcus Smith worked out for the Colts this week, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). The defensive end spent time with the Redskins earlier season, but his stint in D.C. lasted less than two weeks.

Smith entered the league with tons of hype for his athletic ability, but he has not been able to piece it altogether. He was largely ineffective for the Eagles and his second act with the Seahawks ended this summer when he flirted with retirement. Smith did manage 2.5 sacks in both 2016 and 2017, but he has never started an NFL game in his five seasons.
With two games to go, the Colts have a 34% chance of reaching the postseason, per FiveThirtyEight. With wins over the Giants and Titans, they’ll be virtually assured of a Wild Card spot.
The Jets are believed to be targeting Le’Veon Bell this offseason, but he has his eyes on the Colts, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY hears. It’s a situation that is all too familiar for the Jets who tried, and failed, to land the most coveted free agent in offseason’s class.
The source, who has spoken to Bell, said the running back hasn’t ruled out the Jets or any other team, but the Colts are at “the top of his list” because of Andrew Luck and the team’s cap room that could exceed $120MM.
“He has his eyes on the Colts, no doubt about that,” the source said. “He sees Luck and that offense and all that cap room and they’re much closer than the Jets. He wants to go someplace he can win right away.”
Last year, the Jets went hard after Kirk Cousins, despite rumblings that they were just being used for leverage against better football teams. Ultimately, that may have been the case – the Jets offered a three-year, $90MM deal to the QB, but he took $6MM less to sign with the Vikings. Whether they would have been better off with Cousins is another matter, but it’s clear that the Jets have issues when it comes to landing top free agents.
Meanwhile, the Colts’ level of interest in Bell is not immediately clear. They’d surely like to have him, but There’s no guarantee that they’ll offer him the historic contract he seeks.
