Stefon Diggs To Miss Week 9; Dalvin Cook Expected To Play

  • Vikings WR Stefon Diggs will miss today’s game with a rib injury, per Rapoport (video link), though it is uncertain whether Diggs will miss any additional time (given that he expected to play today and was listed as questionable on the final injury report, it seems that he’ll be ready to go after Minnesota’s bye next week. Meanwhile, RB Dalvin Cook is expected to hit the field today, which will mark his first appearance since Week 4. Cook will be on a pitch count and is only expected to see 20 snaps or so, but when the team returns from bye, it could have Cook and Diggs at full strength.

Dalvin Cook To Return In Week 9?

The Vikings may have their preferred starting running back in action earlier than expected. Dalvin Cook is on track to play Sunday against the Lions, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

Cook’s been dealing with a hamstring injury for most of the season and hasn’t played since Week 4. While the Vikings having the 2017 second-rounder back would help their cause, Krammer adds he’s only expected to be used in a part-time capacity. A 15- to 20-snap workload should be anticipated for Cook.

Listed as questionable, Cook has struggled with this injury for weeks. The Vikings previously planned to play him against the Cardinals three weeks ago but nixed the idea after warmups. Cook’s only rushed for 98 yards (2.7 per carry) this season, and Latavius Murray‘s continued to be the Vikings’ primary back.

He was a limited practice participant throughout this week. Cook said (via the Associated Press) he didn’t experience a setback, missing practice for two weeks, instead calling this a slow-healing malady.

Minnesota has a Week 10 bye, but Mike Zimmer said the team isn’t interested in delaying a return until after that — as a previous report indicated would be the play — if Cook is healthy enough to contribute. Still, it sounds like Cook won’t be at full strength until after the bye at the earliest.

Minor NFL Transactions: 11/3/18

Here are Saturday’s minor moves:

Denver Broncos

Detroit Lions

Minnesota Vikings

New England Patriots

Cardinals Cut Sam Bradford

Sam Bradford‘s Cardinals stay wasn’t expected to be lengthy, especially after the team benched the well-paid quarterback in September. But it will end up being shorter than expected.

The Cardinals announced they’ve cut Bradford. This comes after they shopped their current backup quarterback at the trade deadline, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter).

Arizona gave Bradford a $20MM guarantee to be its bridge option, but after starting three games in what turned out to be three losses, the oft-injured quarterback hit the bench and has not returned. Josh Rosen remains Arizona’s starter and likely will be for the foreseeable future. Now, Mike Glennon is his primary backup.

This move coming after the trade deadline means Bradford is on the waiver wire. Had the Cardinals cut him last week, the 30-year-old passer would’ve hit free agency. Now, he’ll be a possible candidate to land with a quarterback-needy team. Bradford has $2.5MM in base salary remaining on his Cards contract for 2018, with ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter adding (via Twitter) $2.5MM in roster bonuses remain as well.

Bradford’s deal comes with a 2019 $24.687MM cap hit — something that will surely be untenable for any team at this point in the former Heisman Trophy winner’s career. However, this is an option season. If Bradford is claimed and is on the claiming team’s roster on the third day of the 2019 league year, his $7.5MM 2019 base salary and a $10MM roster bonus become fully guaranteed. This path seems incredibly unlikely.

This transaction, interestingly, affects the Vikings as well. Since the Cardinals cut Bradford before Week 10, the Vikings will lose out on a projected third-round compensatory pick in 2019, per ESPN.com’s Mike Sando (on Twitter). The compensatory formula now stands to net the Cards an additional sixth-round 2019 pick because of Kareem Martin‘s free agency defection, per OverTheCap’s Nick Korte (Twitter link).

For his short Cardinals career, one of the NFL’s premier cash collectors received $15.9MM, per ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter). In signing Bradford for what turned out to be an 80-pass season, the Cardinals will be tagged with $5MM in dead money come 2019.

Teams like the Bills, Jaguars or even the now-Pat Shurmur-coached Giants could conceivably be interested in claiming Bradford as a rental option, though he’s dealt with a pectoral injury since being demoted and has not proven to be a reliable option since setting the NFL completion percentage record with the 2016 Vikings. Bradford figures to be a free agent in 2019. The spree of windfalls for the former No. 1 overall pick are probably over after four different teams paid him as a starter since the 2010 season.

After starting for most of the 2015 season and all of 2016, Bradford has played in just five games since the start of last season. Another knee injury ended his run as Minnesota’s starter. It’s likely if Bradford chooses to keep playing in 2019, he’ll have to do so as a backup.

Vikings Promote WR Chad Beebe

With Stefon Diggs ailing, the Vikings have added some reinforcement at wide receiver. ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reports that Minnesota has promoted wideout Chad Beebe from the practice squad.

The undrafted rookie out of Northern Illinois joined the Vikings shortly after this past year’s draft. Beebe ended up having a standout preseason for the Vikings, hauling in nine catches for 95 yards and two scores. After being cut at the end of the preseason, the wideout joined the team’s practice squad, where he’s spent the entire campaign.

According to Cronin, Beebe has been praised by the coaching staff for his work on the practice squad. The 24-year-old provides a bit of a different look at wideout, as he contributed primarily as a slot receiver throughout his collegiate career. Beebe also saw some run as a punt returner throughout the preseason, but Cronin cautions that he’d only contribute to special teams on “an emergency basis.”

Diggs didn’t practice this week as he recovers from a rib injury. The wideout said he expects to play against the Lions tomorrow, but he was ultimately listed as questionable on the final injury report. While today’s move could solely be for insurance, it may also be a sign that Diggs won’t end up suiting up.

Even if Diggs does miss time, Beebe would likely slide in at the bottom of the Vikings depth chart behind Adam Thielen, Laquon Treadwell, Aldrick Robinson, and Brandon Zylstra.

Ifeadi Odenigbo Had Other Offers

  • Before signing with the Vikings‘ practice squad earlier this week, defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo also had p-squad offers from the Giants and Packers, per Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press (Twitter link). Odenigbo, who also worked out for the Saints earlier this week, says he’ll now play only on the edge for Minnesota instead of dabbling at defensive tackle, and interestingly says that designation was actually part of his pact with the Vikings.
