Bears Place OL Dakota Dozier On IR
Dakota Dozier will not play for the Bears this season. The former full-season Vikings starter signed with the Bears this year, but the team placed the veteran offensive lineman on IR on Tuesday.
While eight players can return from IR per team this year, that only applies if they are carried through to the 53-man roster on final cutdown day later this summer. Any player who lands on IR before that date cannot play for that team this season. Dozier’s only path to suiting up in 2022 will be via an injury settlement that leads him off Chicago’s IR list, assuming the ninth-year blocker will be healthy enough to play this season.
The Bears gave Dozier a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum in late March and did not include any fully guaranteed money in the pact. Dozier, 31, appeared to be a depth piece in Chicago, but Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic notes (via Twitter) he did see some first-team reps at right guard during the Bears’ offseason program. Cody Whitehair and Sam Mustipher are positioned as Chicago’s guard starters. The team also used three Day 3 picks on interior O-linemen in this year’s draft, but Dozier would have represented a swingman candidate.
A former Jets fourth-round pick, Dozier has started 27 career games. Many of them came with the Vikings in 2020. Dozier started all 16 Minnesota games that year. Last season, he played in six contests as a Vikings backup. Dozier previously served in that role with the Jets, playing out his rookie deal in 2018 and catching on with the Vikes.
To replace Dozier on their 90-man offseason roster, the Bears signed defensive back Jayson Stanley. A UDFA out of Georgia, Stanley has played eight regular-season games — all with the 2020 Seahawks.
Bears Sign OL Dakota Dozier
Dakota Dozier is switching NFC North teams. The Bears are signing the offensive lineman, according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (on Twitter).

Dozier spent the past three seasons with the Vikings, including a 2020 campaign where he started all 16 games without missing an offensive snap. Despite his role, he was cut following the 2021 preseason. He ended up spending the majority of last season on Minnesota’s practice squad, with his six appearances all coming on special teams. The Vikings told the lineman after the season that they wouldn’t be re-signing him, per Tomasson.
The former fourth-round pick spent the beginning of his career with the Jets, starting seven of his 38 games in four years with the organization.
In Chicago, Dozier will likely compete for a backup role on the offensive line. Chicago added fellow lineman Lucas Patrick on a two-year deal last week.

Vikings Cut Everson Griffen, Get Down To 53
Everson Griffen‘s reunion with the Vikings has already come to an end. The veteran defensive end was among the team’s cuts today.
Griffen spent his entire career with the Vikings up until 2020. Splitting time between the Cowboys and Lions, Griffen finished out with six sacks in total. Meanwhile, no Vikings edge rusher finished with more than five. His ten-year run with the Vikes saw four Pro Bowl appearances and 74.5 total sacks.
Running back Ameer Abdullah was among the other players to earn their walking papers today. The veteran spent the past two-plus seasons with the Vikings, collecting 313 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on 55 carries.

NFL Distributes Performance-Based Payouts
Since 2002, the NFL’s performance-based pay system has rewarded low-salary players who exceed their expected playing time. This year, due to the pandemic, the league and the players’ union negotiated a gradual payout schedule, one that will meter out the money between now and 2024.
All in all, the league divested $8.5MM per club. This year’s top earner is Buccaneers guard Alex Cappa, a 2018 third-round pick who played every single snap for the eventual champs. Cappa will now receive an extra $622K on top of his $750K base salary for 2021. Per the union’s records, 25 other players also topped $500K, including Cardinals tackle Kelvin Beachum ($604K), Bills cornerback Taron Johnson ($579K), Rams guard Austin Corbett ($573K), Lions cornerback Amani Oruwariye ($572K), Bears tackle Germain Ifedi ($571K), Steelers offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor ($568K), Vikings offensive lineman Dakota Dozier ($561K), Ravens safety DeShon Elliott ($557K) and Bucs safety Jordan Whitehead ($555K).
