Minor NFL Transactions: 8/20/22
With the deadline for more roster cutdowns looming, here are today’s minor moves around the league:
Carolina Panthers
- Activated from active/PUP list: LB Shaq Thompson
Los Angeles Rams
- Waived: TE Kendall Blanton, RB Raymond Calais, S Jairon McVea and RB A.J. Rose
- Waived (injury designation): WR J.J. Koski
New England Patriots
- Waived: S Jalen Elliott and CB Devin Hafford
Seattle Seahawks
- Waived: S Bubba Bolden, TE Cade Brewer, DL Matthew Gotel and CB Elijah Jones
- Released: LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe
Thompson’s return will be a welcomed sight in Carolina. The 28-year-old had his third-straight 100-tackle season in 2021, adding a pair of sacks and interceptions. Offseason knee surgery cost him time in training camp, but the fact that he passed his conditioning test today means that he can resume practicing with plenty of time before the start of the regular season. Returning to full health in time for Week 1, while expected, would be a crucial development for the Panthers’ defense.

Rose had a productive college career at Kentucky before going undrafted during the 2021 draft. He spent his entire rookie campaign with the Vikings organization but didn’t get into a game.

Vikings Cut Everson Griffen, Get Down To 53
Everson Griffen‘s reunion with the Vikings has already come to an end. The veteran defensive end was among the team’s cuts today.
Griffen spent his entire career with the Vikings up until 2020. Splitting time between the Cowboys and Lions, Griffen finished out with six sacks in total. Meanwhile, no Vikings edge rusher finished with more than five. His ten-year run with the Vikes saw four Pro Bowl appearances and 74.5 total sacks.
Running back Ameer Abdullah was among the other players to earn their walking papers today. The veteran spent the past two-plus seasons with the Vikings, collecting 313 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on 55 carries.
The Vikings made the following moves to get down to 53 players:
Released
- LS Andrew DePaola
- OG Dakota Dozier

Vikings Bring In 11 UDFAs
The Vikings have filled out their initial undrafted free agent class, according to a team announcement. Here are the 11 rookies the Vikings will bring in to join their 11-man draft class:
- Turner Bernard, LS (San Diego State)
- Tuf Borland, LB (Ohio State)
- Christian Elliss, LB (Idaho)
- Zeandae Johnson, DT (Cal)
- Myron Mitchell, WR (UAB)
- Riley Patterson, K (Memphis)
- Whop Philyor, WR (Indiana)
- Blake Proehl, WR (East Carolina)
- A.J. Rose, RB (Kentucky)
- Jordan Scott, NT (Oregon)
- Zach Von Rosenberg, P (LSU) (story)
The Vikings are guaranteeing $100K of Proehl’s base salary and adding a $15K signing bonus, veteran NFL reporter Aaron Wilson tweets. This will mark another second-generation NFL wideout for the Vikes, who already employ Don Beebe‘s son, Chad. Blake Proehl’s father, Ricky Proehl, played 17 NFL seasons. Christian Elliss joins Proehl in being the son of an NFLer; his father, Luther Elliss, played 10 seasons as a defensive tackle (nine with the Lions).
Patterson will join Greg Joseph as the Vikings’ kickers. Minnesota added Joseph in February, but he has not kicked in a regular-season game since 2019. He and Patterson, who kicked in 51 games for the Tigers, figure to compete for the job in camp. Patterson missed seven field goals as a senior but made 23 of 25 kicks in 2019. They will vie to succeed Dan Bailey, who struggled last season.
Philyor proving to be an NFL-caliber receiver could potentially land him an endorsement deal, at least at Minneapolis-area Burger Kings, with his nickname being geared around his affinity for Whoppers as a boy. At Indiana, he posted a 1,002-yard receiving season as a junior in 2019.
