Salary Cap Rollover For All 32 NFL Teams
This week, the NFLPA updated its salary cap report to include the rollover amounts for all 32 teams in the NFL. The Browns, as expected, lead the league in $58.9MM in cap space rolled over from the previous season. Here is the full rundown of each team’s rollover amounts:
After the Browns, the 49ers ($56MM), Titans ($30.3MM), Jaguars ($27.8MM), and Jets ($17.3MM) boast the highest rollover amounts in the league. The Dolphins ($69K), Saints ($287K), Giants ($365K), Eagles ($514K), and the Seahawks ($547K) have the least amount of rollover. In total, teams carried over nearly $340MM from last season, good for an average of $10.6MM per club.
Who Might 49ers Target At No. 9 or 10?
- Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle looks at some players the 49ers may be targeting ahead of next week’s NFL Scouting Combine. The 49ers are awaiting a coin flip against the Raiders to see if they’ll be picking at No. 9 or 10 but Branch believes cornerback will be a top priority for the team in the draft. Ohio State’s Denzel Ward was a player he identified could help in the secondary, with Vontae Davis and Marcus Peters serving as options through free agency and trade. A pass-rusher may be hard to come by, as North Carolina State’s Bradley Chubb is expected to go in the top five with a major gap in between the next-highest rated pass rushers. Branch also pointed to Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson as an option in the first round.
49ers, Browns Were Interested In Peters?
The Chiefs made another seismic trade this offseason, this time sending one of their best players to the Rams. But multiple other teams may have been interested in Marcus Peters prior to the Rams landing him.
Both the 49ers and Browns were interested in determining what it would cost to acquire the fourth-year cornerback, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter). However, Rapoport and NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo describe (on Twitter) both teams’ interest as “lukewarm” in the All-Pro corner.
However, it’s clear the Rams pushed talks to a degree their reported competition wasn’t willing to.
Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports (via Twitter) the Browns were not interested in bringing Peters to Cleveland. Additionally, the 49ers were interested, but both Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter link) and Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com report San Francisco did not submit an offer to Kansas City for Peters.
The Rams’ talks advanced to the point the Chiefs were seeking to add another big name to their defense in Robert Quinn, along with a pick, Rapoport tweets. This would have been interesting because Quinn’s play has not been on the level it was during his Pro Bowl seasons during the mid-2010s and the pass-rushing talent makes far more than Peters does at this point. Unlike Kendall Fuller coming to K.C. in the Alex Smith trade, the Chiefs did not get much 2018 salary relief by unloading Peters, who is entering the fourth season of his rookie deal. Quinn is set to earn $12.4MM this season.
Both the 49ers and Browns have needs at corner. Each team already visited with Vontae Davis, and Maiocco notes the 49ers are likely to be connected to big-name corners — including free agent-to-be Trumaine Johnson — come March. The Rams will not retain Johnson, per Rapoport.
Daniel Kilgore Contract Details
- Daniel Kilgore‘s new three-year deal with the 49ers is worth nearly $11.78MM and and contains $4.825MM fully guaranteed, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM (Twitter link). The 30-year-old Kilgore was a backup or injured for much of the first five years of his career, but he’s started 29 games for the 49ers over the past two seasons. For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus ranked Kilgore as just the 23rd-best center in the league in 2017, but San Francisco is clearly higher on him than that finish would indicate.
49ers To Meet With Vontae Davis
The Niners will meet with cornerback Vontae Davis on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). This marks Davis’ third known free agent visit of the offseason. 
Davis, 30 in May, was released by the Colts in November due to health issues and a rumored clashing between him and the coaching staff. Recently, Davis was given medical clearance by doctors, paving the way for him to meet with interested clubs. After meetings with the Bills and Browns, Davis is now discussing things with the cash-flush Niners.
With $74.5MM in cap room, the Niners trail only the Browns and Colts in flexibility. Davis is in a unique spot as a valuable free agent who is eligible to sign in February and both the 49ers and Browns are in the unique position of being able to sign the corner without really impacting plans for March. For what it’s worth, the Bills also have a decent amount of breathing room with roughly $29.6MM in space.
Davis disappointed in 2016 and didn’t see the field much last year thanks to his core injury, but he was among the league’s best corners in 2014 and 2015. The Niners could be interested in seeing if he could turn back the clock. perhaps on an affordable one-year deal.
49ers Interested In Oklahoma State WR
- Oklahoma State wide receiver Marcell Ateman has impressed the 49ers, among other teams, Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com reports. Ateman has been working with former 200- and 400-meter world-record holder Michael Johnson in developing for the draft and is viewed as a Day 2 prospect, but Pauline writes his stock figures to rise based on the speed and vertical numbers he’s been posting. Ateman broke out for 59 receptions, 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior.
Latest On Foster, Coyle, Carradine
- As Matt Maiocco of NBCSports.com observes, when the 49ers have released a player due to off-field issues in the past, they have done so immediately. The fact that San Francisco has yet to release Reuben Foster in light of the recent domestic violence allegations levied against him indicates to Maiocco that the team has not seen enough concrete information to cut ties with the former Alabama standout.
- In the same piece, Maiocco reiterates that the 49ers will look to re-sign LB Brock Coyle, assuming the team is confident that Coyle will make a full recovery from his offseason shoulder surgery. Maiocco is also more optimistic than other writers that the 49ers will be able to retain DE Tank Carradine .
49ers Speak Multiple Times With Foster
- The 49ers spoke to Reuben Foster in person and by phone this week, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports. The linebacker is being investigated for an alleged domestic violence incident, leading to his second arrest of the offseason, that occurred last weekend.

49ers Hire Chris Kiffin
- Florida Atlantic University defensive coordinator Chris Kiffin is joining the NFL ranks, as he’s agreed to become the 49ers‘ pass rush specialist, according to Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated. Kiffin comes from a long line of NFL coaches, as he’s the brother of Lane Kiffin and the son of Monte Kiffin. In San Francisco, he’ll work with young defenders Arik Armstead, Solomon Thomas, and DeForest Buckner.
