Free Agents

Despite never seeing time in a regular season NFL game, Seaton stuck around around the league for five years. The Villanova product was a 2017 seventh-round pick by the Titans, and he later had two stints with the Buccaneers and a stint with the Browns. The 28-year-old opted out of the 2020 campaign, and he missed the entire 2021 season with an injury.

Rams, WR Cooper Kupp Continue To Talk Extension

Cooper Kupp‘s next contract with the Rams could reset the market at wide receiver. While we haven’t heard much on that front this offseason, head coach Sean McVay acknowledged today that the organization has had “good dialogue” with the receiver regarding a future deal (per Stu Jackson of the team’s website on Twitter).

“Those are things that are still at the forefront of our thoughts,” McVay said in regards to extensions for Kupp and defensive lineman Aaron Donald.

Kupp also discussed a potential extension with reporters today while attending voluntary OTAs. The wideout said he’s seeking “fair” money, but he also said that he’s not “trying to beat anybody or compare myself to anybody” (per The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue on Twitter). Kupp did acknowledge the rapidly rising receiver market, saying he’s excited for his peers’ “life-changing” money (via Rodrigue).

The Super Bowl MVP has two years remaining on a contract which is set to pay him just over $14.5MM per season. We heard back in March that the front office was zeroing in on an extension with Donald and would then pivot their focus on Kupp. The 28-year-old wideout had a historic season in 2021, and he’s established himself as the top player at his position.

Tyreek Hill‘s recent deal with the Dolphins makes him the highest-paid receiver in NFL history in terms of annual salary ($30MM) and guarantees ($72.2MM). Davante Adams‘ deal with the Raiders is still the most lucrative non-QB contract in NFL history, with the wideout having the potential to earn $141.3MM. Kupp could easily double his salary while still providing the Rams with a bit of a discount.

Saints To Meet With WR Jarvis Landry

A month into free agency, Jarvis Landry remains without a team. That could change soon. The Saints are bringing in the Pro Bowl wideout for a visit Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com tweets.

The Saints were connected to Landry early in free agency, but the five-time Pro Bowler soon visited the Falcons and has been continually mentioned as a candidate to return to the Browns. A Cleveland return remains in play, per Fowler. But Landry will huddle up with the Saints first. An LSU alum, Landry is a New Orleans-area native.

Having cut Emmanuel Sanders and having seen Michael Thomas‘ injury timetable pushed back to the point he missed the entire season, New Orleans featured perhaps the NFL’s worst receiving corps last season. Thomas is back in play for the Saints, who will feature a new play-caller for the first time in 16 years. Pete Carmichael’s offense could certainly use additional help at receiver, given Thomas’ issues staying healthy over the past two seasons.

New Orleans acquired a second first-round pick from Philadelphia, parting with its 2023 first-rounder to do so. A wide receiver addition would make sense for the Saints there. A Landry move before the draft, however, may change the organization’s plans. The Saints still have Marquez Callaway rostered, and they re-signed Tre’Quan Smith this offseason.

Landry, 29, spoke with Deshaun Watson about teaming up in Atlanta — before the Browns’ landscape-changing guarantee gave the Browns the win in those unusual sweepstakes — and the quarterback’s presence in Cleveland figures to matter. The Saints appear set to test the Browns’ interest level. Cleveland has a new No. 1 receiver in Amari Cooper, having cut Landry shortly after that acquisition was reported. Landry is coming off his worst season as a pro — a 570-yard, two-touchdown campaign — though Baker Mayfield‘s injuries limited the Browns’ passing attack. In Mayfield’s more successful 2020 season, Landry caught 72 passes for 840 yards. He has three 1,000-yard seasons on his resume.

Panthers LB Damien Wilson Arrested On Assault Charge

Recent Panthers free agent signing Damien Wilson was arrested last week on an assault charge. An ex-girlfriend of Wilson’s said the veteran linebacker “threatened to kill” her during an incident at her home in Frisco, Texas, Marcus Williams of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Frisco police charged Wilson with an assault with bodily injury of a family member. Wilson, 28, was also arrested for assault in 2017. No grand jury indictment came from that incident, however.

Wilson’s ex-girlfriend, Ryan Sokolosky, told the newspaper Wilson showed up at her apartment drunk and threatened to kill her while holding a tire iron. Wilson then choked a friend of Sokolosky’s who was with her that night, according to Sokolosky. Wilson followed the two women into Sokolosky’s apartment, where the alleged choking occurred, before getting back into his car and attempting to run Sokolosky over with the vehicle.

The seven-year NFL veteran smashed Sokolosky’s laptop and caused damage to her patio. The woman shared photos of the destroyed computer and patio damage with Frisco police, Williams notes, adding she obtained a protective order against Wilson. Wilson’s attorney denied the woman’s allegations.

The Panthers signed Wilson to a two-year, $6.9MM deal last month. Carolina is Wilson’s fourth NFL team, following stints in Dallas, Kansas City and Jacksonville. Wilson started in both Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LV for the Chiefs and was a 17-game starter with the Jaguars last season. This arrest could lead to a suspension for the former third-round pick, whose Panthers spot may be in jeopardy after this development.

Latest On Jets’ Decision At No. 4 Overall

Possessing an opportunity to nab two instant starters in this draft, the Jets might not be in lockstep with their two top-10 picks. While the team’s wide receiver pursuit continues to be connected to the No. 10 choice, its No. 4 pick supplies more intrigue.

GM Joe Douglas “loves” North Carolina State tackle Ikem Ekwonu, according to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano. Although Douglas could supersede any other staffer’s preference, Vacchiano’s mock draft features Robert Saleh winning a power struggle that concludes with defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux on his way to the Big Apple.

The Jets’ Thibodeaux visit last week involved a grilling on the motivation and personality issues that have affected the Oregon product’s draft stock, Vacchiano adds, noting that the Jets were impressed with the polarizing pass rusher. The Lions have also been connected to Thibodeaux, but the issues that have dinged his stock may be too much for Dan Campbell. The second-year Lions coach is not believed to be high on Thibodeaux, Albert Breer of SI.com notes. Gang Green would then be in position, should the Texans pass at No. 3, to stop a potential Thibodeaux freefall.

George Fant‘s emergence lessens the Jets’ O-line need, but Mekhi Becton‘s reliability nosedive has the 2020 first-round pick on unstable ground. The Jets are prepared to try Becton on the right side, and Vacchiano adds Ekwonu may not be a Day 1 starter if selected by the Jets. That would be unusual for a top-five pick and would depend on Becton’s readiness, but this overlap — despite the Jets’ interest in adding an impact tackle — could push the team to spend its top pick on another position.

This could certainly go the other way as well, which would have the Jets using three first-round picks on O-linemen in three years. Hearing Ekwonu connected to the Jets more than anyone else, Breer mocks the tackle to New York. Ekwonu played both tackle and guard with the Wolfpack; this could solve the positional overlap with Becton. Some teams view guard as Ekwonu’s best position, Breer adds.

Carl Lawson‘s ACL tear wounded the Jets’ pass rush before last season started, and Saleh’s first Jets defense ranked last. Although Lawson is set to return, the Jets still have a need on the edge. The team has famously struggled to address its edge position since 2006’s John Abraham trade. No Jet edge defender registered more than two sacks last season.

Steelers Claim WR Miles Boykin

Miles Boykin will have another chance in the AFC North. A day after the Ravens moved on, the Steelers made a successful waiver claim, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets.

One year remains on Boykin’s rookie contract. The Steelers have an extensive track record of developing receivers, and Boykin will be leaving the NFL’s run-heaviest offense. Of course, the Steelers have an uncertain quarterback situation — one now centered around Mitchell Trubisky — and Boykin is coming off a 2021 no-show.

Even as the former third-round pick struggled to catch on in Baltimore, he did combine for seven touchdown receptions on just 32 grabs between the 2019 and ’20 seasons. Subsequent Ravens additions Devin Duvernay and Rashod Bateman surpassed Boykin on the team’s depth chart. The 6-foot-4 wideout played eight games last season and caught only one pass.

Pittsburgh lost JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington in free agency, opening the door for others to vie for a complementary role alongside Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool. Boykin and Claypool were teammates at Notre Dame. The Steelers drafted Johnson in the 2019 third round, 27 spots before Boykin. Washington signed with the Cowboys, while Smith-Schuster joined the Chiefs a year after spurning their offer to stay in Pittsburgh.

49ers C Alex Mack Mulling Retirement

Alex Mack‘s 49ers contract runs through the 2023 season, but the decorated center has not determined if he wants to play the second season of that three-year pact. Mack is considering retirement, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Both Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch are operating like Mack will be back, but as the 49ers begin their offseason program, they face the prospect of losing another offensive line starter. A former first-round Browns pick, Mack returning would mean playing a 14th NFL season. Mack has played 204 career games.

We’ve had really good communication. He’s training like he’s coming back,” Lynch said at the league’s recent owners meetings. “I won’t speak for him, but all signs are him coming back and him being part of us.”

Shanahan brought his former Falcons charge to San Francisco last year, and Mack earned his seventh Pro Bowl nod — albeit as an alternate — after playing all 17 games. The 49ers have right tackle Mike McGlinchey coming off a season-ending injury and will be breaking in a new left guard, after Laken Tomlinson‘s Jets defection. Mack coming back would certainly help the contending team, one set to begin the Trey Lance era after four-plus seasons with Jimmy Garoppolo under center.

Mack surprising the 49ers with a mid-offseason retirement would remind of Joe Staley‘s decision to hang up his cleats in April 2020. The 49ers traded for Trent Williams to patch that hole. A Mack successor could come in the draft, should it be necessary. Center should certainly be a position the 49ers consider with an early- or mid-round pick, given Mack’s hesitancy ahead of his age-37 season.

Lions Meet With QB Malik Willis

The Lions could go in a number of directions with their No. 2 overall pick, one the rebuilding team has discussed trading. Detroit is also open to developing a quarterback behind Jared Goff. The team is wrapping up its homework on this subject.

Malik Willis finished up a visit with the team Tuesday, Albert Breer of SI.com tweets. Kenny Pickett is set to meet with Lions brass on Wednesday, the final day for top-30 visits. While it would surprise if the Lions drafted a quarterback, this prospect would make sense for a team that has time to develop one.

[RELATED: Lions Fine With Trading No. 2 Pick Before Draft]

GM Brad Holmes said the team remains confident Goff can start next season. With little expected from the upcoming version of the Lions, the concept of Willis or Pickett sitting for at least a year while Goff keeps the reins has almost certainly come up at team headquarters. But, with this QB class not on the level of those in recent years and behind the 2023 crop (as of now, at least), the Lions would be passing on the kind of instant starter Dan Campbell has said he wants with the No. 2 pick.

The Willis and Pickett meetings could also double as a last-ditch attempt to drum up trade interest in the second pick. This draft is short on surefire impact players at the top. A move down would give Detroit more ammo to address its many needs. ESPN ranks Willis as its No. 21 prospect, while NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah slots the Liberty passer 27th. Quarterback reaches occur annually, due to the positional value at play, but this would be one of the more notable climbs for a passing prospect.

Should the Lions go with a “best player available” strategy at 2, they still hold the Nos. 32 and 34 overall picks. That window would give the team another crack at quarterback, though Willis and Pickett should be considered unlikely to be available by then. Matt Corral, Desmond Ridder and Sam Howell very well could remain on the board here, however.

Seahawks Host S Damontae Kazee

On the lookout for additions in the secondary, the Seahawks are hosting one of the top safeties still on the market today. Damontae Kazee is visiting Seattle, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (Twitter link).

Kazee, 28, began his career with the Falcons in 2017. After a quiet rookie season, he established himself as a starter in his second year. The 2018 campaign saw him record a league-leading seven interceptions, along with 10 pass breakups and 82 tackles. His tenure with the Falcons ended with an Achilles tear in 2020, however.

Last offseason, the former fifth-rounder signed with the Cowboys. He started 15 of 17 contests in Dallas, making 52 tackles and notching a pair of interceptions. His 60.9 PFF grade is notably less than the one he earned in his career-best 2018 season, but is more in line with his normal ratings.

If he were to sign in Seattle, Kazee would face stiff competition for a starting role. The Seahawks have Jamal Adams under contract until 2026, and re-signed Quandre Diggs earlier this offseason. That pair constitutes an experienced (not to mention expensive) tandem, but the team lacks established depth behind them. Last month, Kazee was named as an option for the Steelers, who have yet to fill their vacancy at the position.
