Browns Meet With Ex-Packers GM Ron Wolf
The Browns met with former Packers GM Ron Wolf, as Jason Wilde of ESPN.com writes. Wolf claimed that he was not offered any type of formal consulting role with the team, but Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland (Twitter link) hears otherwise.
Cleveland enters Week 17 with a 3-12 record and it’s fair to say that the jobs of coach Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer could be in jeopardy. If Farmer is removed as GM, one likely candidate would be Ron Wolf’s son, Eliot Wolf who serves as the Packers’ director of player personnel. However, the elder Wolf said Monday that he will not be involved in any way if the Browns decide to replace Farmer and want to pursue Eliot.
“No, no. That’s already come up,” Wolf said, according to Wilde. “I told [owner Jimmy Haslam] that that is an entirely different situation. He’d have to do that himself. I would not be a part of it.”
Wolf, 76, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last summer in the newly created contributor category. Wolf, who took over the Packers in November 1991, is the man responsible for hiring coach Mike Holmgren and acquiring Brett Favre and Reggie White. In 2004, Wolf served as a consultant for the Browns and encouraged them to hire Holmgren as team president.
Browns May Discipline Johnny Manziel Again
The Browns may be forced to discipline Johnny Manziel yet again after yet another video of him drinking has surfaced. Coach Mike Pettine hasn’t made a final decision yet, but he admits that the team could punish the quarterback after he was filmed on Christmas Eve guzzling a black cherry Four Loko.
“Anytime there’s something with our players that casts them potentially in a bad light, whether it’s Johnny or any of our other guys, it’s certainly a concern,” said Pettine (via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer). “I’m sure I’ll see it, I’ll have a discussion with him about it.”
Pettine indicated that the newest Manziel video is not asáegregious as the one from earlier this year when Manziel was captured partying at a club in Austin, Texas. That incident got Manziel temporarily demoted from starter to third-string quarterback, though it was widely reported that the Browns were more upset about him lying about the event than the event itself.
“These circumstances are different from the incident that occurred before,” said Pettine, who vowed to come down hard on Manziel if he stepped out of line again. “But I’m just not going to go into a ton of detail with it until I get a little bit more information about it, but it’s something that I’m sure privately we’ll discuss if it needs to be discussed.”
Manziel spent 73 days in an addiction treatment center in the offseason and it’s believed that his treatment plan calls for him to abstain from alcohol. Manziel rushed for 108 yards against the Chiefs on Sunday and, at times, looked strong, but the Browns also need to worry about the Texas A&M product’s behavior off the field. The Browns will likely finish with one of the top two picks in the 2016 draft and they’ll need to figure out whether to use that selection on a quarterback or ride with the troubled Manziel.

Browns Cut Daryl Richardson, De’Ante Saunders
The Browns have made a pair of changes to their 53-man roster, releasing running back Daryl Richardson from the squad and promoting linebacker Cam Johnson to fill the newly-created opening, according to a team release.
In addition to cutting Richardson and elevating Johnson to the active roster, the Browns have also waived defensive back De’Ante Saunders from their practice squad. Saunders was arrested last week along with Cleveland linebacker Armonty Bryant, and has pleaded not guilty after being charged with suspicion of drunken driving, writes Evan MacDonald of Cleveland.com.
Saunders may eventually face discipline from the NFL if the league determines he violated the personal conduct policy, but if he does have to serve a suspension, it seems it won’t be with the Browns. As for Richardson, he signed with Cleveland earlier this month, but didn’t see the field during his brief stint with the team — he was inactive for the two games he was on the 53-man roster, and will now return to waivers.
Latest On Browns’ Ray Farmer, Mike Pettine
Earlier this month, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com suggested that it’s not realistic to expect Browns general manager Ray Farmer and head coach Mike Pettine to both return to Cleveland next year. According to Rapoport’s report, the deteriorating relationship between the coaching staff and the front office made it “unfathomable” that the Browns would want to have Farmer and Pettine continue working together in 2016.
Today, Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (video link) explores that same line of thinking. Citing sources within the Browns organization, Cole reports that Farmer’s seat appears hotter than Pettine’s, with the head coach considered the more likely candidate to keep his job. Cole’s sources indicate that Farmer’s draft selections and roster decisions are more to blame for Cleveland’s struggles this season than the job Pettine has done with the talent – or lack thereof – he has been given.
While Cole doesn’t go so far as to say that the Browns will fire Farmer in January, it sounds like that’s a realistic possibility. If owner Jimmy Haslam does decide to replace Farmer, Cole expects Chris Ballard (Chiefs), George Paton (Vikings), and Duke Tobin (Bengals) to receive consideration for the job, since those executives are viewed by the NFL as some of the top general manager candidates around the league.
With one week until the NFL’s Black Monday, I’d imagine there are several scenarios still in play in Cleveland, but it sounds like any outcome that involves both Pettine and Farmer staying in their current roles is extremely unlikely.
Updated Projections For 2016 Draft Order
Last week, we examined what the NFL’s projected draft order for the top 10 picks of 2016 would look like, with the Titans in the lead for the number one overall pick. Tennessee’s blowout loss to the Texans on Sunday kept the Titans firmly in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 pick, and the club could clinch that top selection with a loss next weekend against the Colts.
While the outlook at the top of the projected 2016 draft order remains the same, with the Browns right behind the Titans for that first overall pick, there were a few other changes to the top 10 based on this weekend’s results. The Ravens’ win over Pittsburgh dropped Baltimore from No. 3 to No. 8, while victories by the Saints and Bears removed those teams from the top 10 for now, with the Buccaneers and Giants taking over their spots.
Here’s the current projected order for the top 10 picks of the 2016 NFL draft, with just one week left in the regular season. Teams are sorted by worst record, with strength of schedule serving as the tiebreaker — the weaker a team’s schedule, the higher its draft pick.

Extra Points: Texans, Browns, Prospects
Some assorted notes from around the NFL and NCAA…
- B.J. Daniels‘ contract with the Texans is worth $660K over two seasons, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). The quarterback will earn $60K this season and $600K in 2016.
- Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer expects Browns center Alex Mack to explore free agency this offseason, and the writer believes the veteran will receive some interest from other clubs. Due to the disappointment of first-round pick Cameron Erving, Pluto still thinks Cleveland could spend to keep their Pro Bowl lineman.
- The Florida Gators will have a number of talented players to replace heading into 2016. Coach Jim McElwain confirmed underclassmen running back Kelvin Taylor, receiver Demarcus Robinson, and defensive end Alex McCalister will all enter the NFL Draft. All this is in addition to cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III, who is expected to be a top-10 pick this offseason.
- Maryland defensive end Quinton Jefferson has also declared his intentions to enter the NFL Draft, according to the Baltimore Sun. He made the announcement via his Twitter account. He joins his opposite bookend Yannick Ngakoue in leaving the Terrapins early for the pros.

Browns Notes: Manziel, Mack, Pettine
The latest on the Browns:
- Many would assume that Johnny Manziel is pulling for Mike Pettine to be fired after the Browns quarterback was demoted this season. However, he says that’s not the case, as Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon-Journal writes. “I have a ton of respect for [Pettine],” Manziel said Wednesday after practice. “Whether I liked the situation or not and liked the outcome of what happened, I had a part in that, too, and I had to take responsibility and own up to that. It was on nobody else but me. It wasn’t Coach Pettine’s fault that I did what I did. It was just on my end taking responsibility, and there’s no grudges, there’s no hate or anything like that. He’s our head coach and our leader, and I definitely have a respect for him and that’s not going to change no matter what.”
- Pettine, meanwhile, is aware that center Alex Mack might not be back in 2016. The Browns Pro Bowl center holds a player option that he can exercise if he wants to test the open market. “He could. We don’t have much control over that,” Pettine said with regards to the 30-year-old, as Ulrich writes. “That’s his personal decision. It’s in his favor that he has that in his contract, and we’ll react accordingly. Alex Mack’s a Cleveland Brown. We’d love to have him here and be a part of what we’re doing, but that’s a decision that’ll be made down the road.” On Wednesday, PFR’s Luke Adams highlighted Mack when looking at Pro Bowl players who could cash in in the open market this offseason.
- When it comes to Mack, the Browns’ contingency plan needs a contingency plan, Tom Reed of The Plain Dealer writes. The Browns thought they found their plan B when they selected the versatile Cameron Erving in the 2015 Draft with the No. 19 pick. As it turns out, Erving is a long way from playing anywhere near Mack’s level.
