Chiefs Waive Eight Players, Roster At 81

The Chiefs’ roster is now at 81 players after they waived eight today, the club announced. Therefore, Kansas City will need to make six more cuts before Tuesday’s 3pm CT deadline.

The following players were waived by the Chiefs:

Massaquoi, 29 had spent 2012-2014 with the Falcons but did not appear in a game last season. Massaquoi, who signed with the Chiefs in March, has appeared in 39 career games, starting four, posting 45 tackles and six sacks during his career.

Chiefs To Sign DE Jonathan Massaquoi

The Chiefs have agreed to sign defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi, according to Rand Getlin of (Twitter link). Massaquoi had spent 2012-2014 with the Falcons but did not appear in a game last season.

The 29-year-old Massaquoi has appeared in 39 career games, starting four, posting 45 tackles and six sacks during his career. He was claimed off waivers by the Titans at this time last season, but didn’t make the final roster and spent the year trying out for other clubs. Massaquoi never signed, but he now has a chance to make the club in Kansas City.

NFC Notes: Cassel, 49ers, Davis, Bears

Quarterback Brandon Weeden has been informed by Cowboys coaches that the team will start Matt Cassel in Week 7, following the bye, reports Ed Werder of (via Twitter). Of course, with Tony Romo still on track to return this season, it’s not as if either Weeden or Cassel will become a long-term starter in Dallas, but if he plays well, Cassel could become the favorite to return as Romo’s backup next year.

Here’s more from the NFC..

  • Having lost more than a dozen veterans who started games last season, the 49ers needed to make their free agent signings count this offseason. However, as Matt Maiocco of details, GM Trent Baalke‘s free agent class has mostly been a bust so far.
  • The 49ers would be open to trading tight end Vernon Davis, but he’ll be a tough sell given his contact, play, and age, Maiocco tweets.
  • The Bears brought in linebackers Lawrence Sidbury and Trevardo Williams for a tryout today along with defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi, according to an NFL source who spoke with Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter).
  • The Packers worked out safety Tim Scott today, Rob Demovsky of tweets. Green Bay might need a safety when Sean Richardson is placed on IR.

Today’s workouts from around the NFL..

Workout Notes: Phillips, McClain, Still

The Ravens worked out veteran outside linebacker Shaun Phillips, as Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets. Of course, after the Ravens reached agreement with Jason Babin earlier this evening, there might not be a spot for Phillips in Baltimore.

Phillips, 34, played nine seasons for the Chargers before joining the Broncos in 2013 and then signing with the Titans last March. The veteran inked a two-year, $5MM contract with Tennessee, but wasn’t overly effective in a part-time role, recording just a pair of sacks after reaching double-digits in 2013. With the Colts in 2014, Phillips made even less of an impact, recording seven tackles and no sacks in his five regular-season contests with the team.

Here are more notable NFL workouts from today..

  • We learned earlier today that Terrelle Pryor worked out for the Patriots. Pryor, making the transition from quarterback to wide receiver this summer, impressed Browns coaches in training camp. However, after the team set its 53-man roster prior to Week 1, Pryor was essentially the 53rd man, making him expendable when other holes needed to be filled.
  • Former Patriots cornerback Robert McClain was one of three cornerbacks who worked out for the Rams today, Adam Caplan of tweets.
  • The Colts worked out former Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still, Field Yates of tweets.
  • The Jets worked out a number of outside linebackers today, including former Falcon Jonathan Massaquoi, Brian Costello of the New York Post tweets. Massaquoi, 26, was selected by the Falcons in the fifth round of the 2012 draft, and has since played 40 games for the team, starting seven of them.
  • The Patriots had wide receiver Evan Spencer in for a tryout on Tuesday, Mike Reiss of tweets.

Titans Acquire Terrance West; Cobb To IR-DTR

3:31pm: The Titans sent a conditional 2016 seventh-rounder to the Browns in the swap, per Ian Rapoport of (via Twitter).

3:24pm: After claiming a pair of players off waivers earlier today, the Titans have added another outside player to their roster, sending a conditional 2016 draft pick to the Browns in exchange for running back Terrance West (Twitter links via Jim Wyatt of Titans Online). In a corresponding move, the club has placed David Cobb on IR with the designation to return.

West, 24, was the Browns’ leading rusher in his rookie season last year, accumulating 673 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, on 171 carries. He joined Cleveland before the season as a third-round pick out of Northwestern.

By acquiring West, the Titans will bolster a backfield that includes another 2014 draftee, Bishop Sankey, as the presumed starter. West had slipped down the depth chart in Cleveland, where the Browns are set to open the season with Isaiah Crowell as the starter and Duke Johnson in the mix as well. The club also may add a veteran back to complement its two youngsters.

In order to create room on their roster for edge defender David Bass and inside linebacker Steven Johnson, who joined the Titans as waiver claims earlier today, Tennessee has cut linebacker Justin Staples, linebacker Jonathan Massaquoi and tight end Chase Coffman, per Wyatt (via Twitter).

Titans Claim Jonathan Massaquoi Off Waivers

TUESDAY, 4:35pm: The Titans have claimed Massaquoi off waivers from the Falcons, assuming the remainder of his contract, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

FRIDAY, 4:26pm: Having already cut a pair of long-tenured players today, the Falcons have announced another roster move, according to Jay Adams of, who tweets that the team has waived Jonathan Massaquoi. The move comes on the heels of the Falcons also cutting wide receiver Harry Douglas and guard Justin Blalock.

Massaquoi, 26, was selected by the Falcons in the fifth round of the 2012 draft, and has since played 40 games for the team, starting seven of them. Vaughn McClure of notes (via Twitter) that the edge defender was in the doghouse last year with the club’s old coaching staff for skipping treatments on his foot, and was upset about his playing time. While Dan Quinn‘s arrival might have meant a clean slate for Massaquoi, it seems the team will instead move on, cutting him a year before his contract was set to expire.

Because he only has three years of experience, Massaquoi will have to clear waivers before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. As for the Falcons, their cap savings will be very limited — the Troy product had a cap number of just $702K for the coming year.
