Patrick Miller

Minor NFL Transactions: 6/2/16

Here are today’s minor moves.

  • The Steelers have signed fourth-round offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins, as Teresa Varley of Steelers.com writes. Hawkins offers experience at both left and right tackle but he’s expected to play on the left side for Pittsburgh. “He can come in here and help right away by competing and pushing the guys and making them better,” said offensive line coach Mike Munchak. “It just makes the group better when you can bring in a good athlete and a good player that has the ability to compete and help us become better. “We feel this guy can come in and learn from the guys we have, push the guys that we have and now it’s just a matter of how quickly we feel he can contribute.”
  • The Cardinals signed wide receiver Marquis Bundy, safety Tyrequek Zimmerman, and guard Jake Bernstein to return to the 90-man roster limit, Kyle Odegard of AZCardinals.com tweets.
  • The Chargers have agreed to sign guard/tackle Brett Boyko, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (via Twitter).
  • To make room, the Chargers waived offensive lineman Zeth Ramsay, as Eric Williams of ESPN.com tweets. The Bolts now have 17 offensive linemen on their 90-man roster.
  • The Lions announced that they have signed UDFA kicker Devon Bell and waived punter Kyle Christy. Bell, a Mississippi State product, played in all 13 games last year and averaged 62.1 yards per kickoff, while also punting nine times for 370 yards (41.1 avg).
  • The Jaguars have signed guard Patrick Omameh and released offensive lineman Patrick Miller, as Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com tweets. Omameh has played in 30 games over the course of his NFL career.
  • The Redskins signed UDFA wide receiver Jarvis Turner, Master Tesfatsion of The Washington Post tweets.
  • The Seahawks signed fullback Kyle Coleman, as Wilson tweets. A rookie with tight end experience who played at Arkansas State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Coleman will possibly audition at multiple spots in Seattle, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times writes.

49ers Cut Joe Looney, Craig Dahl

The 49ers have informed offensive lineman Joe Looney and safety Craig Dahl that they will be released, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com (Twitter links). As a vested veteran, Dahl will immediately become a free agent, while Looney will have to pass through waivers. The 49ers have since confirmed the moves.

Looney, who turned 25 on Monday, played 15 games for the Niners last season, starting four games and seeing action at all three interior line positions. He entered the preseason as the favorite to start at center for San Francisco this year, but the club has opted to go in another direction, shifting Marcus Martin from guard to center.

Dahl, meanwhile, started 16 games at safety for the Rams in 2012, but has mostly been a special-teamer since joining the 49ers in 2013. San Francisco has a deep group of safeties that includes Antoine Bethea, Eric Reid, Jimmie Ward, and Jaquiski Tartt, making the veteran Dahl expendable.

Defensive lineman Darnell Dockett and linebacker Philip Wheeler are among the other notable players cut today by the Niners. The team also announced that wide receiver Issac Blakeney and offensive lineman Patrick Miller have been waived, reducing the roster count to 69 players.

49ers Sign Nine Undrafted Free Agents

The 49ers have announced their undrafted free agent class for 2015, and the group is very heavy on wideouts. Five of the nine UDFAs whose signings were confirmed today in a press release are receivers, per the team. Here’s the full list:

  • Dres Anderson, WR, Utah ($50K guaranteed, per Brian McIntyre)
  • Issac Blakeney, WR, Duke
  • DiAndre Campbell, WR, Washington
  • Darius Davis, WR, Henderson State
  • Patrick Miller, OL, Auburn
  • Marcus Rush, DL, Michigan State
  • Dylan Thompson, QB, South Carolina ($5K bonus, plus $15K guaranteed salary, per Aaron Wilson)
  • DeAndrew White, WR, Alabama ($32K guaranteed, per McIntyre)
  • Jermaine Whitehead, S, Auburn

Draft Notes: Miller, Philon, McCarthy

Here’s the latest NFL Draft news from Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports on Twitter, unless noted otherwise..

  • Auburn announced that offensive tackle Patrick Miller will enter the draft (link). Miller’s decision comes as quite a surprise and there has been little buzz about him as a 2015 prospect.
  • Arkansas defensive tackle Darius Philon officially declared that he’ll be entering the 2015 draft (link). The 6-foot-2, 272-pound standout totaled 46 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 13 games for the Razorbacks in 2014. The redshirt sophomore is draft eligible because he has completed three years at Arkansas.
  • UCLA defensive lineman Ellis McCarthy is expected to forego his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft (link). McCarthy made a major leap forward in 2014 and he credits his weight loss for that improvement. “Getting the weight off was the biggest thing,” said McCarthy, according to Chris Foster of the Los Angeles Times. “It got my knees feeling better and improved my speed and quickness. It has paid off, but I still need to make progress.”
  • UCF cornerback Jacoby Glenn is expected to forego his remaining college eligibility and enter the NFL Draft (link). Glenn finished the regular season ranked No. 3 in the nation in interceptions (7) and passes defended (18). He was also named the co-defensive player of the year for the American Athletic Conference.
