Eagles Pursuing CB A.J. Bouye
The Eagles are expected to have some money to spend once they drop a few pricey veterans and they are already keying in one of this year’s biggest free agents. The Eagles have interest in Houston cornerback A.J. Bouye, a person familiar with the situation tells Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com. The two sides made contact on Tuesday, the first day of the legal tampering period.
My updated list of this year’s Top 50 Free Agents has Bouye in the No. 1 spot due to his earning potential. I listed the Eagles as a logical landing spot for him as they look to retool their secondary. The Eagles have parted ways with starter Leodis McKelvin and Nolan Carroll could go elsewhere this month. Bouye would represent a major upgrade to Philly’s defense.
Janoris Jenkins‘ deal from last year has been mentioned as a comp for Bouye. He inked a five-year, $62.5MM contract with the Giants which included a staggering $28.8MM fully guaranteed. Bouye is younger than Jenkins was at the time of signing and the cap is higher than last year, so it’s entirely possible he could match.
The former undrafted free agent had arguably his best season in 2016. The 25-year-old finished the campaign with career-highs in tackles (63) and passes defended (16) while also collecting one sack and one interception. Bouye has only missed four games over the past three seasons.
Five Teams In On Terrelle Pryor
Terrelle Pryor is days away from free agency and, as expected, he’ll have a healthy market for his services. The wide receiver is drawing interest from the Giants, 49ers, Eagles, and Titans on the eve of the legal tampering period, sources tell Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. More teams could get involved and, of course, the Browns are working hard to re-sign him.
At this point, the Browns and Pryor are far apart in negotiations, Cabot hears. agent Drew Rosenhaus is looking for Pryor to get paid like one of the top receivers in the NFL. After Rosenhaus blew the ceiling off of the WR market with Antonio Brown‘s new deal, there could be a domino effect that aids the Ohio State product. Still, a deal that puts Pryor in the top five at his position in terms of compensation would be a shocker.
Pryor is firmly in the top tier of available receivers this offseason, along with Alshon Jeffery of the Bears and Kenny Stills of the Dolphins. Our most recent rankings have Pryor as the second-best WR on the market, behind Jeffery and ahead of Stills. Despite Rosenhaus’ ambitions, I still see Stills as having more earning power than Pryor.
The Giants are in the market for a receiver after parting ways with Victor Cruz and a player like Pryor would help deflect attention from star Odell Beckham Jr. Still, I’d be surprised if they were able to keep up with the bidding on him. The Eagles and Titans are logical landing spots since both clubs are also in on Jeffery and a possible Brandin Cooks deal. The 49ers, like the Browns, have lots of cap space to work with.
Kenny Britt On Eagles’ Radar
Connected to several free agent wide receivers this offseason, the Eagles are expected to show interest in Kenny Britt once the legal tampering window opens at 11 a.m. CT on Tuesday, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports.
Philadelphia has been connected to a blockbuster Brandin Cooks trade, a DeSean Jackson reunion, a Pierre Garcon pact and a potential Kenny Stills signing. Britt has not shown the consistency of the first three receivers in this group, and at 28 he’s four years older than Stills, but does not look to cost as much. Cooks looks to require a first-rounder to pry from the Saints, and Jackson and Garcon figure to be $9MM-plus-per-year players. A Britt deal is expected to cost a team between $6-$8MM annually. That would still be a sizable raise for the former first-round pick, but it still represents second-tier money.
Washington is also expected to pursue Britt, being as he would be a cheaper option than Garcon or Jackson.
Making barely $4MM in 2016, Britt broke out on an otherwise anemic Rams passing offense last season, compiling his first 1,000-yard slate. Finishing with 68 receptions for 1,002 yards and five touchdowns, Britt profiles as one of the better UFA wideouts. The ex-Titans first-rounder’s previous season-high mark was 775 back in 2010. Britt also worked with new Eagles wide receivers coach Mike Groh with the Rams last season, helping connect the re-emerging player to Philadelphia.
Per McManus, the Eagles want to pair a big target on the outside with a more elusive performer. Britt profiles as the former type. Philly is also open to dealing Jordan Matthews, whom a previous regime drafted. Matthews led Eagles wideouts with 804 receiving yards, in 13 games, but no other Philly wideout surpassed 400 yards.
Eagles Open To Trading Matthews, Daniel
- Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter) “believes” the Eagles will be open to trading Jordan Matthews if they receive a solid offer. Same goes for quarterback Chase Daniel, who is said to be drawing trade interest. Matthews, 25 in July, was a second-round pick in 2014 under the Chip Kelly administration. Last year, he had 73 catches for 804 yards and three touchdowns, a step back from 2015 when he had 85 catches, 997 yards, and eight scores.
Berman: Eagles Should Draft DE Early
- The Eagles‘ desire for wide receiver and cornerback help has been well-documented, but Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer believes the team would also be well-served in pursuing a pass-rushing defensive end in the early rounds of the draft, especially since this year’s draft class is well-stocked with quality pass rushers. After all, the Eagles are expected to trade or release Connor Barwin, which would leave the team with two 29-year-olds (Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham) rushing the edge and little proven depth behind them.
Eagles Re-Sign ERFA Jaylen Watkins
- The Eagles announced they’ve agreed to terms on a one-year deal with safety Jaylen Watkins.
Eagles Attempted Cooks Trade At 2016 Deadline
The Eagles have been connected to Brandin Cooks for some time. Eyeing the eventual Saints wide receiver in 2014 draft, Philadelphia tried to trade for the speedster before the deadline last year, Jeff McLane of Philly.com reports. Both the Eagles and Titans have been connected to the fourth-year wideout, who will have two more years left on his rookie contract after his fifth-year option is picked up. The Eagles were also connected to 49ers wideout Torrey Smith prior to the 2016 trade deadline. They did not end up making a trade, but wide receiver looms at or near the top of Philly’s wish list going into the 2017 offseason.
Eagles Give Allen Barbre Permission To Seek Trade
A full-time Eagles starter for the past two seasons, Allen Barbre may be on the move after the team gave the veteran lineman permission to seek a trade, Jason Cole of Bleacher Report tweets.
The 32-year-old guard signed a three-year extension with the Eagles prior to the 2014 season, when one year remained on his previous Philadelphia contract. He has one year remaining on his deal, being set to carry a small cap figure of $2.25MM. This could be a sign the Eagles want second-year talent Isaac Seumalo to start at left guard opposite Brandon Brooks, NJ.com’s Eliot Shorr-Parks writes. Seumalo played in nine games as a rookie, starting four.
Barbre’s modest salary and 2016 performance, rating as Pro Football Focus’ No. 23 guard, could make him a reasonably interesting trade piece as a short-term solution. The 10-year veteran will turn 33 in June.
This marks the latest in the Eagles’ attempts to create cap space. They approached Jason Peters about taking a pay cut, but plans to retain him nonetheless, and may still be pondering releasing Jason Kelce. Philly is trying to find a trade partner for Mychal Kendricks as well. The Eagles, who authorized several pricey extensions last year, stand to have $8.6MM in cap room.
Eagles Interested In Paul Worrilow
- Falcons impending free agent linebacker Paul Worrilow has drawn interest from the Patriots, Lions, Eagles and Colts leading up to March 9, relays Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald (Twitter link). The 26-year-old wasn’t much of a factor last season as a member of the NFC champions, with whom he collected one start and 18 tackles in 12 games. But Worrilow did garner significant playing time with the Falcons from 2013-15, when he logged 47 appearances, 42 starts and made between 95 and 143 tackles in each season. Worrilow also totaled four sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions during that three-year span.
- Former Eagles and 49ers head coach Chip Kelly hasn’t been able to find an NFL job this offseason, even as an assistant, and is now trying to break into the media ranks. Kelly auditioned for FOX last week, tweets Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson.
Eagles To Apply Second-Round Tender To Trey Burton
The Eagles will place a $2.81MM second-round tender on restricted free agent tight end Trey Burton, tweets Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. The move will enable Philadelphia to obtain a second-round pick for Burton if he signs elsewhere and the Eagles don’t match the other team’s offer sheet.
Burton, whom the Eagles signed as an undrafted free agent from Florida in 2014, was a statistical non-factor during his first two seasons. He collected just three catches in 31 games in that span, but the Eagles’ reliance on Burton changed significantly last year in a 37-catch, 60-target, 327-yard campaign. Burton also appeared in at least 15 games for the third straight year and picked up the first four starts of his career. It now appears he’ll again join Zach Ertz and Brent Celek to give Philly three capable tight ends in 2017.
In other Eagles news, they’re shopping linebacker Mychal Kendricks and won a coin toss Friday to guarantee themselves the 14th pick in this year’s draft.
