Rams Work Out K Brett Maher
With Greg Zuerlein dealing with a quad injury, the Rams worked out former Cowboys kicker Brett Maher, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.
This Maher audition comes after he traveled to Tennessee for a workout with the Titans, who ended up signing Greg Joseph off the Panthers’ practice squad. Zuerlein has not missed a game this season but missed five in 2018. Sean McVay said earlier this week the Rams would explore kicking options.
Maher had been Dallas’ kicker from the start of last season to earlier this month, but his 10-for-20 connect rate — which included two 60-plus-yarders — prompted the Cowboys to move on. Maher, who also made a 62-yard field goal as a rookie in 2018, made 29 of 36 field goals last season. He was 36-for-36 on PATs in 13 Cowboy games this year.
Last season, the Rams used Cairo Santos and Sam Ficken in Zuerlein’s five-game absence. The All-Pro specialist returned late in the season and made both the game-tying and game-winning field goals to send Los Angeles to the Super Bowl.
This season marks the final year of the 32-year-old kicker’s second NFL contract, with Zuerlein joining Dante Fowler, Michael Brockers, Cory Littleton and Austin Blythe among Rams impending free agents.
Titans Work Out K Brett Maher
Cut late in his second Cowboys season, Brett Maher has surfaced on the workout circuit. The Titans brought in the young kicker for a Thursday audition, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
Maher made just 20 of 30 field goals this season, but two of those makes came from beyond 60 yards. The Titans have kicker Ryan Succop finishing out his sixth season with the franchise.
If signed, Maher could be a practice squad developmental project or an insurance option. However, Tennessee’s roster already houses both Succop and Ryan Santoso, who handles kickoffs for the team. Succop missed the first half of the Titans’ season due to injury and has made just 1 of 5 field goals upon returning. Maher’s leg strength is certainly not in question, so he would eliminated the need to have two kickers on the active roster.
A UDFA out of Nebraska, Maher also connected on a 60-plus-yard field goal as a rookie. Despite first kicking in an NFL game last season, the 30-year-old spent time on NFL rosters as far back as 2013 but did his pre-Cowboys in-game work with multiple CFL franchises.
Cowboys Waive Brett Maher, Sign Kai Forbath
The Cowboys are making a change at kicker. Dallas has waived Brett Maher and is signing Kai Forbath, per a team announcement.
In the wake of Maher’s struggles in 2019, the Cowboys worked out three kickers last week, but they elected to give Maher another shot. Unfortunately, Maher missed a field goal attempt in the team’s loss to the Bears on Thursday, so Dallas hosted another workout today. Forbath was obviously one of the three kickers the team brought in, along with Nick Rose and Tristan Vizcaino (Rose and Vizcaino were also part of last week’s audition).
Forbath has much more experience than his fellow tryout candidates, which obviously appeals to the Cowboys. Over parts of seven seasons with five different clubs, Forbath has a strong 85.8% success rate on field goal attempts. He kicked for the Patriots last week as a one-game fill-in for Nick Folk, making a 23-yard field goal attempt and going 1-2 on extra points.
Maher, meanwhile, hits the waiver wire after he was unable to replicate his solid 2018 performance. He converted just 66.7% of his field goal tries in 2019, and he missed all but one of his five tries from 40-49 yards. The Cowboys, in the thick of a division title race, exercised as much patience as they could but ultimately were compelled to move on.
Cowboys Making Kicker Change?
Brett Maher could be out of a job, head coach Jason Garrett said in an interview on 105.3 The Fan (Twitter link via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News). His comments came hours after Maher missed yet another field goal in Thursday night’s loss to the Bears.
“Obviously, we have to do a close evaluation of it,” Garrett said. “We brought three kickers in earlier in the week. We decided to give Brett an opportunity this week. It didn’t work out. So we have to take a real close, hard look at that.”
The Cowboys’ previous tryout featured former Chargers and Redskin kicker Nick Rose, Austin MacGinnis, and Tristan Vizcaino. From the sound of it, the Cowboys will look into other options if they bump Maher.
The Cowboys’ season is now on the brink and while there’s plenty of blame to go around, Maher’s struggles haven’t helped matters. He’s connected on just 66.7% of his attempts this year, well below his 80.6% success rate in 2018.
