Titans Place Logan Ryan On IR

It’s official now. On Tuesday, the Titans placed cornerback Logan Ryan on season-ending injured reserve.

Ryan suffered a broken fibula on Sunday, which automatically 86’d him for the season. It’s a bad blow for the Titans, who are still fighting for a playoff spot with two games remaining in the regular season. Through 15 weeks of action, the 27-year-old had a career high of four sacks plus 76 tackles and eight passes defensed.

Without Ryan, the Titans will need some vintage performances from Malcolm Butler and quality support from reserves Leshaun Sims and Joshua Kalu. Adoree’ Jackson, who is having the best season of any Titans corner, now stands as the club’s unquestioned CB1.

To help fill the void, the Titans promoted cornerback Kenneth Durden from the practice squad to the active roster. Durden, 26, appeared in five games for the Titans earlier this year, and those contests represent the entirety of his NFL experience.

The Titans, without Ryan, face the Redskins this week before a crucial showdown with the Colts in Week 17.

Titans CB Logan Ryan Suffers Broken Fibula

Titans cornerback Logan Ryan announced that he suffered a broken fibula on Sunday (Twitter link). The injury will shut him down for the final two games of the season and the playoffs, should the Titans make it, but he vows to come back strong in 2019.

Ryan joined the Titans on a three-year, $30MM contract prior to the 2017 season and has been a fixture in the starting lineup ever since. This year, the 27-year-old recorded a career high of four sacks to go along with his 76 tackles and eight passes defensed. He presently ranks as the No. 38 ranked cornerback in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, which isn’t too far behind teammate Adoree’ Jackson.

Without Ryan, the Titans will lean more on fellow ex-Patriot Malcolm Butler. Leshaun Sims and Joshua Kalu are also on hand for support, but the Titans will probably add another CB to bolster their depth.

The Titans kept their playoff hopes alive on Sunday with their 17-0 victory over the Giants. They now have a 46% chance of making the playoffs and are still clinging to an 8% chance of overtaking the Texans for the divisional lead, according to FiveThirtyEight. They don’t technically control their own destiny, but wins over the Redskins and Colts would probably give them a Wild Card spot.

Titans Place RT Jack Conklin On IR

The Titans have formally placed right tackle Jack Conklin on injured reserve, according to a team announcement. The club also officially placed tight end Jonnu Smith on IR.

Both Conklin and Smith went down in Thursday night’s game against the Jaguars. For Smith, the seriousness of the injury was readily apparent – the Titans learned on Friday that he would be sidelined for the year with a severe MCL injury. However, the Titans were hoping to get Conklin back on the field for the postseason, should they qualify.

Conklin, the No. 8 pick in the 2016 draft, played in every possible regular season game over the first two years of his career before going down with a torn ACL in the Titans’ divisional round loss to the Patriots. That injury cost Conklin time this year, as he missed the first three games of the season before returning in Week 4. Since then, Conklin played nearly every snap for Tennessee (save for Week 5 when he suffered a concussion), grading as the NFL’s No. 42 offensive tackle among 78 qualifiers in the process, per Pro Football Focus.

Unfortunately, Conklin’s knee issue will keep him out of action the rest of the way. The Titans, meanwhile, still have a 34% chance of reaching the playoffs, according to FiveThirtyEight.

To fill the gaps, the Titans signed tight end Cole Wick off of the 49ers’ practice squad and signed veteran offensive lineman Austin Pasztor.

Titans OT Jack Conklin To Miss Time

Titans offensive tackle Jack Conklin is expected to miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a knee injury against the Jaguars on Thursday night, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). If Tennessee secures a postseason berth, Coklin has a chance to return for the playoffs.

The Titans have roughly a one-in-four chance of making the playoffs, per Five Thirty Eight. Although the Texans lost today, they’re still the overwhelming favorites to win the AFC South, so Tennessee will have to compete for the sixth wild card slot in the AFC. The Titans are one of several contenders for the No. 6 spot that has at least a 10% chance of heading to the postseason, including the Ravens, Colts, and Dolphins.

Conklin, the eighth overall selection in the 2016 draft, played in all 32 regular season games over the first two seasons of his career before going down with a torn ACL in the Titans’ divisional round loss to the Patriots in January. That injury cost Conklin time in 2018, as he missed the first three games of the year before returning in Week 4. Since then, Conklin had played nearly every snap for Tennessee (save for Week 5 when he suffered a concussion), grading as the NFL’s No. 42 offensive tackle among 78 qualifiers in the process, per Pro Football Focus.

With Conklin ailing, the Titans will turn to seventh-year pro Dennis Kelly at right tackle. Originally acquired in exchange for wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham in 2016, Kelly has appeared in 40 games and made nine starts over the past two-plus years.

Titans TE Jonnu Smith Done For Year

Titans tight end Jonnu Smith is going to miss the rest of the season with an MCL injury, a source tells ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Smith, 23, went down while blocking for Derrick Henry on his historic 99-yard touchdown run and the injury proved to be serious. He’ll be placed on injured reserve this week in order to open up a spot on the roster.

Smith has largely been utilized as a blocker in Tennessee, though he has flashed his hands on occasion. In a November loss to the Colts, Smith had six grabs for 44 yards. He also scored three touchdowns during the month of November. His season ends with 20 catches for 258 yards and three TDs,

Smith, a third-round pick in the 2017 draft, has two more years to go on his rookie contract. He’s scheduled to count for $845K next season and $933K in 2020, the final year of his deal.

The Titans kept their playoff hopes alive with Thursday’s win, thanks in large part to an all-time great performance from Henry. They currently have a 27% chance of reaching the postseason, according to Five Thirty Eight, with a pair of winnable matchups on deck against the Giants and Redskins.
