Chiefs Notes: Nagy, Nicolas
- Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is considered a “hot name” in NFL circles and could be a head coaching candidate in 2018, according to Michael Lombardi of the Ringer (Twitter link). Nagy doesn’t call plays in Kansas City (head coach Andy Reid handles that duty), but the 39-year-old has helped orchestrate an exotic offense that’s featured career-best performance from quarterback Alex Smith and excellent contributions from young players such as Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill. At present, the Chiefs ranks third in offensive DVOA, fifth in yards, and fifth in scoring.
- Linebacker Dadi Nicolas (Chiefs) and cornerback Demetri Goodson (Packers) have both begun practicing and now have a 21-day window during which they can be activated from the physically unable to perform list, according to veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer (Twitter links). As Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star writes, the Chiefs are dealing with a number of injuries at linebacker, meaning Nicolas — who appeared in 11 games a season ago — could provide depth. Goodson made three starts for Green Bay in 2016 before going down with a torn ACL.

Chiefs Mulled Claiming TE Martellus Bennett
The Chiefs contemplated putting in a waiver claim for tight end Martellus Bennett after he was cut by the Packers last week, according to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star.
“We looked at that as a potential (move),” head coach Andy Reid said. “(But) he’s in a good place. It worked out good for him.”
Bennett, of course, was eventually claimed by the Patriots, but his presence in Kansas City would have been an interesting proposition. Like New England, the Chiefs boast one of the league’s best tight ends (Travis Kelce), so Bennett wouldn’t have been an immediate starter. More likely, he would’ve taken the role of third-stringer Ross Travis , who’s played only 70 total snaps in 2017, joining Demetrius Harris as Kelce’s backups.
Bennett’s salary wouldn’t have been a problem for the Chiefs in 2017, as any club could have absorbed the remainder of Bennett’s $900K base. But Bennett’s 2018 salary would have almost certainly led Kansas City to release Bennett before the start of next season, as the Chiefs currently project to have fewer than $2MM in 2018 cap space.
Reid didn’t elaborate on Kansas City’s decision to not place a claim on Bennett, but the club likely had reservations about Bennett’s injured shoulder. The Patriots were the only team to put a claim in on Bennett, but the NFL doesn’t plan to investigate the veteran tight end’s reunion with New England.

Chiefs Sign Cam Thomas
The Chiefs moved quickly to replace Roy Miller. The team has signed fellow defensive tackle Cam Thomas, Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
Thomas offers familiarity with the Chiefs’ 3-4 scheme after spending training camp with the team. He missed out on the chance to serve as Bennie Logan‘s top backup, but he’s back in that spot following Miller’s arrest for domestic battery.
Thomas, 30, has bounced around the league since being selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Chargers. The North Carolina product has served mostly as a reserve nose tackle and started only 27 games in seven NFL seasons. In 2016, he appeared in 16 games (two starts) for the Rams, compiling 15 tackles and one sack.
Thomas could see his first real action with KC on Sunday when the Chiefs take on the Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Chiefs Release DT Roy Miller
The Chiefs announced that they have released defensive tackle Roy Miller. Miller was arrested for domestic battery on Saturday in Florida.
Miller was taken to Duval County jail early Saturday morning after policy say he left a woman with a minor injury. While the situation sorts itself out, the Chiefs have decided to distance themselves from the veteran.
Miller, 30, made 50 starts for the Jaguars from 2013 through 2016. However, after an injury-shortened season, the Jaguars didn’t show much interest in retaining him. He landed with KC in August, but he wasn’t playing a whole lot for the Chiefs. In seven games this year, Miller was on the field for 77 snaps.
With Miller out of the picture, the Chiefs will probably look for a new nose tackle to help support starter Bennie Logan.

Chiefs DT Roy Miller Arrested On Domestic Battery Charge
Chiefs defensive lineman Roy Miller was arrested on a domestic battery charge in Jacksonville on Saturday, the Associated Press reports.
Miller was taken to Duval County (Fla.) jail early Saturday morning. The AP reports this alleged incident involved a minor injury. The veteran defensive tackle was scheduled to appear before a judge later today.
The Chiefs, who are on a bye week, are aware of the situation but are gathering information on it, declining comment, per the AP. Kansas City signed the 30-year-old defensive tackle over the summer. Prior to this season, Miller spent all eight of his NFL campaigns in Florida — four with the Buccaneers and the next four with the Jaguars.
A perennial starter with the Bucs and Jags from 2012-16, Miller has worked as a rotational player with the Chiefs. He’s played 77 snaps in seven games this season.
