Patriots Lose RB Jeremy Hill For Season

Jeremy Hill‘s hopes at rebounding and establishing himself with the Patriots this season endured a crushing blow in Week 1.

The fifth-year running back suffered a torn ACL during New England’s win over Houston, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter). Hill will miss the rest of the season.

A sequence involving Hill trying to make a tackle after a Rob Gronkowski fumble resulted in the injury that will end the former second-round pick’s season. Hill was down for several minutes after the play. Prior to that sequence, however, Hill played well. He gained 25 rushing yards on four carries and caught a pass. His highlight of his ultimately brief 2018 season was blocking a punt in the Pats’ 27-20 win.

Hill signed with the Patriots after his stock trended down as his Bengals run concluded. He received just 37 carries last season and played in just seven games, an injury bringing an early end to his Cincinnati game work. The former 1,100-yard rusher was a full-time player during his previous three seasons with the Bengals.

He signed a one-year deal with the Patriots and will end up collecting his $1MM salary, per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, who adds that Hill had $281K tied up in additional per-game roster bonuses (Twitter link).

The Patriots’ running back corps has seen some eventful happenings in 2018. Dion Lewis, Mike Gillislee and Brandon Bolden are no longer part of the equation, and Sony Michel suffered an injury that wiped out most of his training camp. The Patriots released Gillislee after Hill had beaten him out for the team’s big-back role during the preseason, leading Gillislee to the Saints. James White and Rex Burkhead remain healthy, however, and will continue to be counted on as reliable cogs in this evolving committee.

Dez Bryant Interested In Joining Patriots, Redskins

Dez Bryant has now rejected a pair of contracts, and he’s indicated that he’s willing to wait until he receives the right offer. While it’s uncertain if that offer will ever materialize, the wideout hinted this evening that he has at least two teams on his radar.

When asked on Twitter if he’d be willing to sign back with the Cowboys, Bryant said he could instead envision a role with the Patriots or Redskins.

“Naw I’m ok,” Bryant said. “I rather go somewhere I can show case my skills for real.. if I line up next to Gronk hogan Edelman I’m for sure getting a 1 on 1 match up plus I won’t be getting criticized controlled for expressing my love for the game..Washington is cool as well.”

Later, the wideout made it clear that he wasn’t “making a pitch.” However, the tweets could be somewhat telling. We’re still not entirely sure exactly what Dez is seeking from his next destination, as he’s already turned down long-term security (via Baltimore) and a clear path to playing time (via Cleveland).

We could assume that the star receiver is looking for a proper “fit” when it comes to joining his next team. While it’s uncertain is either the Patriots or Redskins would come knocking, we at least know a contract could actually materialize should they show interest in the 29-year-old.

The Patriots depth at wide receiver is clearly lacking, although they managed to get a win today thanks to tight end Rob Gronkowski, receiver Phillip Dorsett, and running back James White. With Chris Hogan in the picture and Julian Edelman set to return, it’s uncertain if New England would be willing to take a flyer on Bryant. If they were to have interest, the team presumably would have already had him for a workout during the offseason or preseason.

The Redskins offense also looked plenty competent on Sunday. While top receiver Josh Doctson didn’t play much of a role, the team still got plenty of production out of running back Chris Thompson and tight end Jordan Reed.

Patriots Notes: Gronk, McDaniels, Guerrero

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (video link) passes along a couple of interesting items this morning regarding several key faces in the Patriots’ locker room. While we knew that New England had indeed attempted to trade star tight end Rob Gronkowski this offseason, Rapoport says that those trade talks were “intense” and that the Pats were actually close to dealing Gronk at one point. However, Rapoport reports that Gronkowski then stepped in and adamantly informed the front office that he would either retire or remain with the Patriots, but that he would not go anywhere else. At that point, Rapoport says, trade talks were scrapped and, as we know, the team sweetened Gronk’s contract late last month.

Let’s take a look at a few more notes out of Foxborough as the Pats get set to kick off the 2018 campaign:

  • In response to Rapoport’s discussion about Gronkowski this morning, Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston revisited a report of his own (video link) in which he indicated that the Patriots did talk with several clubs about a Gronkowski trade. However, Curran says interest in Gronk was more tepid than one might think — in contrast to Rapoport’s report that the Pats almost had a deal in place — and that Tom Brady informed the team that he would not play if his top tight end was dealt.
  • In the same report linked above, Rapoport says that one reason OC Josh McDaniels left the Colts at the altar this offseason is because the Patriots gave him a five-year contract — which is largely unheard of for a coordinator — and that the contract pays McDaniels like a first-time head coach. In fact, Rapoport says that McDaniels is by far the highest-paid coordinator in the league, and his contract will eventually pay him over $4MM per year.
  • The role of Brady’s personal trainer, Alex Guerrero, has been one of the sources of conflict between Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, as we explained earlier this year. However, Rapoport reports that a compromise on Guerrero’s role has been reached. Under the terms of the compromise, Brady and Gronkowski may use Guerrero’s services when they so choose, and Guerrero has “solid” access to Gillette Stadium. Guerrero may also travel with the team, though Rapoport says he is unlikely to travel as much as he did in the past. The most important thing for all sides is that they do not publicly discuss the Guerrero issue in the future, and Rapoport no longer expects the trainer’s role to be a major storyline.
  • The Bills claimed punter Corey Bojorquez  off waivers from the Patriots last week even though Bojorquez never punted in a preseason game. Bojorquez’s lack of game usage was somewhat surprising given that he was seen as a legitimate threat to unseat incumbent punter Ryan Allen, but Mike Reiss of ESPN.com says the team may have been trying to “hide” Bojorquez so that he could clear waivers and return to the Pats’ practice squad, which Bojorquez himself appeared to confirm.
  • Reiss also passes along a couple of notes on the Patriots’ two newest practice squad players, WR Jace Billingsley and T Eric Smith. Reiss says that the team had interest in signing Billingsley to the practice squad last year — he ultimately chose to remain in Detroit on the Lions’ taxi squad — and that the Pats are paying Smith $20K per week (instead of the standard $7,600) because they coveted tackle depth and needed to give him a compelling reason to come to Foxborough.

Rob Gronkowski Satisfied With Contract

It didn’t weigh on me at all,” Gronkowski said of his near-offseason-long negotiations with the Pats (via NESN.com). “Everything’s always in the works. Nothing’s just going to happen in a day, something like that. It’s in the past now. It happened last week, so it’s go time now.”

The Patriots will need Gronkowski plenty while Julian Edelman sits and a thin receiving corps attempts to become a reliable source for Tom Brady targets. Here’s the latest from the Pats’ rivals:

Rob Gronkowski‘s contract has come up in several news cycles in recent years, the all-world tight end still being attached to a deal he signed back in 2012. But the future Hall of Fame Patriots pass-catcher said he wasn’t agonizing over the team adjusting his deal, which it did for the second straight year via incentive package. Gronk did sit out the voluntary portion of New England’s offseason program and considered retirement, but he says the drama’s in the past as he prepares for his ninth NFL season.

The Patriots will need Gronkowski plenty while Julian Edelman sits and a thin receiving corps attempts to become a reliable source for Tom Brady targets. Here’s the latest from the Pats’ rivals:

  • The Dolphins submitted an unsuccessful waiver claim for a Bills cut, linebacker Tanner Vallejo, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald notes. Vallejo ended up in Cleveland because of the Browns’ top waiver priority position, one they’ve used frequently over the past week. Miami also wanted to keep two of their own cuts — running back Buddy Howell and tackle Eric Smith — but saw the former land with the Texans via waiver claim and the latter end up choosing to sign with the Patriots’ practice squad instead of the Dolphins’.

Patriots To Place CB Duke Dawson On IR

Two of the Patriots’ top three picks are now set to be on IR. Second-round pick Duke Dawson will join Isaiah Wynn on the injured list, according to ESPN.com’ Field Yates (on Twitter).

The Patriots will promote wide receiver Riley McCarron from their practice squad, per Yates. A hamstring injury will send Dawson to IR.

Dawson was set to be one of New England’s reserve cornerbacks and was seeing time in the slot during the preseason. New England still has five cornerbacks on its active roster, six if cornerback/safety Jason McCourty is counted.

Five of the nine Patriots 2018 draftees — Wynn, Dawson, linebacker Christian Sam, wideout Braxton Berrios and tight end Ryan Izzo — are on IR. Only Dawson can return, since he was moved there after being carried through to New England’s 53-man roster.

Patriots Work Out WR Kendall Wright

The Patriots hosted wide receiver Kendall Wright and a host of other free agents for workouts on Wednesday, reports Mike Reiss of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

New England currently only has four wide receivers on its roster (excluding special-teamer Matthew Slater), and the club is counting on Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson, and the recently-claimed Chad Hansen to shoulder the load until Julian Edelman returns from suspension in Week 5. In addition to Hansen, the Patriots claimed former Seahawks pass-catcher Amara Darboh off waivers on Sunday, but waived him with an injury designation on Tuesday.

Wright inked a one-year, $1MM deal with the Vikings this spring that contained $400K guaranteed, but he was cut loose on Sunday. Scheduled to be Minnesota’s slot receiver between Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, Wright was beaten out by former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell for a starting spot. Given his lack of special teams prowess, Wright didn’t hold much appeal as a reserve for Minnesota.

That Wright doesn’t play special teams (he has only four career ST snaps) could present a problem for his chances to earn a Patriots roster spot, as well, but New England’s dire need for receiving weapons could trump Wright’s weakness on teams. A former first-round pick, Wright spent five years with the Titans before landing with the Bears in 2017. The lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal passing attack, Wright posted a team-leading 59 receptions and 614 yards in his only season with Chicago.

Here’s the full list of free agents that were on hand for New England today, per Reiss:

Patriots To Re-Sign OL Brian Schwenke

Brian Schwenke will rejoin the Patriots after a brief stay as a free agent. The Pats re-signed the veteran interior offensive lineman, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com tweets.

Schwenke will take the roster spot of wide receiver Amara Darboh, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com reports (via Twitter). The Patriots claimed Darboh off waivers from the Seahawks, but the 2017 third-round pick will be waived two days later with an injury designation. He’ll revert to New England’s IR if unclaimed on waivers this time around.

Darboh will undergo an unspecified surgery on Tuesday, Garafolo adds. This will again deplete the Patriots’ depth at wideout. Only Chris Hogan, Coradarrelle Patterson, Phillip Dorsett and the recently claimed Chad Hansen reside as healthy Pats receivers at this point.

New England made Schwenke one of its weekend cuts but will reinstall him as an interior-line backup. He joins LaAdrian Waddle and Ted Karras as a second-string lineman.

A five-year Titans cog, Schwenke initially caught on with the Patriots when he signed in late July. While his roster spot is obviously not secure, Schwenke stands to slot in behind David Andrews and guards Joe Thuney and Shaq Mason.

Since beginning his career as a starter, the 27-year-old blocker’s been a backup for the past two seasons. Injuries essentially brought an end to his starting days, with the former 2013 fourth-round pick missing 23 games over his first three seasons. But he suited up for 16 Titans regular-season games in each of the past two years.
