New Orleans Saints News & Rumors

Saints Sign Ryan Groy, Release Derek Newton

The Saints signed center Ryan Groy and safety Terrell Williams, according to a team announcement. In related moves, the club released guard Mike Herndon wide receiver Micah Wright, and tackle Derek Newton

Groy, 29 in September, spent the last four years with the Bills and made 14 starts over the last three seasons. The Bills kept him from joining the Rams by matching his offer sheet a couple of years ago, but they did not make a strong push to retain him this time around.

Newton, meanwhile, is being bumped to make room for new arrival Marshall Newhouse. The longtime starter for the Texans hasn’t been the same since he tore both patellar tendons in a 2016 game against the Broncos. He tried to rekindle his career with the Saints, but he leaves the team after suiting up for just one game.

Saints To Sign Marshall Newhouse

The Saints are set to sign offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM (on Twitter). Newhouse auditioned alongside fellow tackle Adam Bisnowaty and center/guard Ryan Groy on Tuesday and made a strong impression on the team. Caplan adds that the Saints could still sign one more offensive lineman, so the door could still be open for Bisnowaty or Groy in New Orleans.

The Bills shipped Newhouse to the Panthers in September for a conditional 2021 seventh-round pick. He went on to appear in eleven games for the Saints, but started in only two of those contests. That marked a big change from 2017, when he started in all 14 of his contests for the Raiders. Over the course of his eight-year career, Newhouse has started in 72 games for the Packers, Bengals, Giants, Raiders, Bills, and Panthers.

The Saints project to start Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk at the tackle spots with support from veteran Jermon Bushrod. Newhouse probably has decent odds to make the cut following Wednesday’s release of Derek Newton.

Saints Sign DE Wes Horton

Wes Horton has found a new home. The veteran defensive end has signed with the Saints, reports ESPN’s Adam Caplan (via Twitter).

The former undrafted free agent out of USC had spent his entire six-year career with the Panthers. After starting 27 games through his first four years in the NFL, Horton transitioned to more of a backup role in 2017 and 2018. This past season, the 29-year-old compiled 24 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 16 games. Pro Football Focus wasn’t particularly fond of his performance, as they ranked Horton 102nd among 103 edge defenders.

In New Orleans, Horton will be joining a talented defensive end corps that includes All-Pro Cameron Jordan, All-Rookie Marcus Davenport, and free agent addition Mario Edwards Jr.. Horton will likely be competing with the likes of Trey Hendrickson for reserve snaps.

Saints Sign DT Sylvester Williams

The Saints have signed defensive tackle Sylvester Williams, according to a team announcement. The former first-round pick auditioned for the Saints way back in October and showed enough during this month’s rookie minicamp to earn a deal.

Williams was an All-American at North Carolina, which helped him become a first round pick of the Broncos back in 2013. Williams spent the first four years of his career with Denver, but didn’t have his fifth-year option picked up. He signed a three-year pact with the Titans, but was released after just one year. After stops in Detroit and Miami, he’ll try to get back on track in New Orleans.

Between Miami and Detroit, Williams appeared in 14 games last season, including four starts. He’s managed to be a decent run-stuffer in the past, and is still only 30. The Saints had one of the league’s best defensive lines and run defenses last year, but standout defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins tore his Achilles right at the end of the year, so Williams could offer some value as a depth addition.

Sylvester Williams Gets Try Out From Saints

A former big name is resurfacing this week. Defensive tackle Sylvester Williams is joining the Saints’ rookie minicamp as a tryout player.

Williams was an All-American at North Carolina, which helped him become a first round pick of the Broncos back in 2013. Williams spent the first four years of his career with Denver, but didn’t have his fifth-year option picked up. He signed a three-year pact with the Titans, but was released after just one year.

He then got a one-year, $3.5MM deal from the Lions, but he was released in October of last year. He then signed with the Dolphins and spent the remainder of the season in Miami. The Saints worked him out last year after Detroit cut him, so there’s some familiarity there.

Between Miami and Detroit he appeared in 14 games last season, making four starts. He’s managed to be a decent run-stuffer in the past, and is still only 30. The Saints had one of the league’s best defensive lines and run defenses last year, but standout defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins tore his Achilles right at the end of the year. He might not be ready for next season, and the Saints could use some depth. It wouldn’t be shocking if Williams were signed after the minicamp.

Minor NFL Transactions: 5/10/19

We’ve got a whole bunch of minor transactions from today as we head into the weekend:

Arizona Cardinals

  • Signed: RB Wes Hills, CB Nate Brooks
  • Released: WR Bryant Mitchell, CB Jonathan Moxey, RB Brandon Wilds

Houston Texans

New Orleans Saints

  • Waived: RB Martez Carter, LB Chase Hansen, TE Jake Powell

Philadelphia Eagles

  • Signed: CB Jay Liggins

Seattle Seahawks

Oakland Raiders

  • Signed: WR Brian Burt

Orchard, the former second round pick of the Browns, is probably the biggest name on this list. He was cut to make room for Ziggy Ansah, who the Seahawks officially announced today. Orchard had signed a one-year pact last month that didn’t contain any guaranteed money. It’s a pretty bad sign for his NFL future that he was apparently at the very bottom of the 90-man roster in Seattle.
