Drew Brees Not Planning To Test Market

Drew Brees is scheduled to reach free agency in March and could potentially cash in on the open market. However, Brees sounds inclined to sign a new deal with the Saints before the new league year begins on March 14.

“I’m not in the mood to make anything secretive,” Brees said. “It’s the same way I felt two days ago. It’s the same way I felt 12 years ago. That is that I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me, hopefully.”

Few expected Brees to leave the Saints this offseason, but it’s surprising to hear Brees dismiss the idea of at least testing free agency. If Brees signs an extension without collecting offers from suitors, he could be leaving significant money on the table. Then again, Brees already has nearly $200MM in NFL earnings to his credit, so getting top dollar is not a priority for him. Instead, it sounds like Brees – who turned 39 on Monday – would prefer to return to the Saints for a shot at another Super Bowl ring without uprooting his family.

The Super Bowl XLIV MVP could have been in line for another championship appearance if not for last week’s Minneapolis Miracle. Brees had another spectacular season in 2017, finishing out with a league-high 72.0% completion rate and 7.53 yards per passing attempt. After earning his eleventh career Pro Bowl nod, the veteran is showing no signs of slowing down.

Saints Place Andrus Peat On IR

The Saints have placed left guard Andrus Peat on injured reserve. Peat will not be able to play in Sunday’s divisional round game against the Vikings or in the NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl, should the Saints make it.

Peat suffered a broken fibula against the Panthers last weekend and had to be carted off of the field. Losing the third-year pro stings for New Orleans, particularly after losing Zach Strief early in the season. Senio Kelemete, who subbed in for Peat’s against Carolina, is expected to get the start.

Peat’s played both guard and tackle with the Saints since being taken No. 13 overall in 2015. Over the last two years, he has missed just two regular season games.

Saints’ Andrus Peat Breaks Fibula

The Saints lost a key player to injury during their strong first-half performance against the Panthers, with Andrus Peat being carted off.

New Orleans’ left guard suffered a broken fibula, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter). The third-year talent will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine if there is ligament damage.

This represents another blow to a Saints offensive front that already lost Zach Strief early in the season and has seen Terron Armstead battle injuries as well. While New Orleans has received quality work from its offensive front, with first-round pick Ryan Ramczyk proving to be a quick study at right tackle, it will have to compensate for Peat now.

Peat’s played both guard and tackle with the Saints since being taken No. 13 overall in 2015 and played in 15 Saints games this season, missing one because of a groin injury. He started 15 games in 2016. Senio Kelemete took Peat’s place at left guard.

Mark Ingram Will Not Become A Free Agent This Offseason

The NFL All-pro team was released today, but Saints running back Mark Ingram was not on it. Voters instead opted for Rams third-year playmaker Todd Gurley in the running back spot and the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell in the “flex” position. Without the All-pro designation, Ingram will not become a free agent this offseason, points out Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). The veteran back had a clause in his contract that if he were to make the All-pro team, he would be released from his current deal and test the open market in a few months.

Ingram, 28, has seen his career take off in the past two years. The former 2011 first round pick has rushed for over a combined 2,100 yards in 2016-2017. He had a career-high 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season in New Orleans. Despite being older for running back standards, Ingram would have likely gotten a raise over his $4MM base salary for 2018.

By slightly missing out on the designation, he will remain with the team that drafted him for one more season. While unfortunate for the veteran back, this is certainly good news for the Saints considering that Ingram seems to have a lot of tread left on the tires. He should continue to be an extremely formidable backfield partner to breakout rookie running back Alvin Kamara.
