Patriots To Sign Kendrick Bourne

5:58pm: The Pats have a deal with Bourne. They are signing the former 49ers receiver to a three-year, $22.5MM pact, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. While Bourne and Nelson Agholor are not on the top tier of available wideouts, they are off the market as part of New England’s receiver-retooling effort.

4:16pm: Usually fairly restrained early in free agency periods, the Patriots have been active on Day 1 of the legal tampering period. They are now moving toward a deal with 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com tweets.

Multiple teams have made offers to Bourne, per Fowler, but he and the Pats are discussing terms at this juncture. Bourne would represent a notable add to a receiver room in dire need of 2021 contributors.

New England has given either Cam Newton (or a to-be-determined QB1) Jonnu Smith and added Matt Judon and Jalen Mills to its defense. Bourne would be the team’s first wideout addition this offseason. The Pats have been in transition at this spot for multiple seasons, so Bourne would be a welcome signing.

Despite missing time because of COVID-19 last season and the 49ers having lost Jimmy Garoppolo for much of the slate, Bourne emerged with his most productive year. He caught 49 passes for 667 yards and two touchdowns. During San Francisco’s 2019 NFC championship season, Bourne played a key role but took a backseat to the likes of George Kittle, Emmanuel Sanders and Deebo Samuel in the 49ers’ aerial hierarchy.

COVID-19 Latest: Chiefs, 49ers, Ravens

The NFL has not needed to adjust its schedule since Week 7, though Division I-FBS certainly has. But more teams are dealing with COVID-19 issues over the past several days. Here is the latest on this NFL season’s defining subject:

  • The Chiefs asked the NFL and NFLPA to conduct an investigation after a recent meeting involved a union rep speaking to the entire Chiefs roster without wearing a mask, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The unnamed union rep is not subject to the same testing the players are, which prompted the Chiefs’ concern after the meeting, Schefter adds (on Twitter). The NFLPA has addressed this matter, per Terez Paylor of Yahoo.com (on Twitter).
  • Iman Marshall tested positive for the coronavirus Thursday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports. He becomes the second Ravens defensive back to test positive in two weeks, following Marlon Humphrey. The latter’s positive test resulted in several Baltimore defenders missing each Ravens practice last week. Marshall, however, cannot play this season due to the Ravens placing him on IR in August. The Ravens announced the infected player, without identifying him, had no high-risk close contacts among the team. Humphrey is no longer on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.
  • Kendrick Bourne‘s positive test decimated the 49ers‘ receiving corps last week, but an NFL investigation found the team to be compliant with COVID-19 protocols. They will not be punished, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. As for Bourne, he has endured a complicated several days. After testing negative twice and being removed from the 49ers’ reserve/COVID-19 list, he tested positive again and was back on it Monday. He has tested negative this week, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area notes. If Bourne were cleared to make the trip to New Orleans, he would do so after missing most or all of this week’s 49ers practices.
  • The NFL placed the Eagles in its intensive COVID protocols after a coach tested positive, Tim McManus of ESPN.com notes. While Philadelphia’s facility remains open, all Eagles meetings this week will be conducted virtually.
  • A Bengals practice squad player tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. The Bengals placed cornerbacks Brian Allen and Winston Rose on their practice squad COVID list. The team currently has five players — Allen, Rose, Trae Waynes (on IR), Margus Hunt and offensive lineman Fred Johnson — on its reserve/COVID list going into its game against Pittsburgh. The Steelers currently have five players — Ben Roethlisberger, Vance McDonald, Vince Williams, Jaylen Samuels and offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins — on their COVID list.

49ers’ Kendrick Bourne Tests Negative

49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is now eligible to return. After his COVID-19 positive on Wednesday, Bourne has received two consecutive COVID-19 negatives (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo). In addition, fellow wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel have also been the greenlight, along with left tackle Trent Williams. 

Bourne was one of several 49ers players held out of Thursday night’s game due to protocols. Playing shorthanded, the Niners lost 34-17. Bourne’s latest results seem to point to a false positive on the first test, and his camp is predictably miffed.

“It’s frustrating because Kendrick has been really responsible with everything,” agent Henry Organ said. “He’s taken COVID-19 very seriously. It’s not a joke to him.”

Through eight games this year, Bourne has caught 25 passes for 352 yards and one touchdown. His last outing was his best yet — Bourne registered eight grabs for 81 yards against the Seahawks, making the most out of his ten targets.

With their roster largely restocked, Bourne and the 49ers will turn their attention to the Saints, following their bye week.

COVID-19 Positive Closes 49ers Facility

The 49ers have closed their team facility after receiving their latest COVID-19 test results, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne has tested positive for the coronavirus and it’s not immediately clear whether he’s the only player to do so. 

This news comes just one day before the 49ers’ scheduled game against the Packers. At this moment, the game is still slated to go ahead as scheduled at Levi’s Stadium.

The NFL continues to grapple with COVID-19 positives and protocols in place to protect its employees. On Tuesday, Broncos GM John Elway and CEO Joe Ellis both learned of new positive tests that will keep them away from the club in the coming days. Meanwhile, Packers running back AJ Dillon has already been ruled out for this week due to his test results. Dillon was also in close contact with fellow RB Jamaal Williams and linebacker Kamal Martin, sending them to the reserve list.

During the preseason, the Niners placed wide receiver Richie James Jr., running back Jeff Wilson Jr. and linebacker Fred Warner on the COVID-19 list. Today’s news marks their first positive test since the start of the regular season.

49ers Mulling Kendrick Bourne, Raheem Mostert Extensions

The 49ers have discussed extensions for running back Raheem Mostert and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. It’s not immediately clear whether the Niners have engaged in serious talks with either player, but, at minimum, the front office has been planning internally. 

Mostert is under club control through 2021 thanks to the three-year extension he signed last year. The Niners don’t necessarily have to rush things, but Mostert is clearly underpaid – that deal pays him less than $3MM per year on average. At the time, Mostert was mostly a special teams player, but now, after posting 772 yards and eight touchdowns, he finds himself as the team’s RB1. As veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson says, Mostert requested a pay raise earlier this offseason to reflect his heightened status, although his current deal does include certain rushing incentives (Twitter link). Mostert is 28 and is well aware of the shelf life of RBs, so his request makes plenty of sense.

Bourne, meanwhile, has one year to go before he hits the open market. The Niners cuffed him with the restricted free agent tender at the second-round level, retaining him for a cool $3.27MM in 2020. The 24-year-old (25 in August) has spent the last three years with SF and has been a key part of the offense over the last two. Between 2018 and 2019, Bourne has totaled 72 catches for 845 yards and nine touchdowns. This year, he has a prime opportunity to take things up a notch. With Emmanuel Sanders out of the picture and Deebo Samuel nursing a broken foot, Bourne could open the year as one of Jimmy Garoppolo‘s top targets.

49ers WR Kendrick Bourne Signs RFA Tender

Kendrick Bourne is heading back to San Francisco. The restricted free agent wideout signed his tender with the 49ers today.

Back in March, Bourne was slapped with a second-round tender, an indication that the organization was serious about retaining him. Thanks to today’s official signing, the receiver will earn around $3.27MM next season.

Bourne spent the past three seasons with San Francisco, but he was especially productive between 2018 and 2019. Over the past two years, the receiver has hauled in a total of 72 receptions for 845 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also appeared in 16 games in each of the past two seasons.

This past year, Bourne appeared in all three playoff games for San Francisco, hauling in a total of six receptions. That included a pair of catches for 42 yards during the 49ers’ Super Bowl loss.

Bourne could have a chance to take on a bigger role in 2020. With Deebo Samuel atop the receiver depth chart, Bourne will compete with the likes of Dante Pettis and free agent addition Travis Benjamin for snaps.

Bourne has spent the past three seasons with the 49ers, and he’s really come into his own between 2018 and 2019. Over the past two years, the receiver has hauled in a total of 72 receptions for 845 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also appeared in 16 games in each of the past two years.
