Mike Davis (RB)

Bears To Sign RB Mike Davis

The Bears are adding a running back. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the team has reached an agreement to sign Mike Davis.

This will be the first significant payday for the 26-year-old, who languished for two years in San Francisco before finding a home with the Seahawks. The deal is for two years and worth $6MM, per Rapoport (on Twitter). This pact carries a max value of $7MM. Davis hit free agency last offseason but decided to stick with the Seahawks.

After starting six games with Seattle in 2017, Davis established career-highs across the board in 2018. In 15 games, the running back ran for 514 yards and four touchdowns on 112 carries. He also showed some pass-catching prowess, hauling in 34 receptions for 214 yards and one score.

His role in Chicago is a bit uncertain considering the presence of both Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen. Davis is versatile enough to serve as insurance for both of those players, and he’s a better option than both Taquan Mizzell and Ryan Nall. However, barring a trade, it’s unlikely Davis will end up playing an overly-significant role for his new team.

Seahawks Re-Sign RB Mike Davis

Mike Davis has agreed to a one-year deal to stay with the Seahawks, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). He took visits elsewhere, but ultimately decided to stay in Seattle where he showed some promise last year.

Davis’ visits during the free agency period included the Lions and Rams. For now, Seattle offers him the easiest path to the field.

Davis went from Seattle’s practice squad to the varsity squad in November when C.J. Prosise landed on IR. He had some solid games down the stretch. In December against the Jaguars, he ran for 66 yards off of 15 carries, good for a 4.4 yards per carry average. Then, in the season finale against the Cardinals, he had 48 yards off of ten carries. All in all, he appeared in six games (all starts) and finished with 240 rushing yards on 68 carries. He also added another 15 receptions for 131 yards.

The Seahawks also have Chris Carson, J.D. McKissic, and C.J. Prosise under contract for 2018. You can expect Seattle to continue exploring upgrades in free agency and the draft.

RB Mike Davis Meets With Rams

Mike Davis has another suitor. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that the free agent running back met with the Rams today. The veteran previously visited the Lions.

Davis, a 2015 fourth-round pick by the 49ers, was claimed off waivers by Seattle last May. He didn’t make the Week 1 cut, but he ultimately landed on Seattle’s practice squad. In November, Davis finally earned a promotion to the varsity squad when C.J. Prosise landed on IR.

Davis’ stat line wasn’t overly impressive in 2017, but he did have a handful of solid games for the Seahawks. On Dec. 10 against Jacksonville, he ran for 66 yards off of 15 carries, good for a 4.4 yards per carry average. Then, in the season finale against Arizona, he had 48 yards off of ten attempts. In six games (six starts), Davis finished with 240 rushing yards on 68 carries. He also added another 15 receptions for 131 yards.

The Rams could use some depth behind Todd Gurley and backup Malcolm Brown. Davis would likely compete with Justin Davis and Zach Laskey in Los Angeles.

Lions To Meet With RB Mike Davis

The Lions will meet with running back Mike Davis on Friday, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter). Davis also has other visits lined up after his Detroit trip, Rapoport adds.

Davis, a fourth-round pick of the Niners in 2015, was claimed off waivers by Seattle in May. Although he didn’t make the Week 1 cut, the Seahawks signed him to the taxi squad after releasing him. In November, Davis earned a promotion to the varsity squad when C.J. Prosise landed on IR.

Davis’ stat line doesn’t jump off the page, but he did have some performances of note late last season. On Dec. 10 against Jacksonville, he ran for 66 yards off of 15 carries, good for a 4.4 yards per carry average. Then, in the season finale against Arizona, he had 48 yards off of ten attempts. He’s not a surefire answer for the Lions’ running woes, but he could compete for a spot on the roster.

On Friday morning, the Lions announced that running back Zach Zenner has been re-signed. If Davis is inked, that would make six RBs under contract for Detroit. Even then, they’d still continue to explore options in free agency and the draft.

Seahawks Place C.J. Prosise On IR

The Seahawks have placed running back C.J. Prosise on injured reserve, per a team announcement. To take his place, running back Mike Davis has been promoted from the practice squad.

Prosise has been dealing with ankle injuries throughout the season. The most recent flare-up happened during the team’s Nov. 9 win over the Cardinals, forcing him from the game midway. His prognosis apparently wasn’t great heading into this weekend’s game against the Falcons, prompting the team to park him on IR for the rest of the year.

Davis, a fourth-round pick of the Niners in 2015, was claimed off waivers by Seattle in May. Although he didn’t make the Week 1 cut, the Seahawks signed him to the taxi squad after releasing him. The 24-year-old had 19 carries for 50 yards in eight games for the Niners last year. He has yet to show much at the NFL level, but the Seahawks believe that he has a bit of potential.

Davis joins Eddie Lacy (recently sidelined with a groin injury), Thomas Rawls, and J.D. McKissic on the RB depth chart.

49ers Release RB Mike Davis

The 49ers have released running back Mike Davis, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Davis drew trade interest during the draft, so Rapoport expects him to find a market for his services now that he is available. Mike Davis (vertical)

Davis was a fourth-round pick in 2015 but he hasn’t done a whole lot in his two NFL seasons. Between 2015 and 2016, he has averaged just 2.0 yards per carry on 54 attempts. The Niners added running back Joe Williams in the fourth round of this year’s draft and they have five other veterans RBs under contract, so there wasn’t much room for Davis. The Niners are also expected to add Georgia Southern running back Matt Breida as an undrafted free agent.

Davis missed the second half of the 2016 season with a broken hand. He was slated to return from IR later in the season, but he never made it back on to the field.

49ers Send Michael Wilhoite To IR

A rebuilding 49ers season will end with another starter unavailable for Week 17 action after the team sent linebacker Michael Wilhoite to injured reserve, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.

San Francisco’s corresponding move comes in the form of backup running back Mike Davis being activated from IR-DTR.

Despite being an undrafted free agent from Division II Washburn, Wilhoite’s started 28 games for the 49ers the past two seasons.

The 29-year-old inside linebacker’s 2015 season, however, has been an uphill struggle, per Pro Football Focus. The advanced-metrics site rates Wilhoite as the league’s worst linebacker.

Davis played in five games this year, the most recent coming in Week 8 against the Rams. Prior to suffering a broken hand, the fourth-round rookie didn’t make much progress, gaining 24 yards on 25 carries as a backup. Per Barrows, Davis runs the risk of becoming the first running back since ex-Chiefs committee cog Donnell Bennett, who gained 24 yards on 27 totes in 2000, to average fewer than one yard per carry.

Minor NFL Transactions: 12/22/15

Tuesdays are typically busy days for roster changes during the NFL regular season, and even with the holidays around the corner, this week is no different. Here are the latest minor transactions from around the league:

  • The Packers announced that they’ve placed long snapper Brett Goode on injured reserve, signing fellow snapper Rick Lovato to take his place. Per Wes Hodkiewicz of PackersNews.com (Twitter link), Goode tore his ACL during Sunday’s game against the Raiders.
  • The Bears announced (via Twitter) that they’ve promoted defensive tackle D’Anthony Smith from the practice squad, waiving running back Antone Smith to create a roster spot. D’Anthony has spent time with the Jaguars, Lions, and Seahawks, while Antone had seen just one carry for Chicago this year.
  • With Marcus Mariota ailing, the Titans have signed quarterback Alex Tanney off the Colts’ practice squad, reports Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com (Twitter link). Tanney, known for his “trick-shot” Youtube videos, will back up Zach Mettenberger on Sunday. Tennessee placed defensive tackle Mike Martin on injured reserve to create a roster spot.

Earlier updates:

  • The 49ers have signed running back DuJuan Harris from off the Ravens‘ practice squad, cutting running back Travaris Cadet to make room, tweets Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com noted this afternoon (via Twitter) that the knee injury sustained by Shaun Draughn didn’t appear to be serious, but the club wanted to add some insurance just in case. San Francisco may get some added insurance in the form of Mike Davis, who is currently on the IR-DTR list, and will begin practicing this week, per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter link).
  • After somehow playing through a fractured fibula for three quarters on Sunday, safety David Bruton will head to injured reserve, officially ending his season, the Broncos confirmed today in a press release. Safety Shaun Prater will take the open spot on the roster, with Bruton expected to require four to six weeks to recover from his injury.
  • As expected, the Browns formally placed starting right guard John Greco on injured reserve today, per a team release. Cleveland has re-signed wide receiver Darius Jennings to the roster, after waiving him last week.
  • The Buccaneers have filled the opening on their 53-man roster by promoting wide receiver Evan Spencer from their practice squad, the team announced today in a press release. Spencer was selected in the sixth round of this year’s draft by Washington.
  • The Bills are elevating wide receiver Walter Powell to their active roster from the practice squad, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Powell figures to replace Robert Woods, who is expected to land on IR.
  • Giants fullback Nikita Whitlock is headed to the injured reserve list, reports Jordan Raanan of NJ.com. Whitlock suffered a knee injury that isn’t expected to be a long-term issue, but it will keep him sidelined for the club’s last couple games of the season.

49ers Notes: Carradine, Davis, York

The 49ers rallied back from a 24-0 deficit against the Bengals to make it look respectable, but they got beaten pretty bad to fall to 4-10 on the season, clinching last place in the NFC West. Without much to root for in San Francisco, here are a few storylines to follow as we come to the final two weeks of the season.

  • 49ers defensive lineman Tank Carradine isn’t known as an edge rusher, but he has been remaking his body in order to be more of an explosive pass rusher from the outside, according to CSNBayArea.com. Carradine is currently at 295 pounds, but hopes to eventually play at his more natural weight of 260 or 265 pounds. He is in a contract year next season, and wants to make an impact as a pass rushing defensive end or outside linebacker.
  • The 49ers might be in need of some running back depth with Shaun Draughn dealing with an injury. Fortunately, Mike Davis is eligible to return from IR-DTR this week, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (via Twitter).
  • While the majority of the team’s fans are likely looking ahead to 2016, 49ers CEO Jed York won’t talk about any potential changes until after the season, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com (via Twitter). David Fucillo of NinersNation.com hopes that the conversation York has after the season includes drastic changes across the coaching staff.

49ers Sign Two CBs; Mike Davis To IR-DTR

The 49ers have placed running back Mike Davis on the injured reserve list with the designation to return, the team announced today in a press release. Davis may be the last player this season to get that designation, since anyone placed on IR-DTR after this week wouldn’t be eligible to return in the second half of the regular season.

In addition to moving Davis – who can return for Week 17 – to IR-DTR, the Niners also placed safety L.J. McCray on season-ending injured reserve. To fill the two newly-opened spots on the 53-man roster, San Francisco promoted a pair of cornerbacks, Marcus Cromartie and Chris Davis, from the team’s practice squad.

As Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle points out (via Twitter), it makes sense for the 49ers to promote multiple cornerbacks to their active roster due to the injury problems they’re having in the secondary. Cornerbacks Tramaine Brock (shin), Kenneth Acker (concussion), and Keith Reaser (ankle) are all listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Atlanta.

The Niners have also seen their backfield ravaged by injuries, having placed Davis on IR-DTR after sending Reggie Bush to the IR list earlier this week. The team signed veteran backs Shaun Draughn and Pierre Thomas to fill in for this weekend’s contest.
