Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC South

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC South teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Texans, Colts, Jaguars, and Titans are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s AFC South transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day:

Texans Finalize 53-Man Roster

With cuts due this afternoon, the Texans made theirs official. This includes all-time punter great Shane Lechler, which surfaced on Friday.

The Texans also released Joe Webb, thinning out their quarterback room to just Deshaun Watson and Brandon Weeden.

Houston will begin its season without the services of backup running back D’Onta Foreman as well. Still recovering from his season-ending injury sustained in November of last year, Foreman will begin the season on the Texans’ Reserve/PUP list. He won’t be eligible to play until after Week 6.

As for the rest of Houston’s Saturday roster decisions, here’s who will not appear on the 53-man group to start the season:

Texans Claim Roderick Johnson Off Waivers

The Texans have claimed offensive tackle Roderick Johnson off of waivers from the Browns, a league source tells Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Johnson was released by Cleveland on this week to make room for the addition of former No. 2 overall pick Greg Robinson

Johnson, a fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft, missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury. The new regime, led by GM John Dorsey, preferred to the potential of Robinson over that of Johnson, even though Johnson is ostensibly back to full health.

The Texans will assume the remainder of Johnson’s rookie contract, which has three years remaining. He’ll carry a cap number of just $547K if he sticks on the roster.

The Texans project to start Julie’n Davenport and Seantrel Henderson at the tackle spots to open the season. Meanwhile, they’re looking to fortify the bench with Jeff Allen on the PUP list. Johnson could fit in as a reserve, along with third-round tackle/guard Martinas Rankin.

Browns Sign Greg Robinson

The Browns have signed offensive lineman Greg Robinson, per a team announcement. To make room on the roster, fellow lineman Roderick Johnson has been waived.

Robinson, the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 draft, has been looking for work all offseason. Of course, things haven’t gone according to plan for Robinson since leaving Auburn to enter the NFL. Robinson started in 42 of 46 appearances with the Rams, but the advanced metrics at Pro Football Focus rated him among the league’s worst tackles in each of his first three seasons. Then, right around this time last year, the Rams shipped him to the Lions for a sixth-round pick.

Robinson started six games for the Lions in Taylor Decker‘s absence, but didn’t perform all that well. The Lions released Robinson in November when Decker returned to the lineup and he did not hook on with another club in 2017.

Johnson, meanwhile, was a fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft. He missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury and the new regime apparently was not interested in seeing what he could do at full health.

Browns Acquire Jets’ No. 160 Selection

The Browns traded up for the second time today, acquiring the Jets’ No. 160 selection. They took Florida State offensive lineman Roderick Johnson after making the move. The Browns traded pick No. 181 (fifth round) and pick No. 188 (sixth) to the Jets to make the move. They also received pick No. 224 from the Jets in the swap (Twitter link via Jeff Schudel of The News-Herald).

Cleveland also made a deal with Denver earlier today to acquire the Broncos’ fourth-round selection, along with a seventh. The Browns traded two fifth-rounders for that right. They selected cornerback Howard Wilson from Houston in the fourth.

These moves come two days after the Browns traded out of their No. 12 overall spot, with the Texans moving up 13 spots for the right to draft Deshaun Watson. The Browns then took Jabrill Peppers before trading back into the first round and adding receiving tight end David Njoku.

The 6-foot-7 Johnson will join former Seminoles teammate Cameron Erving on the Browns’ line, one that’s been partially remade via additions of Kevin Zeitler and J.C. Tretter this offseason.
