Swayze Waters

Minor NFL Transactions: 8/15/16

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Buccaneers have signed defensive tackle Ishmaa’ily Kitchen and waived/injured rookie safety Elijah Shumate, the club announced. Kitchen, who weighs in at 330 pounds, appeared in 40 games for the Browns from 2012-14, but saw action in only two contests last year with the Patriots and Lions.
  • The Cardinals announced that they’ve waived/injured safety Durell Eskridge and re-signed safety Tyrequek Zimmerman.
  • The Raiders have waived offensive lineman Torian White, per an announcement from the club. Additionally, head coach Jack Del Rio told reporters, including Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link) that tight end Gabe Holmes is likely headed to injured reserve.
  • The Seahawks announced that they’ve waived running back Cameron Marshall and signed linebacker Quayshawn Nealy.
  • The Colts have claimed guard Donovan Williams off waivers from the Bears and waived punter Michael Palardy, the team announced.
  • The Steelers announced that they’ve signed linebacker Jermauria Rasco and waived long snapped Matt Dooley. Pittsburgh also reached an injury settlement with special teams ace Ross Ventrone, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
  • The Jets cut defensive tackle Christo Bilukidi with a left squad designation, according to Wilson (Twitter link).
  • The Panthers announced that they’ve swapped out punters, signing Kasey Redfern while waiving Swayze Waters.
  • The Chargers have signed defensive tackle Kamal Johnson, linebacker Zach Hodges, and linebacker James Vaughters, and waived waived cornerback Carrington Byndom.
  • The Rams have signed safety Michael Caputo and waived/injured safety Brian Randolph, tweets Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.
  • The Packers have waived/injured long snapper Jesse Schmitt and will likely release him with an injury settlement, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Twitter link).
  • The Falcons have claimed guard Jordan Walsh off waivers from the Saints and waived fellow guard Shahbaz Ahmed, per Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com.

NFC South Notes: Saints, Payton, Bucs

The Saints are considering several scenarios with fullback Austin Johnson, according to Nick Underhill of the Advocate. Johnson recently suffered a knee injury in camp, and New Orleans is hoping that he’ll be able to return in a few weeks and continue to work towards a roster spot. But while they wait for more information, the Saints have signed veteran John Kuhn to compete with incumbent fullback Sione Huma.

Here’s more from the NFC South:

  • Although rumors persisted that Sean Payton would leave the Saints for a new team, it doesn’t as though the New Orleans head coach ever seriously considered defecting. “I understand how that began to build steam, and yet [GM] Mickey [Loomis] and I have a great relationship,” Payton told Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com. “That took basically a day-and-a-half of us sitting down and outlining the next five years and what our goals are and where we see this team going.” Payton is now locked up through the 2020 campaign.
  • Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht took some flak for firing Lovie Smith after only two seasons, especially given that Licht didn’t exactly shake up the coaching staff, promoting offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter to the top job. But as Licht tells Peter King of TheMMQB.com, his choice of Koetter will likely be the defining moment of his Tampa tenure. “My career’s probably on the line with this pick,” said Licht. “That was the thing I thought about right away: We’ve got to find the guy who’s going to have success and eventually leave on his own terms.”
  • Locked in a battle with rookie Swayze Waters, veteran punter Mike Scifres has not had a productive camp with the Panthers, writes King in the same piece. Scifres signed a minimum salary benefit contract with no guaranteed money, so Carolina could easily move on if they so choose. Head coach Ron Rivera didn’t dismiss the possibility of signing another punter, according to King.
  • Just days after signing with the Falcons, wide receiver Lance Moore announced his retirement from the NFL.

NFC Notes: Goff, Rams, Hardy, Cowboys

We’re only a few days into rookie minicamp, but it sounds like Jared Goff might be setting himself up for the Rams‘ starting job already.

He’s doing a great job picking up our offense,” coach Jeff Fisher told the team’s website. “We’ve given him a lot more information than we did at the private workout and then that we did here at our meeting, and he’s handled it without any problem. And that’s the impressive thing…I passed him last night walking to the room and he was leaving the meeting room at 10 o’clock. He’s that kind of guy. He’ll spend the time. It’s important to him.”

Minor NFL Transactions: 2/11/16

Here are Thursday’s minor signings, cuts, and other moves from across the NFL:

  • The Seahawks also signed running back Cameron Marshall, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets. An Arizona State product, Marshall played the past two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. The 24-year-old runner gained 992 yards from scrimmage and scored five touchdowns in 18 CFL contests last season. He initially spent time with the Dolphins in 2013 before debuting in Canada a year later.

Earlier updates:

  • The Lions have signed veteran linebacker Jerry Franklin, the team announced today. Franklin, who played his college ball at Arkansas, has spent time on the regular season rosters for the Bears, Chiefs, and Saints since 2012.
  • The Panthers have signed former CFL punter Swayze Waters to a one-year deal, the club announced in a press release. Waters, who missed most of the 2015 season due a hip injury, handled punting and kicking duties for the Toronto Argonauts, earning special teams player of the year honors in 2014.
  • Another CFL player, wide receiver Jeff Fuller, has a deal in place to join the Seahawks, according to Scott Mitchell of the Calgary Sun (Twitter link). In 13 games last season for the Calgary Stampeders, Fuller grabbed 47 balls for 619 yards and three touchdowns.
