Eagles DT Fletcher Cox Likely To Miss Time
Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks as he deals with a calf injury, according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Although Philadelphia head coach Doug Pederson labeled Cox “day-to-day,” a source tells Bowen a two-to-three week absence is more likely.

One of the more dominant defensive tackles in the league, Cox has thus far graded as the NFL’s No. 23 interior defender while playing roughly 56% of the Eagles’ defensive snaps, per Pro Football Focus. Cox, who agreed to a six-year, $102.6MM extension prior to the 2016 campaign, has posted two sacks, two fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown this season.
Cox will certainly be missed, but Philadelphia has enough defensive line depth to account for his unavailability. Beau Allen will likely see more snaps opposite starting defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan, while backups Elijah Qualls and Destiny Vaeao could also see increased action. Alternatively, the Eagles could use Vinny Curry on the inside, allowing Derek Barnett and Chris Long to contribute on the edge.

Eagles Sign RB Kenjon Barner
Following Darren Sproles‘ season-ending injury, we heard that the Eagles were in the market for a running back. Well, it sounds like the team has targeted a familiar face. According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan (via Twitter), the Eagles are expected to sign running back Kenjon Barner. ESPN’s Field Yates reported (via Twitter) earlier today that Barner was auditioning for the team. It’s a one-year contract for Barner, according to Philly.com’s Jeff McLane (via Twitter).
Barner, a 2013 sixth-round pick by the Panthers, spent two seasons in Philly, appearing in 23 total games between 2015 and 2016. The running back was productive despite limited snaps, compiling 253 rushing yards on only 55 carries (4.6 yards per attempt) during his Eagles tenure. Following a season-ending injury last season, Barner signed a one-year deal with the Chargers this past offseason, but he was ultimately cut by the team in early September.
During his brief career, Barner had also proved to be useful in the passing game, which could be especially important to the Eagles during Sproles’ absence. Including his time in Carolina, the 27-year-old has hauled in 16 career receptions for 71 yards. The Oregon product also has experience on special teams, having returned 12 kicks (with a 25.3-yard average) and three punts.
After Sproles collected 15 carries and seven receptions through two-plus games, Wendell Smallwood and LeGarrette Blount picked up the slack for their injured teammate during Sunday’s win over the Giants. The duo combined for 24 carries, with Smallwood hauling in one of his two targets. Even if the Eagles are content with the duo, it was assumed that they’d be in the market for some reinforcement. Besides Blount, Smallwood, and (presumably) Barner, undrafted rookie Corey Clement is the only other healthy running back on the roster.
NFL Waiver Priority Now Based On 2017 Record
We’re coming up on Week 4 of the NFL season and that means that waiver claim priority will be based on the current league standings instead of last year’s. Of course, waiver priority is based on the inverted NFL standings, which have built in tiebreakers to sort out the many logjams that naturally occur.
Throughout the offseason and the first three weeks of the regular season, the Browns enjoyed top priority thanks to their 1-15 finish last year. Now, we have a brand new pecking order. Here is a full rundown of the current waiver claim priority, which will change from week to week (Twitter links via Field Yates of ESPN.com):
T-1. Bengals
T-1. Browns
T-1. 49ers
4. Giants
5. Chargers

Eagles To Add Running Back This Week
Now that Darren Sproles is out for the rest of the season with a broken arm/torn ACL, the Eagles will add another running back in the coming days, head coach Doug Pederson told reporters, including Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com (Twitter link). Byron Marshall, who’s spent most of the past year-plus on Philadelphia’s practice squad, is presumably one option to join an Eagles backfield that currently consists of LeGarrette Blount, Wendell Smallwood, and Corey Clement. If Philadelphia wants to scour the free agent market, the club will find options such as Shaun Draughn, C.J. Spiller, Travaris Cadet, and former Eagle Kenjon Barner, all of whom could help replace the pass-catching prowess of Sproles.
Eagles’ Darren Sproles Has Torn ACL
Darren Sproles‘ outlook for 2017 has gone from bad to worse. In addition to a broken arm, it turns out the running back also suffered a torn ACL on the same play on Sunday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The torn ACL will rule Sproles out for the season, forcing the Eagles to place him on injured reserve.
Sproles, 34, indicated that 2017 would be his final NFL season. The serious knee injury likely seals that decision for the veteran running back.
In three games this year, Sproles had 15 carries for 61 yards, good for a respectable 4.1 yards-per-carry average. He also caught seven passes for 73 yards. He was expected to have a big role as the Eagles’ pass-catching specialist out of the backfield, but he wasn’t utilized all that much.
The Eagles will move forward with Wendell Smallwood and signed LeGarrette Blount as their top backs while UDFA Corey Clement will be asked to play a larger role. They may want to add a running back to the mix to help replace Sproles’ hands, particularly in light of the team’s overall RB issues in September.
Sproles totaled the most carries of his career last year with 94 and he also caught 52 passes. The 965 yards were the diminutive runner’s third-most in his career.
Eagles RB Darren Sproles Breaks Arm
Darren Sproles left the Eagles’ Week 3 win over the Giants on Sunday with what could be a season-defining injury. The veteran running back is believed to have suffered a broken arm, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Although an MRI is scheduled for Monday, Rapoport notes Sproles is out indefinitely. This is potentially the 34-year-old running back’s final season. He indicated as such late last year but backtracked on confirming it ahead of this season, so a lengthy absence could play a big impact on his decision.
This is the final year of Sproles’ contract. The Eagles have Wendell Smallwood and signed LeGarrette Blount as a free agent. UDFA Corey Clement also saw action today. But Sproles returned as a key performer for the team, and he could well be an IR candidate after this injury. Sproles would join rookie Donnel Pumphrey on IR if the Eagles take that course of action.
The Eagles ran for 193 yards as a team today, with Smallwood contributing 71 yards and Blount 67. But Sproles has primarily served as a receiver out of various backfields in his career, maintaining quality form and a key role despite being in his 13th season.
The former Chargers and Saints weapon is in his fourth season with the Eagles, the past three being Pro Bowl campaigns for his return work. Sproles led all Eagles players with 865 yards from scrimmage last season. He’s returned a punt for a touchdown in each of his three Philadelphia campaigns. Philly parted ways with Ryan Mathews and Kenjon Barner from its 2016 backfield, so a Sproles absence will signal a changing of the guard.
Latest On Eric Rowe Trade
- Head coach Ben McAdoo intends to retain control of the Giants‘ offensive play-calling, sources tell Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Of course, that report was filed before New York fell to 0-3 with a loss to the Eagles today, but Big Blue’s offense played well in the second half, as Eli Manning completed three touchdown passes (two to Odell Beckham Jr. and one to Sterling Shepard). However, the Giants coaching staff is “turning up the temperature” on the New York players, and that intensity only figures to increase now that the club remained winless today.
- As part of the 2016 trade that sent cornerback Eric Rowe to New England, the Eagles will see their fourth-round return upgraded to a third-round pick if Rowe plays in 50% of the Patriots’ defensive snaps in 2017. Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice examines where that deal stands, and whether the possibility of acquiring a third-rounder lessened the pain of sending a 2018 third-round pick to Buffalo for fellow corner Ronald Darby earlier this year.
Eagles Erred In Handing Isaac Seumalo Starting Job
- Eagles executive vice president Howie Roseman erred in handing guard Isaac Seumalo a starting job before training camp began, Paul Domowitch of Philly.com opines. Roseman traded Allen Barbre to Denver on July 26 to further drive home the point that he wanted Seumalo in the starting lineup, but the second-year man is already headed to the bench in favor of Chance Warmack after a pair of rough games. The Eagles’ hope was that Seumalo would start all 16 games at left guard this year and then, perhaps as early as next season, shift to center to take over for Jason Kelce, Domowitch suggests. Kelce’s under contract for a few more years, so if Seumalo doesn’t return to a No. 1 role this season and show marked improvement, perhaps the former will stick around in 2018.
Eagles Attempted Bears Practice Squad Poach
- The Eagles attempted to sign defensive back DeAndre Houston-Carson off the Bears‘ practice squad, but Chicago promoted Houston-Carson to its active roster instead, reports Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune (Twitter link). Houston-Carson, 24, appeared in eight games for the Bears a season ago, but rarely played on defense (just eight snaps). Instead, he spent most of his time on special teams, where he played on a quarter of Chicago’s snaps.
