Cowboys To Sign CB Robert Rochell, DT Perrion Winfrey

The Cowboys are adding two potential depth pieces to their defense this week. Cornerback Robert Rochell and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey are Dallas-bound, according to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. To clear roster space, Dallas waived cornerback Luq Barcoo and defensive tackle Justin Rogers.

A former Rams and Packers corner, Rochell is a fifth-year veteran who started five games for Los Angeles’ Super Bowl LVI-winning team. A former Browns fourth-round pick, Winfrey saw action in two seasons but has not made much of an impact. The Chiefs released Rochell earlier this month; he worked out for the Cowboys recently, per Wilson.

Rochell is the more notable name here, as he has four years’ worth of experience and made some contributions on a Super Bowl winner. While the Rams did not use the former fourth-round pick in the playoffs in 2021, Rochell logged three postseason appearances with the Packers — the first an upset win over the Cowboys — over the past two seasons.

The five rookie-year starts notwithstanding, Rochell’s best chance to make the Cowboys’ 53-man roster would be as a special-teamer. He has played just 27 defensive snaps since 2022 but was on the field for more than 70% of the Rams’ special snaps in 2022 and over 50% of the Packers’ ST plays in ’23.

This marks Winfrey’s first chance since the Jets placed him on IR in December 2023. No reserve/futures deal commenced following that move, and Winfrey was out of the NFL in 2024. The Browns chose Winfrey 108th overall in 2022, after he earned Senior Bowl MVP honors, but quickly saw him run into trouble. He was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge in Texas involving his girlfriend at the time (the case was dismissed in 2023). Cleveland did not see much from the Oklahoma alum on the field, using him as a backup as a rookie before waiving him in July 2023.

Dallas will enter training camp with health issues at corner, having drafted Shavon Revel after an ACL tear and having seen All-Pro Trevon Diggs run into more knee trouble. Revel will not be ready for the start of camp, while Diggs is a candidate to start the season on the reserve/PUP list. This leaves uncertainty around DaRon Bland — who missed much of the 2024 season due to injury — at the position. The team added former first-rounder Kaiir Elam in a trade and rosters backup-level options in Kemon Hall and Troy Pride. At D-tackle, Dallas signed Solomon Thomas and drafted seventh-rounders (Tommy Akingbesote, Jay Toia) as potential options behind Osa Odighizuwa and Mazi Smith.

While the Lions navigate a long list of injuries to their defense, the team did get some good news today, as linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin returned to practice. The 29-year-old suffered a neck injury in early November that required a stint on IR. While there seemed to be some initial pessimism surrounding the injury, the veteran will now have a chance to return for the stretch run of the season.

A former fourth-round pick, Reeves-Maybin spent the first five seasons of his career in Detroit before a one-year stay in Houston. He’s spent the past two seasons back in Detroit, including a 2023 campaign where he earned a Pro Bowl nod for his special teams prowess. He’s continued to serve an important ST role in 2024, but he also saw time in 111 defensive snaps in eight games. That represented his highest defensive snap count since the 2021 campaign.

Slovis went to camp with the Colts, joining the team as a UDFA this year. Houston placed Case Keenum on IR and released Tim Boyle, who is now the Dolphins’ P-squad QB. Slovis, who played at USC, Pittsburgh and BYU in college, is now the Texans’ de facto third-stringer.

Shelley has 11 career starts — with the Bears and Vikings — on his resume. He joined the Raiders last year but ended up with the Rams, playing in 11 games as a backup. The Giants have spent time searching for a cornerback answer, having not been too satisfied with their Cor’Dale Flott–Nick McCloud CB2 competition. New York did not make any waiver claims at the position Wednesday.

Reagor, who played for the Patriots last season, is back after being released earlier this week. The former Minnesota first-rounder played in 11 New England games last season, returning a kick for a touchdown. Latu joins the Browns after being a 49ers cut. The 2023 third-round pick missed all of last season with an ACL tear. Jefferson is back with the Bolts hours after being released.

Cowboys Reduce Roster To 53 Players

After some late trades and signings, the Cowboys joined in the NFL’s mass exodus of players to get their roster down to 53 players:

A number of veterans who were hoping to make the team in Dallas this year saw that hope come to an end. Freeman couldn’t compete with the young backups behind Ezekiel Elliott. Lawson couldn’t contribute to a depleted defensive line, either.

Rogers, the team’s seventh-round pick out of Auburn, is the only drafted rookie to be waived, though Thomas, the team’s other seventh-round pick out of Louisiana, will miss the entire season on injured reserve.

Brevyn Spann-Ford didn’t end up getting drafted, but the 24-year-old, 6-foot-7 tight end out of Minnesota will be the fourth tight end on the roster to start the year.

Cowboys Sign Round 1 T Tyler Guyton, Six Other Draftees

With some teams set for rookie minicamps this weekend, a flurry of draft pick signings is transpiring Thursday. The Cowboys are in on the action; all but one of their draftees is now under contract.

This includes a deal with first-round tackle Tyler Guyton, ESPN.com’s Todd Archer tweets. Dallas inked the Oklahoma prospect, whom the team drafted at No. 29 overall. Holdouts involving first-rounders are much rarer now thanks to the NFL’s slot system, which came to be as part of the 2011 CBA. Guyton’s four-year deal (feat. a fifth-year option) will be fully guaranteed.

The Cowboys have also signed offensive lineman Cooper Beebe (Round 3, Kansas State), linebacker Marist Liufau (Round 3), cornerback Caelen Carson (Round 5), wide receiver Ryan Flournoy, tackle Nathan Thomas (Round 6) and defensive tackle Justin Rogers (Round 7). Only second-rounder Marshawn Kneeland is unsigned. The second round has featured the longest waits in recent years, due to each draft seeing guarantee gains made by second-round picks.

Guyton looks to have a clear path to being the Cowboys’ Week 1 left tackle. Although the prospect of the team moving Tyler Smith back to left tackle surfaced earlier this offseason, it looks like — for the time being, at least — the team plans to keep its versatile left-sider at left guard. The Cowboys saw both Smith and Zack Martin earn All-Pro honors last season, helping the team withstand the losses of All-Decade LT Tyron Smith and center starter Tyler Biadasz. Beebe, chosen out of Kansas State, has a decent shot at taking over at center.

Dallas held the No. 24 overall pick but moved down five spots (via Detroit) and landed Guyton at 29. The extra selection turned into Beebe. Guyton will be asked to make the less common transition from college right tackle to NFL LT. The Saints may well ask Taliese Fuaga to do the same this year, though that is not certain just yet. Guyton stands 6-foot-8 — three inches taller than Tyron Smith — and 322 pounds. This year’s draft featured one of the best tackle crops in recent draft history; Guyton became the ninth tackle — if Duke LT (and likely Buccaneers center) Graham Barton is counted — chosen this year.

A TCU transfer, Guyton only made 14 college starts and did not earn first- or second-team All-Big 12 acclaim while a Sooner. But he checked in as a first-round-caliber talent. And the Cowboys have found a number of standouts in Round 1 — from Martin to the Smiths to Micah Parsons to CeeDee Lamb — over the past several years. They will hope Guyton can become a long-term blindside presence post-Tyron Smith, who joined the Jets in free agency.
