Karlos Williams

Karlos Williams Worked Out For Steelers

Karlos Williams‘ redemption tour recently stopped in Pittsburgh. The second-year running back worked out for the Steelers, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports, in addition to his Jets visit.

Williams, who went unclaimed on waivers, made his first post-cut stop to meet with the Jets, with whom he met with the franchise’s top decision-making personnel.

The Bills cut the embattled running back despite a standout rookie season supplementing LeSean McCoy off the bench and in the starting lineup when the starter missed time. Williams averaged 5.6 yards per carry while rushing for 517 yards and scoring nine total touchdowns as a rookie. Buffalo, though, lost patience with him after the league penalized him four games for substance-abuse issues and Williams struggled with his weight.

Schefter, who reported Williams’ weight ballooned to over 260 pounds this offseason, added the former fifth-round pick is working his way back into shape. He remains suspended for four games, so the Steelers wouldn’t be able to use the 23-year-old ball-carrier early in the season behind DeAngelo Williams were they to sign him.

Le’Veon Bell will miss the first three games of the season, and behind Williams Pittsburgh employs Fitzgerald Toussaint and former Ram Daryl Richardson. So, while the Steelers could use some help in the short-term, they’d only be getting Karlos Williams after Bell’s suspension concludes.

Karlos Williams Hopes To Join Jets

No deal is imminent between the Jets and free agent Karlos Williams, who visited the team Tuesday and Wednesday, but the running back would like that to change. After the Jets hosted Williams, the former Bill posted a video on Twitter expressing a desire to sign with the club.

“I love New York, love being close to the city. I’d like to fly with the Jets, baby,” said Williams, who also stated that he met with the Jets’ general manager, personnel director, head of security and owner. However, as noted by Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, owner Woody Johnson was not in the building when Williams visited the team.

Williams didn’t get every detail of his trip to Jets facilities right, then, but he did shed more light on what he and club brass discussed.

“Asked me a lot of combine [type] questions, obviously. Want to know my background and my people. No offer yet, but it was a good visit,” commented the 23-year-old.

Although immensely talented, any team interested in Williams would need to do its due diligence before signing him, as the Jets have. Despite a rookie year in which he averaged 5.6 yards per carry, picked up 613 scrimmage yards and scored nine times on just 104 touches, the Bills cut the 2015 fifth-round pick over the weekend.

Williams fell behind in Buffalo’s running back competition this summer thanks to weight problems, and he’s suspended for the first four games of the regular season after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The rest of the league’s teams have taken notice, apparently, as the ex-Florida State Seminole passed through waivers unclaimed after Buffalo parted with him.

If Williams ultimately gets his wish to to join the Jets, he’ll further deepen a backfield that already looks strong. New York has a quality starter in Matt Forte, whom it signed in free agency, as well as a high-end reserve in Bilal Powell. Other options include Khiry Robinson, Antone Smith and Dominique Williams, as the Jets’ depth chart indicates.

Extra Points: K. Williams, Rambo, Texans, Stork

The NFL announced a change to its injury reports, as the “probable” label is no longer in effect, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. As the league explains in its memo, approximately 95% of the players listed as “probable” ended up playing in that week’s games, rendering it essentially irrelevant. No replacement is in store for the “probable” tag, as teams will rely solely on “questionable,” “doubtful,” and “out.”

More from around the league:

  • Safety Bacarri Rambo is back to full health and is drawing attention from several teams as a free agent, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com tweets. A sixth-round pick in 2013, Rambo has so far played with the Redskins and Bills.
  • Five teams have shown interest in one of Rambo’s ex-teammates and fellow free agents, former Bills running back Karlos Williams, Sal Capaccio of WGR tweets. That list of teams includes the Jets, who hosted Williams on a visit Tuesday.
  • Henry Melton‘s one-year deal with the Broncos is for $760K and doesn’t include any guaranteed money, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. His pact counts for $600K against the Broncos’ cap.
  • The Texans did not have interest in former Patriots center Bryan Stork, now with the Redskins, when they thought he was about to hit free agency, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle tweets. That’s a little bit surprising given the high-ankle sprain recently suffered by rookie center Nick Martin, who was set to start. For now, Toledo product Greg Mancz is slated to take that role. Mancz spent his rookie season on IR with a knee injury that required surgery. Reviews on him have been positive, and Houston apparently prefers him to Stork, a former starter for the Pats.

Karlos Williams Visits Jets

Former Bills running back Karlos Williams surprisingly went unclaimed on waivers after being cut loose over the weekend, but he’s already garnering interest from another AFC East club. Williams met with the Jets today, according to Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 (Twitter link). However, “no deal is imminent” between the two sides, a source tells Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.Karlos Williams (Vertical)

The Jets would seem to be an odd fit for Williams given that they already boast a significant amount of talent in their backfield. New York agreed to a three-year deal with former Bears back Matt Forte over the offseason, and also re-signed Bilal Powell on a three-year pact that contained $6MM in guarantees. In addition to its top two backs, the Jets also have Khiry Robinson on the roster (though he’s admittedly still recovering from a broken leg) along with former Falcons RB Antone Smith, who was just signed last week.

Clearly, there are reasons to be concerned about Williams’ future. He’ll be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and he’s struggled with his weight throughout the offseason. At one point, Williams was up 261 pounds, and after losing some of that heft, he’d reportedly begun to balloon once again, leaving the Bills to wonder if he was serious about football.

But Williams also flashed dynamic ability during his rookie season, finishing with 613 yards from scrimmage and nine TDs on just 104 touches while averaging 5.6 yards per carry. The 23-year-old also became one of just two players in NFL history to score a touchdown in each of his first six games in the league. All in all, Williams seemingly defines an old adage: high risk, high reward.

Karlos Williams Goes Unclaimed

Karlos Williams is now a free agent. The deadline for him to be claimed off waivers has come and gone and all 31 teams have declined to take the running back at his scheduled salary, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweetsKarlos Williams (vertical)

[RELATED: Bills Expected Williams To Be Claimed]

As a rookie in 2015, Williams ran for 517 yards off of 93 carries, good for an eye-popping 5.6 yards-per-carry average. He also added seven rushing touchdowns. This year, the Bills were banking on Williams to serve as a quality complement to lead rusher LeSean McCoy, but things didn’t pan out that way.

In July, the Bills learned that Williams would have to serve a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

As an organization, we are disappointed that Karlos has put himself in this situation,” the Bills said in a statement at the time. “Poor decisions such as this affect not only the individual, but the entire Bills organization. We will continue to work with Karlos through the various player programs we provide to assist him in making better decisions moving forward.”

The issues with Williams didn’t stop there. The tailback reported to minicamp overweight, and, according to one report, porked all the way up to 261 pounds after being listed at 229 last year. Given his off-the-field and conditioning issues, it seems that the rest of the league isn’t all that crazy about him either.

10 Teams That Could Claim RB Karlos Williams

After waiving him yesterday, the Bills “fully expect” another NFL club to land running back Karlos Williams, and we’ll find out tomorrow if any other team decided to place a claim (the waiver period is typically 24 hours, but rolls over until Monday on weekends). If no one else is interested, Williams will become a free agent. But given that Williams’ (minimal) signing bonus will accelerate onto Buffalo’s cap –meaning that any acquiring team would only be on the hook for minimum salaries for the next three years — it seems likely that Williams will get claimed.Karlos Williams (Vertical)

Let’s take a look at several teams that could be interested in Williams, listed in order of their waiver priority:

Cleveland Browns — New head coach Hue Jackson is trying to foster a new culture with the Browns, but he’s also shown a willingness to give players a second chance. He’s embraced wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was recently reinstated from a season-long suspension, and he stood by running back Isaiah Crowell after the latter posted a disturbing image online. Crowell and Duke Johnson figure to get most of the run for Cleveland during the upcoming season, but the club should be stockpiling talent during its rebuild, and Williams would be a cheap upgrade.

San Diego Chargers — San Diego had high hopes for its rushing attack after trading up to select Melvin Gordon in the first round of last year’s draft, but offensive line injuries and Gordon’s own poor play led to the Chargers finishing 31st in rushing DVOA. Gordon then had microfracture surgery in January, and while his long-term prognosis is positive, serious knee injuries are always unwelcome news for young running backs. It looks like Gordon is already losing work to Danny Woodhead during the preseason, and if the Chargers think Gordon is in for another sub-par season, they could take a risk on Williams.

Baltimore Ravens — This is only my speculation, but given that he’s on the wrong side of 30, coming off injury, and due a non-guaranteed $3MM base salary, veteran running back Justin Forsett could be a surprise cut as roster cutdowns approach. Such a move would be made much easier if the Ravens were able to acquire a talent like Williams, who could slot in the backfield after his suspension, teaming with Javorius Allen, Terrance West, Kenneth Dixon, and perhaps Lorenzo Taliaferro. Baltimore has taken chances on character risks in the past, though the club was burned by safety Will Hill, with whom they cut ties after he was handed a 10-game suspension.

Philadelphia Eagles — Like the Browns, the Eagles haven’t been afraid to collect players who are considered character risks, as evidenced by their trade for receiver Dorial Green-Beckham last week. Philadelphia is hoping it can turn around the career of DGB, who struggled with both motivation and learning the Titans’ playbook, and they could place a similar bet on Williams. Like DGB, Williams clearly has talent, and the Eagles could use another option alongside Ryan Mathews, Kenjon Barner, Darren Sproles, and Wendell Smallwood. Turron Davenport of USA Today recently looked at how Williams could succeed in the type of outside zone runs employed by the Eagles.

Latest On Karlos Williams, Bills

After waiving him earlier today, the Bills “fully expect” another club to land running back Karlos Williams, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News (Twitter link). Because he’s not a vested veteran, Williams will be placed on waivers, meaning every team — beginning with the Titans and continuing in reverse order of the 2015 standings — will have the opportunity to claim him and his contract. If Williams goes unclaimed, he’ll become a free agent.Karlos WIlliams (Vertical)

Buffalo’s decision to cut Williams doesn’t have anything to do with his talent, per Carucci, who adds the Bills had simply “soured” on Williams’ attitude problems. As we heard earlier today, Williams weighed 261 pounds at one point during this offseason, up from his 2015 playing weight of 229, a gain Williams had attributed to his wife’s pregnancy. And after losing some of that weight, Williams had once again began to balloon, tweets Carucci, leading Buffalo to believe that he was “not serious about football.”

Meanwhile, the newly-signed Reggie Bush is in line to be the Bills’ No. 2 running back behind LeSean McCoy, and had been considered the top backup even before Williams was waived, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com (Twitter links). Bush will also serve as the club’s primary punt returner, and received the opening kickoff in today’s preseason contest against the Giants.

Bills Cut Karlos Williams

2:46pm: Doug Whaley told media — including Rodak — the team’s decision to cut Williams was indeed performance-related. The fourth-year GM said Williams came into camp “behind the eight ball” due to being overweight.

1:43pm: The since-cut running back thanked the Bills in an Instagram post.

1:40pm: Williams’ weight looks to have been the decisive factor here, rather than Bills management wanting to send a message to the locker room. Due to his struggles to get down to his playing weight, he hovered behind both Bush and Jonathan Williams, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

1:10pm: The Bills have reversed course on Karlos Williams. Buffalo’s backup running back in 2015, Williams won’t receive a chance to bounce back from the offseason suspension he drew, with Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reporting (on Twitter) that the Bills cut Williams.

Williams incurred a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy in July and wouldn’t have been eligible to play until October 9 for the Bills.

The team voiced support for the talented ball-carrier at the time but is now to be moving in a different direction as the preseason’s in full swing.

“As an organization, we are disappointed that Karlos has put himself in this situation,” the Bills said last month. “Poor decisions such as this affect not only the individual, but the entire Bills organization. We will continue to work with Karlos through the various player programs we provide to assist him in making better decisions moving forward.”

Rex Ryan himself said the Bills were not going to give up on Williams. Since this suspension was announced, the Bills have endured some misfortune despite the news LeSean McCoy wouldn’t be suspended. Shaq Lawson will miss regular-season time, and Reggie Ragland is now out for the season. Marcell Dareus also drew a four-game suspension.

Williams reported to minicamp overweight, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. Schefter tweets Williams at one point this offseason ballooned up to 261 pounds after being listed at 229 last year. That said, he should generate interest after a standout rookie season as a backup on a per-play basis. The 2015 fifth-round pick averaged 5.6 yards per carry and rushed for seven touchdowns, making three starts in relief of McCoy and helping out the Bills’ run-oriented attack.

The backfield depth chart for possibly the league’s most run-centric team weakens as a result of this move. But the Bills, while not adding anyone who is an obvious upgrade on Williams, did bring in fifth-rounder Jonathan Williams and also signed Reggie Bush after Karlos Williams’ suspension became known. Buffalo also brought back Dan Herron this offseason.

Williams was just one of two players in NFL history to score a touchdown in the first six games of his career. He finished with 613 yards from scrimmage and nine TDs on just 104 touches.

Bills’ Karlos Williams Suspended

The Bills announced that running back Karlos Williams has been suspended for four games due to a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Like another AFC East notable, Williams will be sidelined for the first month of the season. After that, he can return to action for the Bills’ October 9th tilt against the Rams. Karlos Williams (vertical)

As an organization, we are disappointed that Karlos has put himself in this situation,” the Bills said in a statement. “Poor decisions such as this affect not only the individual, but the entire Bills organization. As a rookie in 2015, Williams ran for 517 yards off of 93 carries, good for an eye-popping 5.6 yards-per-carry average. He also added seven rushing touchdowns. This year, the Bills were banking on Williams to serve as a quality complement to lead rusher LeSean McCoy, but they’ll be without his services in September.

In other news out of the Bills’ backfield, the league announced earlier this week that they will not charge McCoy for his role in a nightclub brawl earlier this year. Meanwhile, rookie tailback Jonathan Williams was arrested on DUI charges on Thursday morning.

AFC Notes: Forte, Texans, Bills

The fact that the Jets have a pair of terrific receivers in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker is one of the reasons running back Matt Forte chose to sign with the team over the winter, writes Zach Braziller of the New York Post. “If Brandon and Eric can be on the outside to help me out and if I can be really effective in the running game, it can help them out, too,” said Forte, who noted in 2013 – perhaps his best season – the Bears had two high-caliber wideouts (Marshall and Alshon Jeffery) whose respective presences aided the club’s running game.

Elsewhere around the AFC…

  • Thirteenth-year Texans defensive tackle Vince Wilfork believes he has a couple more good seasons in him, Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com tweets. Wilfork, 34, says his love of the game keeps him coming back each year, despite the sacrifices and hard work. Wilfork is entering the final season of a two-year, $9MM contract he inked in March 2015.
  • Bills running back Karlos Williams disappointed Rex Ryan when he showed up to minicamp overweight, with the head coach saying that the second-year man isn’t “anywhere close to where he needs to be to play at a high level” (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). Williams attributes his weight gain to his then-pregnant fiancee’s eating habits. “It definitely is a first but I like to eat and then her being pregnant gave me an excuse to eat, so eating anything and everything,” he said. “She’d wake up, one or two o’clock, ‘I want a snack.’ Well I’m not going to sit here and watch you eat because I don’t want you to feel bad but it’s back to football.” With his fiancee having had the baby, Williams will now try to work back into shape and follow up his excellent rookie year (517 rushing yards on 93 attempts, nine total touchdowns in as many games) with another strong campaign.
  • One of Wilfork’s teammates, Texans left tackle Duane Brown, is progressing from offseason surgery to repair a torn quadriceps muscle and should be ready by Week 1 at the latest, reports John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Brown, who has started in all 120 of his appearances with the Texans, suffered the injury in Week 17 last season.
  • Earlier this evening, we checked in on the latest from the AFC West – including a Von Miller update.
