Jaguars Discussing Extensions With Travon Walker, Parker Washington, Brenton Strange

The 2024 Jaguars offseason brought big-ticket extensions, while a reset of sorts occurred last year. As Jacksonville’s Liam Coen-James Gladstone regime moves through Year 2, however, some of Trent Baalke‘s draft choices are on the extension radar.

Edge rusher Travon Walker, wide receiver Parker Washington and tight end Brenton Strange have engaged in extension talks with the Jaguars, ESPN.com’s Michael DiRocco notes. These are being categorized as preliminary discussions, but it is certainly notable these players are under consideration to be paid by a regime that did not draft them. Gladstone said, via DiRocco, the team is “probably within striking distance to see things come to light” regarding such extensions.

While it is certainly not surprising to see Walker’s name here, the Jags overhauled their skill-position corps in 2025. The team released Evan Engram, Gabe Davis and Devin Duvernay while trading Christian Kirk to the Texans last year. Brian Thomas Jr. did not build on his strong rookie season, and trade acquisition Jakobi Meyers ended up being paid — at three years and $60MM. But Baalke-era picks Strange and Washington joined Meyers in making big impacts as Trevor Lawrence turned things around last season.

A 2023 sixth-round pick, Washington had worked as a Kirk replacement in the past. Last year brought a breakthrough, with Coen’s offense unlocking the Penn State product’s potential. Washington led the Jags with 847 receiving yards last season, totaling a career-high five touchdown grabs. The Jags have Meyers at $20MM per year to go with Lawrence’s $55MM-AAV deal, but they will see what it will take to keep Washington off the 2027 free agent market.

The 204-pound wide receiver certainly upped his stock in 2025, but the 2026 season should — in theory, at least — see a concerted effort to involve Thomas, especially now that Travis Hunter is shifting more to a cornerback role. Meyers also ignited the Jags’ offense following his midseason arrival, and the in-season extension reflects the Gladstone-Coen duo’s faith in his abilities moving forward. Washington continuing on his current pace, however, would make him one of the top 2027 WR free agents. The Jags have until next March to negotiate exclusively with him.

Strange took Engram’s spot as Jacksonville’s top receiving tight end last season, amassing 540 yards on 46 receptions. Strange averaged 11.7 yards per catch and smashed his previous yards-per-game best by producing his season yardage total in just 12 contests during an injury-shortened season. The Jags jettisoned Engram’s three-year, $41.25MM extension last March but are exploring what moving back into the upper-echelon TE market will cost.

The NFL currently features 14 tight ends earning at least $10MM per year. Strange will assuredly aim to join that club, and the former second-round pick — Washington’s teammate at Penn State — could up his price with a quality contract year.

Walker profiles as a 2027 franchise tag candidate. Tied to a fifth-year option salary of $15.2MM, the former No. 1 overall pick totaled 21.5 sacks from 2023-24 before tallying just 3.5 in 14 games last season. The Georgia alum posted fewer QB hits (13) and tackles for loss (eight) compared to his 2023 or ’24 totals; his 19 pressures tied for 66th. Josh Hines-Allen, who finished fifth in pressures (with 46) last season, received the tag after playing out his fifth-year option season. The Baalke regime extended him on a five-year, $141.25MM deal.

With the cap rising by nearly $50MM since that contract was finalized, Walker’s camp will likely set a higher price. But he is not coming off an especially impressive season. Still, the longtime Hines-Allen sidekick would be one of the 2027 market’s top prizes were he to make it there. We are a long way away from that, and the tag serves as a mechanism for the Jags to impede that path. Walker, whom Baalke drafted ahead of All-Pro Aidan Hutchinson, will not turn 26 until December. That stands to strengthen his leverage in extension talks.

Jaguars’ Christian Kirk Likely Needs Surgery; WR To Miss Time

The Jaguars have avoided the worst-case scenario with Trevor Lawrence. The ascending quarterback suffered a high ankle sprain and has been deemed day to day. Once Lawrence returns, he may not have one of his go-to wide receivers available.

Christian Kirk sustained a core muscle injury during Jacksonville’s overtime loss Monday night, and Doug Pederson said (via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo) the sixth-year wide receiver will likely need surgery. It has not yet been confirmed Kirk will go under the knife, but the former second-round pick will miss time.

Players regularly return from core surgeries after a number of weeks, so the prospect of Kirk being shut down for a bit — likely via an IR stay — and then coming back later this season may be in play. The team continues to evaluate its 2022 free agency pickup, who has played well since signing a widely scrutinized four-year, $72MM deal. It might not be a lock Kirk comes back, however, with NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport positing an eight-week recovery timetable could be in play here. Unless the Jaguars qualify for Super Bowl LVIII, such a timeline would end Kirk’s season.

Working in the slot frequently in Jacksonville this season, Kirk has joined Calvin Ridley as Lawrence’s top targets. Kirk resided as the Jags’ No. 1 wideout last season, when he finished with 1,108 receiving yards and eight touchdowns before helping the team erase a 27-point Chargers lead in a historic playoff comeback. This season, Kirk leads the team with 787 yards. Whereas Ridley has been more boom or bust in his first Jags season, Lawrence has been able to rely on Kirk regularly. No Jaguars pass catcher has totaled 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons since Jimmy Smith in the mid-2000s; this injury could certainly affect Kirk’s chances of matching that feat.

As they were last year, the Jaguars are in good shape regarding injury activations. They have five such moves remaining. Although Kirk going on IR would deal a blow to the Jags’ chances of repeating as division champions for the first time since the late 1990s, the team has Ridley and Zay Jones in place. Jones, who missed extensive time this season, has returned to a regular role. Rookie Parker Washington also scored a touchdown and caught six passes for 61 yards — his first receptions as a pro — against the Bengals. Washington is expected to take over as Jacksonville’s primary slot receiver, ESPN.com’s Michael DiRocco notes. While the sixth-round pick showed promise Monday, DiRocco adds he ran an incorrect route on the play Lawrence suffered the ankle injury.

Kirk, 27, has not missed a game since the 2020 season. He resides as a key long-term piece for the Jags, who have Ridley in a contract year. The dependable target missing an extended stretch could certainly threaten the Jags’ hopes of winning the division, with a potential Lawrence absence compounding the issue. Lawrence has never missed an NFL game.

Jaguars Place WR Jamal Agnew On IR, Activate WR Parker Washington

The Jaguars will be without their return man for an extended stretch. A returner and backup wide receiver, Jamal Agnew is moving to IR. This will sideline the veteran weapon for at least four games.

To replace Agnew on their active roster, the Jaguars activated wide receiver Parker Washington on Saturday. A sixth-round rookie out of Penn State, the 21-year-old backup has played in one game this season. Washington worked as a punt returner in that lone outing; the Jags drafted the 5-foot-10 wideout 185th overall this year.

Rib and shoulder injuries will send Agnew to IR; he will not be eligible to return until Week 15. Having made the rare conversion from defensive back to wide receiver after entering the NFL, Agnew has been with the Jaguars since 2021. The former Lions cornerback has operated as the Jags’ return man since signing with the team in 2021. While Agnew landed on IR to cut short his 2021 season, he has been a key part of Jacksonville’s special teams since arriving. An All-Pro in Detroit back in his 2017 rookie year, the former fifth-round pick earned a Pro Bowl nod last season.

Agnew, 28, has worked as both the Jags’ kick returner and their punt-return specialist. While all four of Agnew’s punt-return scores came during his four-year run in Detroit, he added a kick-return TD with Jacksonville in 2021. After scoring three receiving TDs last year, Agnew has nine receptions for 90 yards this year. Although an Agnew fumble wounded the Jaguars’ comeback effort in last year’s divisional round, he has been a key performer for the AFC South team.

This is the final season of Agnew’s three-year, $14.25MM deal. Barring this being a season-ending injury, the seventh-year veteran should be expected to re-emerge as a factor for the division-leading team down the stretch. Washington’s activation leaves the Jags with five such transactions remaining.

So far this year, Zakelj, the second-year interior offensive lineman, has only appeared in four games on special teams, but the team intended for him to compete with free agent signing Jon Feliciano for the backup center job behind starter Jake Brendel. With Aaron Banks out last week, and with the coaches wanting to get Feliciano more involved at right guard anyway, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, Zakelj became a key backup at center. Unfortunately for Zakelj and the 49ers, a torn bicep will require surgery, taking Zakelj out for the remainder of the season.
