Titans Place Ryan Succop On IR

The Titans are placing kicker Ryan Succop on injured reserve, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Succop will be replaced by Greg Joseph, who agreed to a three-year deal with the club earlier this week.

A knee injury sidelined Succop just before the season and kept him on IR until early November. In his sixth year with the Titans, Succop went just 1-6 on field goal tries in six games – clearly, he’s been far below 100% health.

The Titans have cycled through kickers this year – Cairo Santos and Cody Parkey struggled mightily as Succop’s early fill-ins, so they’re hoping to get much better results out of Joseph.

Before all of this, Succop played in every Titans game from 2014-18. In 2018, he went 26-for-30 on field goals and 28-for-31 on PATs. He’ll turn 34 just prior to the 2020 season, when he’s slated to count for $4.1MM against the cap.

Titans Activate Succop, Waive Parkey

The Titans will have their kicker back when they take the field in Week 9. Barely a week after designating Ryan Succop as one of their IR-return players, the Titans activated him.

Succop will reclaim his job, one Cairo Santos and Cody Parkey filled in his absence. The Titans waived Parkey in a corresponding move Saturday.

A knee injury sidelined Succop just before the season. This will be the veteran’s sixth year with Tennessee, which initially acquired him after the 2014 Chiefs opted for Santos over him out of training camp. Santos made just 4 of 9 field goal tries this season, with the Titans cutting him after a four-miss showing against the Bills in Week 5. Parkey made all three of his Titans field goal tries, bouncing back after his infamous playoff miss led to his Bears exit, but will head to the waiver wire.

Succop, 33, played in every Titans game from 2014-18. Last season, he went 26-for-30 on field goals and 28-for-31 on PATs. He will rejoin a Titans team that has won its past two games to enter Week 9 at 4-4.

The Titans also activated defensive back Joshua Kalu from their IR list, meaning the team has used both of its 2019 IR-return designations. Tennessee waived defensive back Tye Smith to make room for Kalu’s return.

Titans Designate K Ryan Succop For Return

The Titans have designated kicker Ryan Succop to return from injured reserve, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio (Twitter link).

Tennessee placed Succop on IR with a knee injury just after initial 53-man rosters were set, meaning he’s eligible to return to game action in Week 9. With Succop sidelined, the Titans first turned to Cairo Santos at kicker, but he was cut after posting a dismal 44.4% field goal conversion rate through five games. Former Bears kicker Cody Parkey has taken over for Tennessee’s past two contests, hitting one field goal and going two-for-three in extra points.

Succop, 33, has made 83.6% of his career field goal attempts. Last season, he converted 26-of-30 tries, including three-of-four from 50+ yards, but missed three extra points. The ex-South Carolina Gamecock last year linked a $20MM extension that will keep with the Titans through the 2022 campaign.

Titans Sign Cairo Santos

At the last minute, the Titans have made a kicking change. The Titans will place Ryan Succop on IR and sign Cairo Santos to take his place, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

Schefter hears that both Santos and former Bears kicker Cody Parkey auditioned for Tennessee this week and Santos, apparently, turned in the better performance.

Santos spent the offseason with the Bucs before losing the job to rookie Matt Gay. In seven games for the Bucs in 2018, Santos made 9-of-12 field goals and nailed all 17 of his extra points. Santos also saw time in a pair of games for the Rams.

AFC Notes: Gordon, Daniels, Pats, Succop

After rounding up some news from the NFC earlier tonight, let’s check out the AFC:

Chargers GM Tom Telesco says he did offer an extension to RB Melvin Gordon, as Eric Williams of ESPN.com tweets, but there are no reports on how much the offer was worth. Gordon is holding out from camp and was put on the reserve/did not report list.
Before the Packers cut Mike Daniels earlier today, they discussed potential trades with the Browns, Patriots, and Chiefs, per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network (video link). Garafolo suggests those teams will continue to pursue Daniels, but at least seven clubs have already been in contact with him.
Browns GM John Dorsey confirmed that he met with Duke Johnson‘s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, on Tuesday, but Dorsey declined to say whether Johnson is still demanding a trade (via Josina Anderson of ESPN.com on Twitter). In related news, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports RB Kareem Hunt will miss the start of training camp with a groin injury, though the injury is not believed to be serious.
The Patriots have placed veteran O-lineman Brian Schwenke on the reserve/retired list, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Schwenke was taking first-team reps at left guard in the spring, but it sounds as if his career could be over.
Jets safety Marcus Maye is on the PUP list after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, and Rich Cimini of ESPN.com says it’s not a sure thing that Maye will be ready to go by Week 1 (Twitter link). Head coach Adam Gase was non-committal when asked if Maye would miss any regular season action.
Titans K Ryan Succop had offseason knee surgery that did not go as well as planned, according to Paul Kuharsky of PaulKuharsky.com. The team has placed Succop on the PUP list, but he is expected to be ready for Week 1 at the latest.
Ravens first-round WR Marquise Brown could be getting closer to completing his comeback from a Lisfranc injury. Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports that Brown has passed his conditioning test and now needs to pass his physical (Twitter link). Hensley says it would not be surprising to see “Hollywood” on the field next week.

Titans, Ryan Succop Agree To Extension

The Titans have signed Ryan Succop to an extension. Succop was scheduled to reach unrestricted free agency in March. Instead, he’s now under contract with the team for the next five years, a source tells ESPN.com’s Cameron Wolfe (on Twitter). The deal is worth $20MM in total with $7.25MM guaranteed at signing. He’s slated to earn $8.25MM over the first two years, which signifies a healthy cash flow.

According to Over The Cap, Stephen Gostkowski of the Patriots has the league’s most lucrative contract in terms of average annual value at $4.3MM. With an AAV of $4MM, Succop slots in as the fourth-highest paid kicker in the league, behind only Gostkowski, Justin Tucker of the Ravens ($4.2MM/year), and Mason Crosby of the Packers ($4.025MM). Succop’s total guarantee of $7.25MM trails Gostkowski ($10.1MM) and Tucker ($10.8MM), but puts him ahead of all other NFL kickers.

Succop, 32 in September, connection on 83.3% of his field goal tries in 2017. He also set an NFL record with 56 consecutive made field goals from inside the 50-yard line and edged out Al Del Greco for the team’s single-season scoring record (136 points).

Although Succop hit those milestones, it wasn’t a perfect year for him from start to finish. His field goal percentage was his lowest since 2013 and he missed two extra points. Succop will work to get back to his usual self this year – he made 88.7% of his FG tries from 2014-2016 in Tennnessee and 96% of his extra point attempts.

In other Titans news, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com recently speculated that the team could part ways with DeMarco Murray this offseason. Murray is a potential cap casualty thanks to his $6.75MM charge and the presence of Derrick Henry.

AFC Notes: Broncos, Colts, Titans, Brady

Following news of Von Miller‘s record-breaking extension with the Broncos, we’ve started hearing reactions from several of the player’s teammates.

Cornerback Chris Harris appeared on NFL Network earlier this week, and the veteran said he believed Miller’s threats of holding out.

“I believe him,” he said (via Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post). “You’ve got to take his word for it. It would be hard for me to sit out, missing out on $14 million, but I think Von is serious in what he’s saying. I think he truly, this whole time just talking to him, he hates the franchise tag. I definitely think he won’t sign it.”

Meanwhile, offseason addition Mark Sanchez stated his excitement for Miller’s return

“Happy the deal was done in time for camp,” the quarterback said. “I knew both sides had the same goal and now we can start camp with the whole squad.”

Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com says safety Mike Adams‘ two-year, $4.3MM contract (with $1.2MM guaranteed) is the best on the Colts. Meanwhile, tight end Dwayne Allen was said to have the team’s worst contract at four years and $29.4MM (with $11.5MM guaranteed).
After Delanie Walker, Craig Stevens, and Anthony Fasano, the Titans could keep up to two additional tight ends, writes Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com. Phillip Supernaw is currently slotted as the team’s fourth tight end, but Wyatt notes that the team will be eyeing the waiver wire for reinforcement.
Meanwhile, Wyatt doesn’t envision undrafted kicker Aldrick Rosas unseating starter Ryan Succop.
When it comes to the ‘Deflategate’ fiasco, Dan Shaughnessy of The Boston Globe writes that “the Patriots dug their own grave by behaving like a guilty party from the jump.” The writer notes the hypocrisy of owner Robert Kraft, who initially touted Roger Goodell as commissioner. Quarterback Tom Brady announced yesterday that he wouldn’t be appealing his four-game suspension.

Ryan Succop, Titans Reach Three-Year Deal

9:51am: Succop will average $2.4MM per season on his three-year deal, tweets Wyatt.

9:05am: The Titans are bringing back their placekicker, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, who reports (via Twitter) that the team has reached an agreement on a three-year contract with veteran free agent Ryan Succop.

After spending five years in Kansas City with the Chiefs, Succop joined the Titans last season, replacing the late Rob Bironas. The 28-year-old converted 19 of his 22 field goal attempts, including both of his tries from 50+ yards. Succop also made all 27 of his extra-point attempts.

It’s been a busy Friday so far for the Titans, who agreed to terms with pass rushers Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan earlier today. For the team, it’s the third notable special teams signing of the month — Tennessee also locked up punter Brett Kern and long snapper Beau Brinkley to new deals within the last week.

Free Agent Rumors: Gilchrist, Morgan, Robinson

The Jets are in contract talks with free agent safety Marcus Gilchrist, a source tells Darryl Slater of the Star-Ledger. Gilchrist arrived Tuesday for a free agency visit with the Jets that has continued into Wednesday, as scheduled. Gilchrist, 26, has spent his entire career with the Chargers, who drafted him in the second round in 2011.
The Titans remain in the mix to sign Derrick Morgan despite his free agent visits and apparent interest from the Cowboys, Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com tweets. They’re also still working to re-sign kicker Ryan Succop.
Free agent cornerback Patrick Robinson has received some interest from the Vikings, Dolphins, Saints, Steelers, and Panthers, Josina Anderson of ESPN.com tweets.
The Vikings have touched base with free agent cornerback Tramon Williams, a source tells Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities (Twitter link). Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (Twitter link) hears the same thing, but his source says it doesn’t sound “very serious.”
Linebacker Andrew Gachkar‘s anticipated visit to the Vikings is on hold as of right now due to what a source only will say is related to “some issues right now,” Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press tweets.
New Jaguars defensive lineman Jared Odrick told reporters, including Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union (Twitter links), that “tons of teams” went after him. The Colts and Chiefs, he said, were among the teams chasing him.

AFC FA Rumors: Harvin, Raiders, Adams

The Raiders‘ interest in wide receiver Percy Harvin will be contingent on meeting him and also finding out his price tag, Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. Even with Harvin’s connection to Bill Musgrave, the Raiders have to inspect the baggage before going any further with him. The latest free agent rumors..

Stephen Holder of the Indy Star (on Twitter) still anticipates the Colts re-signing safety Mike Adams, but no deal is done just yet. Adams, who turns 34 later this month, has said that he wants to retire with the Colts.
Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com (on Twitter) suggested that the Raiders are pursuing Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith. Bill Williamson of ESPN.com (via Twitter) believes that the Raiders are the favorites when it comes to him.
Linebacker Arthur Moats spoke with the Bengals and Cardinals and seemed set to go to the Falcons before deciding to re-sign with the Steelers, Ross Tucker of NBCSN tweets.
The Titans are still working to retain both defensive end Derrick Morgan and kicker Ryan Succop as the clock ticks towards the opening of free agency, Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com tweets.
McCormick (on Twitter) isn’t sure that the Titans will land him, but he expects them to seriously pursue Jason Worilds.
Linebacker Andrew Gachkar has received interest from the Vikings, Panthers, and Raiders, and may end up visiting all three teams later this week, tweets Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.
